With good upgraded suspension that bike will be competitive and a hell of a lot of fun at the beginner class level. Put a set of 47mm showas and a works perf. Shock on it and go have fun, but be prepared to be way outgunned on it once you move up to novice and are racing against more experienced riders on much lighter, better handling and more powerful bikes.

Kids in beginner classes have clapped 250f's....still a hell of a lot more bike then the 230
I know, but they usually don't know how to ride them. Obviously the 230 will be underpowered but should be capable of winning at that level. Not as easily as on a proper MX bike but still capable.

Just be a man and go buy a KTM 250SX.

I'm kidding......being safe is the most important thing.....having fun a close second.

Go for it. I've raced my KLX140 against big bikes at least a dozen times. They will obviously out power you all day, but if you can corner and keep your momentum, you'll start giving them fits. Don't worry about jumping it either, it'll hold up to most jumps on a track. As far as upgrading the suspension, I would go with springs for your weight first. That stock form suspension will actually hold up pretty good.

Here's a picture of my buddy Blake racing his 230. He just raced it yesterday in the 250 Novice class, and got 3rd. I believe all he has done to this one is a pipe, and 19/16in wheels.

Just work on shrubbing the jumps harder so you don't catch air.

Bought it from a guy who "raced it". Its sweet and looks like a race bike but not sure if I believe the guy.
Bike Specs
2007 Honda CRF230F
Bored to a 250
BBR exhaust system
Cam breather
Red, Renthal 62 tooth rear sprocket
16 tooth front sprocket
428 Krause chain
Suspension is stock I believe (showa brand)
18 inch rear tire
21 inch front tire
Gold Pro Taper Conture handle bars
Red brake and clutch levers
The bike rips and rides very well, I am only worried about jumping. I ride this bike everyday on trails and want to get started on the track. Will I be alright to race on the weekends? Also if I upgrade the forks and rear shock will this bike be competitive?

A CRF230 bored to 250?Huh 16/62 gearing?Huh A BBR exhaust, a cam breather, and a 428 chain?Huh .....none of this makes sense. Sounds like a highly modified PIT bike.

Are you talking about something for adult mini-bike racing in someones back yard?

That bike was not meant to jump. Tough bike, but not meant for that. I'm sure this frames are probably similar. Just get a 125.
18 21 is stock for a 230f. Also what year was that xr?

Buy a real mx bike. Jumping that bike is plain dangerous. Find a solid cr125 or crf250. The faster you get on that the better off you'll be. Or if those are too big get an 85. Go to a dealer and check out the swing arm, forks and frame on real mx bikes. This sport is dangerous enough as it is, don't increase your chances.

Its a 21 inch front and 18 inch rear, that's what he was referring to.

unfortunately red anodized hard parts aren't going to make it faster or safer. I think you would be better off selling/trading for a 125. even a 90s 125 in good shape will be more capable and safer. I learned how to ride a track on an xr80r and in hindsight the terrible suspension made me learn to jump awkwardly.

I also have a 230 as a play bike. Anyway, why did your buddy go with the 19/16in wheels? What are the benefits? I think it is pretty fun with the 21/18 combo.
