Dungey has spent his whole career being Mr. Consistent. However, before last weeks turn of events it seemed Tomac was clearly in his head. Will this be the time we see Dungey choke under pressure? Will he be Mr. consistent and cruise to another championship?

This might be Tomac's last chance to beat Dungey if he retires after this season. It reminds me of JS7 trying to get a straight up championship with over RC4 before he retired and walked away. This could be the season everyone looks back on bench racing for years if Tomac turns out to be the next heir to the throne in coming years. What other unexpected things might we expect? Marvin gets loose and takes out Dungey in the main losing the championship? Tomac rides dirty? Friese or Alessi T-bone Dungey in he first turn and pick-up a Monster Kawi support contract for the next year? ...

Tomac wants to bait him into a race, Dungey is smart enough to know his best bet is to cruise to the finish line, take the title, the girl, bonus cheque and disappear off into the sunset.
I wouldn't hold out hope for a race or any points to be proven, there is nothing to prove.

Why would he suddenly change when his normal strategy is likely to win him a 4th 450sx title?

Because...years from now people will still be talking about who the faster rider was. A boring championship will be easily forgotten if it's shadowed by tomac speed dominance.

Prove that he is among the greatest to throw a leg over a bike by winning his 4th premier title?

I think the chance is quite high.

I'm sure JM is rolling his eyes at your comment with his 7 dominating titles.

I believe the point Dungey will be most concerned with tonight is the decimal point in his bank balance.

Wrong. 20 years from now the record book will show Dungey won 4 sx championships (if he takes care of business tonight). Not who was the more flashy. I bet if you asked the guy in my avatar, he'd tell you that he'd rather have had that SX title rather than most wins that year (92'). Even though Brashaw was my favorite rider of all time, I remember full-well that the true champion that year was (the bland, boring) Jeff Stanton.

Big difference in being the best and being the smartest. Dungey races smart. Is he the best? No. Is he the smartest? Yes, far and above the field. He has a formula and he sticks to and it has worked for him. If he wins the title tonight, the only thing it will prove is you dont have to be the best to win championships. You have to be the smartest. You have to be disciplined in your strategy. He is the best at that. He has the titles to prove it.

if we don't count the first 3 rounds where Tomac was just awful and Tomacs bad starts + crashes I don't think Dungey has beaten Tomac yet. Everytime they start together Tomac runs away with it. Even when Tomacs started 10th or worse he's caught Dungey to win. So no Dungey will not prove a point he will do what he always does and get 2nd or 3rd.

He was the smartest when not racing against RV. He couldn't do anything to stop that red headed freak

It will be an interesting race for sure. Hopefully a Tomac blowout. And dung riding into retirement.

If Dungey wins the title he has proved he is the best over the course of the season, that's how it works. Ask Dungey and Tomac what they think of the old saying "Championships are won on your bad days"....

Years from now...people will be looking at the record books to see who won the 2017 SX championship. 2nd place in championship or who had a good run of wins...not so much.

Years from now the ROI of his bonus check will still be paying off. A bunch of boring keyboard wankers will be easily forgotten.

I have more memories of the beast racing than the champ. Not to take take anything away from Stanton but people do remember those epic race performances like SLC. Probably also good for the bank account in endorsements?

James Stewart only has 3 big bike titles and some people still think he could win. Blistering speed will always be remembered.

The point is.....

Whoever wins the championship tonight was the best rider this year (as proven by the most points at the end of the championship). That's it, and that's all. All other arguments are just done for the sake of arguing.

Carry on.....

This guy gets it... Dungey will be forgotten even with 4 titles. JS7 will always be the fastest man to ever ride a bike even if he has less titles, it's clear who had a bigger impact on the sport.

What has Dungey done to make an impact? Plenty of people have more titles and his boring approach to championships is easy to fade away. It's not saying his career isn't successful, but he won't be a legend like some that have been mentioned. 10 years from now people will still be talking about JS7 and no one will be talking about Dungey. You are free to your own opinion, but to be a legend you have to have flash and super human speed, not just championships. Especially when many were gifted to him in one way or another.

You're probably new to this sport. History does not now nor has it in the past, played out that way.

It just goes to show you how badass RV was. He had the speed and consistency, that's truly rare.
