In the market for a new helmet. I know that a helmet is the absolute most important part of riding gear and you should not skimp out on a helmet. I am just an average weekend rider looking for some advice on what helmet to buy. I would like to stay $150 or under. Any input would be appreciated.

I think in that range the best you can do is ensure it has dual eps. My understanding is that means there's two diff layers of foam designed for different impact types (low and high speed?).
There are some low price point helmets now with mips as well but not sure as low as 150.
The Scorpion helmets I think are dual eps, and apparently pretty light. May be good bang for the buck?

I searched high and low and came out with a 2015 Shoei VFX-W for $180 shipped. Yeah its 2 years old but its 30% of the price of new, even if I get 2 less years from it.

Look on websites clearance and bargain areas. This helmet was on BTO sports website in a "closeout bin".

Thank you guys for all of the replys. I have yet to check around on motosport or bto or any of those places. I have been searching ebay a little bit. The 3 that have caught my eye so far are
1. Bell mx9 or sx1
2. HJC clx7
3. EVS T5

I had a moto 8 I bought on closeout and as it was wearing out, came across the sx1 on closeout and bought that. I have a big noggin and the excess weight of the sx1 at my size is really noticeable. Took my neck a month to get used to it and my neck still get tired on long downhill sections when standing. I'd happily sacrifice anything cosmetic to go back to the lighter weight of the moto 8/9. The sx1 fits well, but I'll try a lot harder to find a good deal on a moto-whatever next time.

I would like to be able to buy a top of the line helmet. I just cant afford to. This is why i am asking for opinions on a good budget helmet. I would love to be able to afford a 6D ATR or a TLD SE4 or something along those lines.

X2,. Save the $$ to buy a good helmet,. If $$ is a issue, can you afford the medical bills that might happen with a low end helmet? Leftover shoeis are $400. Well worth it.

Listen, we arent stupid here...you can afford a bike, and you can afford a truck to get to the track.Dont try to tell us you cant afford a helmet. Like I said, buy your helmet first...then buy your bike.

Try affording anything without your brain intact.

Dont ride for a month, BOOM you have the extra $100 to buy a proper helmet.

Get a Fly F2 or a FOX v3 or even a v4 on closeout. I see them all the time for under $200. Get a plain black or plain white.

I've seen closeout Fly F2 Carbon with MIPS for $185 on eBay. I have 2 of them without MIPS and might jump on that deal.

The F2 carbon is a really good helmet for the money. Lightweight and good ventilation.

The point of the message was that the sx1 is heavy. Smile

You will be able to get a previous year Fox V3 or Fly F2 for 150-200 bucks. Just don't pay full retail for a entry level helmet, that is a really bad decision.

Only helmets I've ever owned are Fly Kinetic, they are the best helmets for the price IMO and I trust them heavily. 9 years of riding and still no concussions(knock on wood) so I don't feel less protected just because the helmet is cheaper because I truly believe this is just as good as MOST helmets on the market, sure 6D and TLD make helmets that are slightly better but at ALOT heavier price so if you can afford it, go for the higher end 6D but if not, don't refuse to ride until you can, as long as you aren't going Mach 1 you will be fine IMO but guess it's better safe than sorry.

Keep looking man there are some nicer deals out there. Go to btosports.com and look at their close out helmets. They even have their high end AGV helmet for dirt cheap on some sizes. The Thor Verge helmet is a good helmet for the money, that's what the PC guy used to wear as well. The deals are out there.

I just purchased a helmet, it actually came in today so I've been researching motosport.com, bto, rocky Mountain etc. I will say this, I think rocky Mountain had the best deals and selection on their close outs. Listen to what everyone is telling you and buy a close out helmet. You can get a really nice helmet at a really good price, it'll just be a 2015 model (which who cares.) I just picked up the Leatt 6.5 carbon for $300 and it retails for $600.

I saw a guy have a probably life changing crash this past weekend. Along with a couple of broken bones and a gash in his side, he suffered a brutal concussion and had to be air lifted out from the track. His cheapo Fly helmet did not hold up too well (I don't know if it was a Kinetic or another model but it was one of the sub-$140 models). I wish I could have got a picture of the helmet after the crash. F2 Carbon is the bare minimum I'd consider.
