Looked pretty basic too me, I'm sure they'll add more to it. I do think it kinda sucks they took out some of the history sections from that place. Bradshaw blvd and that drop down to the uphill triple behind the start was really fun.

Disappointed with the layout they chose for this race but hopefully they have it a little better dialed in with alot more length added come national time. Fingers crossed..

The track was abbreviated this weekend, there is another pro section they have. A few my buddies rode it this weekend and all had good things to say about it.

Change is good, but. No mini rider A class or any fast B rider big bike should be jumping any thing the pro riders will do.

How so? I know a few guys who have jumped Laroccos Leap, I've never been there but they say when the corner is in good shape it is really not that bad. I have done the skyshot a Unadilla, also very easy. Think back to Broome-Tioga to the big downhill triple. When the track was freshly groomed it wasn't too bad to get over. As they say jumps for dough...corners for you know. The pros shine when the track is beat to shit and 25 minutes into the moto...

My bad ,guess I should have worded it different. Guess I like stuff on tracks that separate the good guys from the great ones.

I admit that track looked very easy but if you look close, there are landing 60ft past most of the places that 85 was landing, I'm sure by the time the National is ran the track will have it's challenges.

I don't think you need 130ft plus jumps to have great racing.

I agree.... I was very sad to see all the changes. Why fix what definitely isn't broken?

Other than the track being pretty rough, I thought that looked great. Plus I'm sure it will be a bit different than the pro setup for the national.

I rode Budds Creek last Monday, and it was built up more than usual, but still not as technical and big as it will be for the pro race. I've ridden that track the day after, and holy shit it's like a totally different facility for those week or two around the race. After that it goes back to a more friendly layout for us regular folk.

Since when did a track laid out for an amateur qualifier mean that the national track is ruined? SMH

I had a friend that raced there this weekend in the pro class and he said the changes were terrible and he doesn't know how it's gonna be for the national.

Agreed on the old start not being fair. In the past, maybe a couple handfuls of riders had a chance at a holeshot.

Maybe I can offer some input here...

The original High Point design was from September 1976, when Maico factory riders Sylvain Geboers, Hans Maisch and maybe Adolf Weil were there to practice in between Trans-AMA races in the Bel-Ray Maico van. It was too wet to ride the grass track that my dad had laid out for the one and only race there before that visit, but they decided to walk around on their own and laid out a new track with rocks and tree branches to mark where they would put the corners. They designed an almost entirely new track and my dad went with it....

A lot has changed over the years. Maico is gone, the Trans-AMAs are gone, Adolf Weil passed. My dad is gone. Motorcycles have evolved to an incredible level. High Point has undergone many, many changes. This is just the latest. Bradshaw Boulevard changed because guys like Chad Reed were literally pre-jumping the tunnel jumps. The triples behind the starting gate were so easy that Jeremy McGrath jumped them on the first lap of a Kawasaki intro two years ago -- and he had not been on the track since 1998! And Guy B is right, the start was terribly unfair to anyone on the right of the doghouse..

So we gave the old girl a makeover, The jumps were tame this weekend, and we didn't run the whole track. But the feedback we got was almost universally positive, with some really good suggestions to make it even better moving forward,

We're lucky this motocross track is still there after more than 40 years. But if you don't think LaRocco's Leap hasn't changed over the years, I suggest you get measure how much closer they've had to move the fence to the takeoff...
And like SX track architect Rich Winkler once said to us (and I am paraphrasing), People always want us to build Anaheim '86, but if we did, guys would be jump entire LANES of the track -- the bikes are so much better it's ridiculous. That's the challenge.

Please come to the national and see how you like it in person. It might be more exciting that an 85cc rider's GoPro footage.

Well said. Change isn't always bad, so long as it isn't rushed. In fact it's almost inevitable if you want longevity. As riders and machines progress, so do the obstacles that they ride on.

Can't wait to see the national track this year!

Oh, and I could still do the triple behind the starting gate at High Point... Think about that!

I'm having a really hard time dealing with the fact that EVERY LEGENDARY obstacle at High Point is gone! I have memories of Bradshaw Blvd GONE. That one hit me hard a few years ago, when they wiped that out, I have memories of Jeff Stanton hitting the uphill triple next to the start, NOW GONE! Brock Sellards and Ricky Carmichael being the first riders on 80's to hit that uphill triple. The long sweeping start I watched Kevin Windham pull his holeshot in 1994 on a Team Green kx 125 GONE!!! Why they chose to take these iconic sections away is hard to understand. I don't get it.
I think DC needs to address the fact that by changing the track, he literally erased many memories from this guy's brain.

So you're ok with every major part of high point MX history being GONE now? You guys get side tracked so easily, this post isn't about an 85 rider. He just happened to be the helmet cam vid.... You've probably never been to high point, and wouldn't understand the history and how it's all wiped away now.
I dont really agree with the changes. I loved High point because it carried a distinct Euro feel to it. and the changes they had been making in the last ten years; taking out the wall turn, flattening bradshaw blvd, moving away from cambered turns to big jumps.....sigh.

Liked it, raced on it Sunday. Bout time for a makeover, as DC stated it's been the same or similar for a very long time. I've raced HP probably two dozen times over the years and this makeover motivated me to come back and get excited to see how it was.

To me it seems like it's now better use of the terrain and more natural terrain than in the past. The downhills and uphills were cool and super gnarly and rough. The start was better for sure.

Not only that, but they also ran a good program, kept flowing, and well organized. Nice job!

For me as a fat vet racer it was nice to not be worrying about trying to clear certain jumps and more about picking lines on the natural terrain.

I find it funny, as always, how so many of the comments on this thread are from people that were not there and probably live 2000 miles away.

The one truly sucky part of the weekend was riding and/or trying to walk down the road to the staging area and gate. It was terrible with the giant rock road! However, that was just put in as the road base and more layers will go on top soon I was told by the staff. Totally understandable.

Planning on coming back for the Vet National! Maybe all the experts from thousands of miles away can watch the videos from that and tell us all how crappy it was.

Damon Bradshaw and Steve Childress were the first 2 80 riders to hit the triple beside the start.

OMG So I post this:

I find it funny, as always, how so many of the comments on this thread are from people that were not there and probably live 2000 miles away.

And then someone tops it by posting from 9500+ miles away telling us there were no off cambers! BTW there were several off-cambers, I know because I was actually there racing it on my bike!

Anyone from the Moon or Mars want to chime in next? hahaha

No off-cambers? Maybe it's just the overhead that makes it look like that?
