What's crazy is that everyone talks about how much wider the Yamaha is, especially in the shroud area, But I have measured my 14 yz against my dads 13, 15 and 17 rmz and the width is no different. I get that it looks wider due to the intake, but after measuring, it isn't.

ML I dig the variety of riders you guys use! You get all kinds of different opinions. I just wish more novices knew how to tell the difference between bikes, suspension etc. so we could have some opinions from an average Joe. Keep up the good work guys!

I can see being the case, but it can't more than an inch or two at most(i'll measure it when I get home from work to get the exact difference). Being a taller guy though, I prefer that. Easier to grip with my legs vs a kawi or ktm.

Nice write up! Results were totally inconsistent, which I am pleased to see because vital used a wide array of riders. I am coming off a YZ450 and am looking to pick up a new bike this year. I find it funny that some of the test riders commented on the wideness and weight of the Yamaha. I put the Cycra shrouds on mine and it made it significantly narrower! Also the Yamaha is only 3-4 pounds heavier than the Honda (Claimed wet weights). Would have been nice to see actual wet weights of the bikes!

For 2017, it comes down to the Honda or Yamaha for me. I checked out the Honda at the dealership last night and it feels like a 125 just sitting on it. (mind you I'm 6'1"). I dunno if that's for me or not.

My mistake, I forgot to hit save on my last update before publishing. Wet weights are in there.

KTM 350 SX-F: 232 lbs.
KTM 450 SX-F: 233 lbs.
Husqvarna FC 450: 235 lbs.
Kawasaki KX450F: 240 lbs.
Honda CRF450R: 244 lbs.
Suzuki RM-Z450: 246 lbs.
Yamaha YZ450F: 248 lbs.
is that with a full tank?

Man if the Husky ranked juuuust overall a bit better than the KTM, would it be fair to say the FC350 may trump the KTM350 slightly?

I was kind of curious why the KTM 350 was tested but the Husky wasn't.. Not complaining or nit picking your test, you guys killed it. Just curious why you included one but not the other.

Sounds like it's a great time to be a consumer, all of the bikes sound excellent and some just need a few little refinements.

Can you post lap times of each bike for each rider? Is there video footage showing each rider's skill level on one of the bikes? Thanks!

The Ktm must of not been broken in well or had some other issue. No way the identical motor in the husky but with a more restrictive air box would normally make more power. More torque maybe but it shouldn't have made more power. What maps were the bikes in, both in aggressive settings? Thanks for these shootouts
ML512 wrote:
As it mentions in the article, both are in standard. The aggressive maps are much closer, I'm still trying to get those.
Can you please show sxf450 standard and aggressive map dyno charts?

Something has to be up with those hp numbers, no way the ktm is down almost 3 hp since last year, we will see what the other mags say.

Zach Peddie has tried West Coast SX the past two years and has done a couple Nationals. I don't know if he's regularly lined up at the local level in the last year. Micky Carter just broke his wrist, but did the Vet Nationals a few weekends ago. Shelby lives in Idaho, and I'm not sure when the last time was when Derrick raced.
Awesome. Your whole crew does a great job with their riding and subsequent input! Hopefully I will get to ride near them this next year, TWMX, REM, SCOTMX, OTHG.

Different dyno and likely a different bike. Some of you KTM guys sure get butt hurt when your orange machine doesn't win every category. this isn't the first time that the Husky has put out higher peak numbers than the KTM while having a suffocating airbox and feeling mellower on the track.

I dont mind how low or how high the numbers are, none of us on here can use the 450 to its potential anyways. But i do care about consistency. You cant say a bike has 54hp last year then 49 this year when its the same machine. Or go from 55 to 58. Or from 58-54. You get my point. In the case of the kawi thats almost 10% difference in power from last years shootout. But all other dynos have it at 55 roughly. You use the same calibrated tools to do tests. And that one joker that says ya the bike handled like shit because the rear tire was adjusted all the way forward and different than last years bike Well you have tools, move it back to where you tested the bike last year. All this data should be recorded and you should start from the same point as the previous year, fork height, rear wheel position. Then you get a true feel of change. Obviously its different when the rear wheel is all the way forward. I like all the bikes and would ride any of then. I buy the bike i can get best deal and best support on. I ride suzukis and kawis actually but think the ktm is sweet too just too pricey.

FTR, I was helping a rider for the '12 west coast and he got two new kx 250f's from his local dealer. Broke them in the same day and I built one as a practice bike and one as the race bike. Both went on the dyno with about 1hr each before I started any motor mods and there was a 2.1hp difference between the two

Actually I looked at his history since he only has 11 posts and he has a kx 450. Guess which 450 is the slowest in the Vital shootout?

I think some people may take these bike shootouts a little too seriously.

I love all the data. I find it odd how Yamaha has failed to slim their bike down over the past few years.

I dont have truck Smile
FMF dyno or RaceTech.. it was just about 16/17 numbers for same bike.
This is what was starting point of talking about Husky/KTM/Yamaha when motors didnt change from 2016 to 2017 and we see different results..

As long as they were all on the same dyno on the same day, that's all that matters. Every dyno reads different, some are way more generous than others. Can't compare last years to this years, compare them against each other.

Are dyno numbers that new to you guys?

Different bike, different dyno, different operator, different conditions, and you expect the numbers to mirror last year? Good lord is right, it doesn't work like that and you are way out of line calling out the testers based on that. They did everything right and you have false expectations as to what the results should be.

As for this guy you call a joker, he knows a thing or two and sounds like you have a lot to learn.

i have an RMZ but good argument boys. Because i question a poor dyno test with zero consistency i ride a kawi haha. I had a pet crow with better reasoning than you two plugs. Keep fighting for that minimum wage increase fellas! Your burger skills arent unappreciated!
