Training in the 90s

I know the riders of the 90s era were not known for training very hard but they must have been doing something. It's not like they were riding around with beer guts and they were still putting in good laps at the end of outdoor motos. LaRocco seemed like he trained and MC talked about having Gary Semics as his trainer . I was just wondering if anyone here can give some insight into what they did for training. Someone who actually knows facts. I know Mr. Semics posts here from time to time and hopefully he will chime in.

I think they rode, and rode, and rode, and then on their day off...they rode

The whole gym training part of motocross fitness was not really in play back then i think. Sure guys might have done some stuff to stay fit but i don't think they had full blown trainers and programms to stick with along with diets and whatnot.

More places to ride then. And Jet skis and riding lots of chicks at the lake got your cardio sessions in.
The top guys trained though. Well, not dogger much but some, and he rode skis alot and surfed and stuff. And thats good exercise.

Back then they didnt play Xbox. They bought real toys and played with girls. Some had contests who could bang the most chicks in a weekend.

It was a different time. Todays guys must hate riding the same burned out shit all the time.

This is how Deegan practiced starts and Metzeger practiced his freestyle moves....

It's funny, because the 80s guys like Ward, Bailey, Stanton and Oshow were training animals. It's not like RC and Aldon invented training.

In the 80s i got my bike program together. I did everything myself at times having 6 bikes taking them all to race.

Each day of the week was spent doing something, wash relax monday, teardown Tuesday and so on.

Then i worked on me, one year lifting weights, bulked up and could not get lungs to work that much meat.

The next year just bicycling and the weight on the broom and rope.

Went from 200 to 170ish and had no limit on lungs.

At that time i was growing the best weed ever and would sell it to as many guys in my class as i could.

Never smoked and rode ,but they did, easy fodder. Lol.

Good times

That's what I was thinking. That sure seems to be the perception though.

Not every rider was in a Crusttys video, plenty trained just as hard if not harder than today's riders. Ryan Hughes and Jeff Stanton were animals and I bet today they are in better shape than 90% of the current field.

They trained by the same methods that today's riders train, weight lifting cardio work, the same stuff the difference is today's guys have science behind them.

In '97 I used the same trainer as team Suzuki for a few months. It was a very detailed meal and supplement program and consisted of 20min aerobic cardio warm up, 3 rounds of between 8-10 no rest weight machine circuits with 5 min of anaerobic cardio between rounds finished with another 20min of aerobic cardio for the cool down. Each session was almost an hour and a half of non stop ass kicking and if he thought you were slacking he would speed up the pace.

I guarantee that nobody goes any harder today. The only difference I can see is that there is a bit more emphasis on long, low heart rate base cardio training. He gave me a special price compared to what McGrath, Ramsey and Albertyn were paying, but I still couldn't afford to keep it up, or so I thought. If I had it all to do over, I would have found any way to cover the cost of his services, but you can't fix stupid...

Science?

All that science never did much for some. Maybe even ruined a few..

Extend your arms out in front of you and roll the broom handle, raising the weight and unrolling it back down. Was purported to help with arm pump.

^^ Ah, got it. Thanks, Olds Cool. Familiar with that one and do it as a warm up before racing myself. Just couldn't quite decipher Hillbilly! Smile

Another thing that has changed... Social media. We weren't getting instagram posts, tweets, and pictures everyday of Racers training back in the 90's. Nowadays it's all about exposure, so we just see it more.

But was also later proven to make matters worse. I did a lot of those exercises too.

I read an old article on a 70's mxer in which he described his training program, it was a bit Neanderthal like, but hardcore. Weights and running before work, then ride a full tank till empty and push his bike home about 5klm as fast as he could every day after work. Big effort.

I never got arm pump so dunno.

Something else i did was get against the wall and squat like you're sitting in a chair. Hold it till quivering and keep going to make your mind get thru pain.

Back then my mondays would be so painful from sore and stiff mussels and back that I couldn't wipe my ass. The bikes would beat the shit out of me even though you had 12 inches of travel the handling would fad so much thru the moto that by the end you are slamming everything to metal.

Plus, I could race Friday nite,Saturday nite and Sunday many weekends at 3 different tracks.

Good times right there

When you see what the 98% of the current trainers are doing and if you do know what you looking at, there is NO science in it. They think there is, but there isnt unfortunately. The same goes for analysing data. Most use Polar Flow which is useless when trying to train and track progression, load and adaptation on a athletes, they don't know who to read raw data from a V02, don't know how to prescribe training off that data and periodise a strength program / cardio and riding program together.

Its actually really sad when you have that level of person working with an Athlete of that level.

Flame away but its the truth.

They have to go full tilt for two 30 minute moto's. Always wondered what would happen if they rode full tilt for two 45 minute moto's Monday through Friday. Shouldn't that be enough? Plus they are training directly the exact muscles and cardio needed.

You would be so over reached and so badly fatigued you would more than likely get ill, have genuine epstein barr and more than likely never recover long term if that was done for a number of weeks.
