And Sean Collier and his KX 500 make me want to buy a 500...
Maybe some are not influenced by who wins the races but many are. You buy a bike based on reviews, brand loyalty, test ride, dealer location or whatever else but deep down, it means something to most people to see your bike out there leading the pack even if it is the $100k version.
It may also have the opposite effect if a top tier rider can't adapt to new bike for whatever reason. The expensive salary and cost to support a racer who under performs could have a negative effect on bike sales. Take 2016 for example, you are 50/50 on KTM or Kawi, do you buy the bike that's winning or the bike Tomac can't get dialed? Suddenly now, Tomac makes that Kawi look so good, it might really help make up minds and a lot of the time, they might not realise that's why they bought bike a over bike b.

I feel like as a kid, I was far more impressionable, but as an adult, I have never once purchased a single thing because a pro had it.
There must be something to it though, or else these teams are spending a metric ton of cash for nothing.
Also like others have said the Ktm has also sparked interest with the fe edition but again that bit becaus of riders.
The one thing that makes me want a bike more than no other is when I see a brand new two stroke in the pits. I just wish i had one. My side piece.
Steinke makes me want a 125 again too.
