I'm all for electric bikes (so long as we don't have to take a step backwards in terms of performance, range, reliability, or price), but That argument isn't applicable.
Not to mention even with fossil fuel generated electricity the efficiency is inarguably far superior
http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/the-true-cost-of-powering-an-electr…
Right now, today, solar isn't better...it's less efficient, and therefore more expensive than oil...that is why electricity still isn't renewable.
I have no bias towards fossil fuels...I don't care where our energy comes from....I just want it to be as cheap as possible. And right now, fossil fuels are the most efficient and therefore the cheapest.
Maybe one day Solar (or wind, or hydro, or nuclear, etc. etc....collectively or individually) will surpass fossil fuels in efficiency and affordability...and when that day comes, I'll absolutely support that energy source...but that day isn't today.
So for now, electric vehicles aren't powered by a renewable energy source.
(Never mind all the "non-renewables" in those all important batteries in electric cars)
(Sorry for the tangent, O.P.)
Electric MX looks and sounds extremly pathetic, I will say it again: if it's not gonna be "cool" it won't bring new people to the sport thats how I see it. Rednecks won't buy it.They can build thousands of new tracks but who said there will be people who wants to ride? I think scooters are really fun to ride, so why skaters and bmx'ers are making fun of them instead of riding one? Because scooters are lame, no matter how fun they are no one treats them seriously.
But that's my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong, time will show us.
And comparing motosports to football... I don't know what to say.

I mean, you could tell Roczen that he sucks...and he'll actually hear you. It'll bring an entirely new element to MX...
See, you now have to buy a 4 stroke for your electric bike!
Here, people can hear Moto GP, NHRA, Indy, Nascar, while in their homes.
companies either adapt (start making parts that are in line with the current market), or they die. ever hear of supply and demand?
It started about Alta, but now it's like a 2 vs. 4 stroke thread. Fuel injection vs. carbs. Electric start vs. Kick.
Look I am not saying that I am against dinosaur burners, just that it is what it is. One of my favorite things to do is wrench on my MX bikes and that ain't gonna be necessary any more. But it also doesn't mean you can't ride what you want. You Polocks probably have more freedom than the Yanks any day. Shit ride over to Russia, they probably let you run without an exhaust pipe. Have 1 strokes, 2 strokes, 3 strokes, 4 strokes, nuclear and whatever else you want.
But out on the track you're gonna be getting waxed by some kid on an electric bike that is faster than anything you can come up with in your machine shop at home. It's a simple matter of efficiency and the ability to precisely manipulate the same.

And about F1, check some videos from 2004 and compare it to "superior" technology that we have today. You can go even further and compare 2004 F1 with formula E. It will make you really sad about the future of motosports.
Mom says " electric bikes are for boys that wear skinny jeans and sandals"
Our own local track that is the only MX track in the whole of the U.K. to be open 7 days a week is under fire for noise, like it is every year....every year the owner attends court for the same people that complain about the noise....how long will the court keep giving him the green light?...
The Alta idea i think is awesome, no noise!, think about it.....would you rather ride quiet or not ride at all?, i know my choice.
As far as aesthetics of the bike go, those will change. There has been a number of "ugly" bikes that have looked "like ass" over the years. Not to mention looks being a subjective thing.
As for customizing, most people can't handle what is out there. The electric bikes will potentially be even faster. Customizing won't be in the same manner we do it now with exhausts and things of that nature. Instead it'll be more motors possibly or ESC's and batteries. Pegs, bars, triple clamps, suspension, plastics and graphics all remain customizable. Locally, I see most bikes stock and a fair number even running stock pipes. So is customization really a barrier to entry?
government contracts for their bikes. That's usually a way for a company to get their production up and going. I'd imagine the "stealth" abilities of electrics can be very important for military applications.
