I am thinking about getting one for my first truck. How long does a transmission usually last on one of those? Are they any good in terms of reliability?

Is it risky to buy one with more than 50k miles?

Hell no.. It's a ford truck... Take care of it and it will take care of you. Bought mine with 83k and it now has 214k on the original transmission, rear end and motor.

I concur. Have a 2000 3.0 V6 standard with 148k and she burns a bit, but solid daily driver otherwise.

Buy a manual, check oil level, and the radiator. Plastic endcaps on my radiator cracked a while back, cheap easy fix luckily.

I have a 01 4 cylinder ranger and it has been good to me. It burns a little oil, but it has 185k miles on it. It has a manual transmission and has had no major issues besides just regular maintenance.

Several threads on here about them, I've posted in more than one.
Long story short, they're good trucks. It's advisable to avoid the auto transmission (al4d, 5r55e, 5r44e, ect) however the manual isn't perfect.
If it helps, my 97 explorer (basically a ranger with a camper shell) has over 200K. Orignial transmission died at 180K because I was jumping it at the mud bog. Otherwise been solid in the 100K miles I've put on it.
My brothers ranger is at 175K or so, still has the orginial transmission.
Both trucks are autos

Have an 03 B2300, so basically a ranger. Bitchin' little truck for sure. 2.3 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual. Like others have said, keep an eye on the oil level as they burn a bit when mileage is up there. Bought mine with 150k, currently has just under 160k and I'm fixing to do a clutch job due to a bad slave cylinder. Damn thing is inside the bell housing.
I've taken mine back and forth to central California to visit my Mom a few times, and it's made it over the passes pretty well for the most part. Outside of replacing the coolant tank and radiator due to some cracks, its been a good truck.

Loved my 93' 4.0L 5-speed manual Ford Ranger. Should have never sold it. Bought with 80k mi, sold with 240k. Rebuilt the the transmission around 190k mi.

It had it's quirks, but I beat the shit out of that thing and it still ran like a champ the day I sold it for $1,200. Go for it!!

I had two of them. An 89 and a 99. Both had electrical problems from hell.

The 2000 up 3.0l have early 2000s spec Honda valve seats( they su k) the older ones had harder seats..... Seen several with a sunk valve at 100000. The 4.0 and the 2.3 are good though.

I've got a 98 3.0 manual with 200k. Pretty solid truck. No frills. Gets my bike to the track and that's about all I use it for.

Had a 1994 B2300 as my truck for 20 years. Never let me down. It had 240k mikes when sold. The 5 speed tranny can lose oil. It has factory rubber plugs on top that rot out and oil slowly sloshes out. I replaced my clutch and put freeze plugs in those holes. Never had a problem with it.

Rangers are the biggest pos. Only Ford would design a clutch system that requires you to pull the tranny just to replace a the slave cylinder. Watch this video from the 1 minute marker to the 3 minute mark for one example why Ford Rangers are junk yo

I just bought a new GMC but I still have my 97 Ranger with 212k miles on it and even though its a piece of shit it's still kicking and can still get me from point A to point B. My grandpa bought it new in 1997 and abused the shit out of it all the way until 2014 when he gave it to me and it's still holding up even though it needs some major TLC at this point, the drivetrain is still strong.

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 V6 and 5 speed transmission that I bought new. It has 150,000 miles on it, I have put 2 clutches in it, other than that routine maintenance. I do use it sometimes to haul heavy loads of firewood and I live in the mountains in NC, this did not help my clutch life. It has been a good truck.

I had a 99 4x4 with a 4 liter 6 that I bought new . I put 130k on it before selling it and it was still running strong. Kind of wish I still had it. I think I heard Rangers will be available here in the states again.

Keep in mind you will not be setting any land speed records...They are absolute pigs and pretty pathetic on fuel
