Sx is an exibition of extremely talented riders,
Due to lack of space and passing.

Motocross is actual racing, including skill and endurance.

MX matters more to me just because I think the racing is better. Supercross is fun to watch but it seems like a lot of it is follow the leader till the person ahead makes a mistake, whereas outdoors the track is so much bigger that they can actually race side by side. Supercross can definitely be exciting, don't get me wrong.

I also tend to think guys who can win a 24 race series in almost 100 degree weather is just on a completely different level than winning an 8 race series where the races are half as long. Supercross is gnarly in it's own way in that the riders are at high risk of crashing pretty much the entire time because of rythym sections and whoops.

The fact that you just said SX doesn't require skill or endurance baffles me.

I was taken aback by your statement where you said you'd rather spend an evening at a stadium than "kill" a day at a track until I read the part about the VIP areas. Still though I would take "killing" a day anytime at Washougal or Red Bud vs going to a stadium race. I have gotten to where I hem and haw every year about driving 1 hour to Ford Field and only went last year because I got a free ticket. On the flip side of that I have no issue whatsoever getting out of bed at 4 am to make the three and a half hour trek to Red Bud so I can be there for practice. I guess I am really old school because I absolutely love spending all day at a National. I love walking around the track and watching from every vantage point possible during the day. Conversely at a SX I absolutely hate being stuck in the same d-mn seat all night. I could go on and on but I guess I am just the old school fan that wouldn't miss it much if SX disappeared.

Well, with SX, I can do something during the day, and then go to the event in the evening. In the PNW, dry, summer weekends are a very finite resource. So spending a weekend day mountain biking has more appeal than fighting crowds at Washougal to watch others do something. I'd much rather spend the day at Washougal riding myself. I might think differently had I not spent plenty of weekends there, and watched quite a few nationals. The last few were definitely less fun with the prime viewing spots blocked off for VIP areas. That stuff blows and seriously takes the fun out. At least for those not in those areas.
I feel ya on the VIP sections. They have a couple at Red Bud now and one is really in a prime spot on the South end of the track. They also erected a grand stand years ago at the top of the monza turn and the only seats worth having for the extra $ are the top row (you can see the north and south side of the track from there) but they completely block what used to be prime viewing. I still love the vibe of the outdoors though and got to experience Washougal for the first time last year. As a long long time Red Bud vet spectator I would be tempted to trade you tracks, I loved Washougal!

If the ruts keep on going like they have been I will switch to watching porn. I watch and go to both supercross and outdoor but if I could only have one it would be outdoors.

I think for the average rider/race its MX all the way, at least thats how it is for me. One of my favorite parts of attending a national is hiking all over the place and viewing the lines and action from different parts of the track. I've been to Unadilla, Broome and Southwick, sit for a while and then march on to a new spot. I could see how this could be tough for some folks, so.

I say it's fair. I'm a "die hard" but SX is more entertainment with typically closer racing and a more comfortable viewing situation for a bigger percentage of fans. To lose Glen Helen or hangtown but gain another one-off stadium race or something different doesn't seem as blasphemous to me as you all will likely make it.
I would have to disagree, I have been to every Glen Helen national in the past 17 years and every Anaheim SX. I much prefer Glen Helen over any SX. MX all the way for me!

I would have to say Outdoor Motocross instead of Supercross. But the promoter needs to make the outdoor races a much better experience for the fans. The promoter is more interested about seeing how much money he can make off of the racers, fans, vendors and the track owners due to his greed. The purse money is a joke for the racers who the fans come to see.
Going to an Outdoor race in 2016 last year was very similar to going to an Outdoor race back in the 70's. The fans still need much better viewing areas and they still need lots of grand stands with covers to provide shade and keep the fans dry if it rains. Plus Port A Potty's have not had any technology gains that I know of since the 70's. Nothing like using one of those high tech shit holes that is almost full on a hot summer day that have shit every where, piss all over the seat, no toilet paper, and you can't even wash your hands. This will not impress your girlfriend or your wife with the kids at all.
The ticket and parking prices are too expensive, and you have to walk a very long way to even get to the track because there are no shuttles, just more greed by the promoter. Food and Drinks are also very high priced and there are not enough vendors for the size of the crowds, so the lines are very long. Vendors have to pay a fortune to set up at these race
Outdoor motocross has not changed much since the 70's except for all the man made Supercross sections with huge jumps. The fans still have the same problems they had back in the 70's, and the fans are still getting screwed by the promoter also. So they stay home, record it on their DVR on 3 or 4 different channels, that is if they have all the channels and watch it in the comfort of their home. Clean bathrooms, free parking, great view on big screen TV with comfortable seating, good cold beer and food without spending a fortune. Also the wife and kids can go do something else instead of watching the race.
Also the truth is most young people and kids could care less about riding motorcycles or watching a Supercross or Motocross race at the track or on TV at home. They would much rather get a new phone or they would just be texting during the race and not paying attention at all. Times are changing and that is why the motorcycle industry and motorcycle racing are in a decline just like the NFL, Nascar, NBA, MLB, and other sports. Technology is changing our way of life and that is our biggest problem of all.

MX of course. If you notice that since SX has grown the sport of MX has struggled? You could say the combination of SX and Freestyle really. The core sport is what brings in kids to ride. Without kids coming into the sport it is only a matter of time until the sport is gone. It could happen very fast also. Tracks would close very fast at a certain point.

I would also ask anyone what has Feld ever really done for the sport? Not their races........the sport? Do they promote local racing events? Do they promote entry priced bikes or safety?

Used to go to SX all the time. Vancouver twice, Seattle multiple times, even A2 in '11...the infamous RD chain derail. Then the summer of '11 made the trek down to Washougal for the Nationals weekend.. Haven't been to a SX again. Been to the 'shoug every year except '16 and only because my son crashed hard in June and was in a coma for 5 days. No comparison, way more bang for your buck at a National then SX...and the fans are less douchey as well.

My first race was a SX but it's not what I fell in love with. It was just a way for a little kid to see the guys he idolized up close because Dallas didn't have a national within 10 hours.

Would you feel the same way about watching MXGP races if the GP guys disguised themselves with AMA numbers and bike graphics on US tracks?

Outdoors. I don't care what side of the world it's on either, if it's playing on TV, I'm watching it. I'd love to watch the shit live but Millville is the closest national to me and its 7hrs away.

Last Supercross I went to was Atlanta in 2002. I like drinking beer at the races, partying and having a good time. But I saw so many drunken idiots that night. Saw some passed out in their seats, others getting sick in the walkways, some cussing and dropping f bombs with family's with their young kids near by, and the worst part was how much beer I had on me from drunks spilling their beer while raising hell and cheering. I know family's should sit in the family section. But I was drinking beers, feeling good with a nice buzz but being covered in beer at the end of the night was not cool. I had a 4 hour drive home and was worried if I got pulled over it would not be good because I smelled like a brewery. I decided I would just stay home and watch Supercross on TV after that. I realized I like having some friends over and just have a Supercross party at the house more than going to the race 4 hours away.

SX is for the few.

I'll be a motocross guy forever. If SX went away, I could live with it. Not MX though.
I like this guy right here.

I like both and would honestly get tired of either one if thats all we had to watch, but i just feel that you get more bang for your buck with MX and theres nothing like sitting outside im the sun with a cooler watching scantily clad moto hoes walking around.Smile

I would 100% disagree. I'd rather walk around at Glen Helen all day on the edge of heat exhaustion watching the best sport in the world on one of the best tracks in the world than sit in a plastic seat surrounded by idiots at a Supercross (which I'll be doing next weekend).

Now as a spectator, I'd rather spend an evening in a stadium then kill an entire day at a track, where VIP sections have blocked off all the prime viewing spots. One SX a year is about all the flat bills I can stand anyway, plus its so much easier to tivo it and watch it on my schedule.

Last year my buddy and I drove from Green Bay, WI to PA for the High Point National. We were up by 6:00 and at the track before the crew even showed up. We literally walked right in because nobody was at the gate. Don't worry, we had our tickets already! There is nothing better than getting to the track in the morning and seeing everything look absolutely perfect with a layer of fog hovering over the track. That 5 minutes alone when you get to the track is better than any supercross race in it's entirety. Screw Supercross.

Well said. This talk about more supercross and less outdoors lately absolutely infuriates me. I don't know what I'll do. Can't say I'd turn my back on the sport, because it's all I've known, but that would be a very sad day and the resentment I would have toward Feld and SX may just be the end of me really giving a shit about pro racing.

Edit: Meant to quote TBteam.
