I am the Director of Motorsports for Monster Energy and the person that oversees motocross and supercross for the brand. It has been posted on this site by GuyB, that "Monster Energy is the driving force" behind a 22-race Supercross series. This a false statement and misleading. Monster is only aware of the 2017 schedule that the promoter of the series has posted. We have not been informed of any decisions or changes to any future schedules - Supercross or outdoors.

Monster Energy Company has supported the sport of Motocross and Supercross for 15 years by sponsoring riders, teams, track owners and series, and we plan to continue our support of the sport we all enjoy.

Respectfully,
David Gowland
Director of Motorsports
Monster Beverage Company.
So, your not interested in expanding your marketing platform by reaching more people?

Seems like it would be good business to be "driving this"......

Maybe it's Redbull and Rockstar trying to make y'all look bad? Well I for one think it makes you look good!

David,
Thank you for clarifying Monsters current position,
Although can you advise us of Monsters position if 22 rounds were presented to you for 2018?
And your thoughts on a few international rounds?

Mark.

I say 22 SX rounds with 22 MX rounds mixed in so you could have 2 SX then 3 MX rounds. No breaks for Easter and other nonsense. This will make the races more regional reduce travel costs for the privateer and allow more exposure for the sport nationally.

I've known GuyB over the years, not closely but close enough to safely label him a "straight shooter". He's the media insider/type that, despite overseeing the largest avenue to spread rumors and hearsay, he pretty much strays from doing so. He will only post very relevant info when the "jungel drums" are giving him reliable info.

With that being said, for him to not only start a thread, but to specifically mention Monster in it. Well that should tell you something.

I think Mr. Gowland is simply doing a poor attempt at damage control at this point now that the opinions of a (possible) extended SX series and rider mandated races (2 USGPs) have shown to be unfavorable toward the green claw.

I bet the people in this thread that think it's an unfavorable move don't drink monster anyway!

So you claim Feld is the party pushing for a 22 race season?

Is that really how it works. The title sponsor finds out about the schedule after the promoter posts it.

This thread is awesome. GuyB went full on covert journalist to rile up the fan base. No one can ever use the "there are no journalists in the moto industry" complaint again. You just have to be perceptive to notice how he goes about it. Respect!

I'd love a link of any riders asking to race more supercross rounds. Please do post that.

As for the rest of this, it KILLS the local motocross scene even faster. It's so short sided it's stunning.
Cant link at the moment. But today's examples, Justin Bogle and Colt Nichols in reply to Brotocross' tweet about the "issue", if you can call it that. Once again only place I've yet see complaining is vital and among people that aren't pro level.

Let's not forget that more and more riders each year are excepting "no pay" contracts, with no real salaries. I'm sure those riders would welcome more races and chances for scoring points with open arms.

We hear that's an idea being floated around, and that Monster is the driving force behind it.

Our first thoughts...

What would that do to the outdoor season?

How many races are too many?
Lets do this! I say we race 50 weekends a year. Lets get Supercross in the Guinness book of World Records. We can be part of history! Lets show NASCAR how to do a burn-out!!!

Hmmm, a 17 round CHASE format doesn't sound so bad after all. It's all in the plan.

In my opinion the sport should move away from Supercross. Most consumers will never ride a supercross track and honestly it would be very dangerous for a novice rider to try it. Supercross obviously takes tons of skill, but to me motocross is a true representation of what this sports all about. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I think if we continue to move away from Motocross side of the sport it will really hurt it at a local and non professional level.

I may have missed a few posts.

Has anyone given thought that the extra 5 rounds , up from 17 to 22, may be the "Chase" ?

Seems possible. There's been a hell of a lot about the Chase idiocy, well, here's a way for Feld to 'invigorate' their series, whilst adding in a few more money makers.

Would you support expanding the current format...?

What's your opinion about the length of the series as it stands...? Thanks for your input...

Too many people here in the know have confirmed this kind of rumour/discussion throughout this thread for me not to believe it doesn't have some serious legs. GuyB does not take this kind of thing lightly. I do believe it is a very dangerous direction for the overall health of our sport.

It seems likely someone at Feld floated the rumor and tied it back to the "sponsor".

A lot of "what if's" spin off of this as always.

What if the purse was a million per event?
What if any bike was allowed?
What if any rider was allowed?
What if it was 1 class with an elimination format?

If the whole show got changed up, it just might change things up.

The state of the rumor at Washougal was Feld working with YS/Monster, which sounded good for neither the GPs or the Nationals. You'd think it would have to have an overseas component; think it would be hard to find that many clear stadium dates just stateside.

Who knows, there's a lot of telephone tag when it comes to specifics. But I'd think everyone involved is trying to position themselves for ten years from now. Have a hard time blaming anyone who is doing that with his entity's best interests first in mind. I also have hard time imagining resources supporting racing growing faster than the cost of racing, and that probably will focus people. Quality outdoor races definitely are a tougher row to hoe logistically and on the riders.

I personally think the sport's resources are and always will be pretty thin and fragile, and that the regional nature of the different series probably is a better economic model and creates more opportunities for more riders, especially those willing to cross ponds. And even if you focused all of the sport's current top SX/GP/USMX resources into one pinnacle series concentrating the talent in one place, I'm not sure it would have the legs to achieve and sustain a MotoGP or WSBK level while leaving a lot of good events and opportunities falling be the way side.

Lots of I's there. Sick

Anyway, it's not reasonable to think that racing will look the same in 10 years, if not 5, and people are planning for that now. Probably the desperation driving YS's drive to try new things. Hope people strike the right balance.

The carnage would be even more spectacular than it already is......

Careers would probably be cut in half for a large percentage of riders. They'd have time to injure themselves at least once more, and maybe twice, each SX season.

Anyone paying attention to how fast Motocross is and the injuries incurred in that discipline (I'm talking "Outdoors" where we often see all the gears in the transmission used).
