I regularly wear my Pro Frame under my jersey and after the first few min I don't even notice it. tape your nips though...forget to do that once and you will be sorry you forgot.

A handlebar cost me half of my pancreas, and I was wearing a chest protector.

A handlebar cost me a sternum, punctured lung, 4 ribs, and a chest tube for internal bleeding......and I was wearing a Thor chest protector.

I usually only wear my neck brace when I am practicing/riding for fun. I wear a Thor under the jersey roost protector for racing MX. Have a leatt chest protector for the woods

Could have been the whole thing. That would suck, eh? Nobody is saying they stop all injuries, but if anybody thinks taking any bike part to the body without a chest pro on is better than if you are wearing one, you are nuts.

Hey man how is your summer going?

It is only a big deal IMO that the FIM is recognizing the existing safety equipment requirements were outdated. This new requirement is a sensible response to the way tracks and motorcycles have evolved since my first race February 20, 1972.

To the person that mentioned next neck braces will be required next give it a rest Chicken Little.

Thanks to those posting testimonials. BTW to the person implying your finish is worsened by wearing protection I disagree based on my personal experience. I got run over in the 2nd turn at GH in the late 90s but remounted and finished the moto. I wouldn't have finished that moto considering the tire marks on my back and rubber on my helmet.

After the ambulance crew dealt with road rash on my left arm (still visible today) I regrouped and holeshot the second moto.

Upper body protection doesn't hurt your finishes but exactly the opposite. It can make the difference between DNF and a finish.

Anybody remember the thread a couple years back where a guy posted pictures after getting stuck under his bike wide open? He had to have the rubber surgically removed from his back and a skin graft to repair the damage. He now wears a chest protector.

The scary thing is some people still don't get it. Oh well you can take a horse to water but can't make it drink.

I've also said (using myself as an example) that you don't have to be that smart to race a motorcycle. This factor IMO definitely comes into the decision to not wear protection.

I've just bought one of them leatt chest protectors with the built in neck brace after going into a tree with a broken branch and doing a rib or two, scared me into thinking it could have been a lot worse!
Tried a lot of different stuff before, just couldn't get get comfortable or would overheat. I've never got along with elbow protection it just seems to cause me arm pump.

And the sky still hasn't fallen with the championship drawing to a close. Haven't read about any riders complaining either. I think this safety requirement was timely and I hope someday we follow suit in the US.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

if you want to find a pound of cure, take up chess. i've heard those guys don't get injured much.

And if all these gear nazi nancies daddies had been forced to wear protection we wouldn't have this thread. Problem solved.

So you'd rather a foot peg to the middle of your chest without a chest protector?

My brother was wearing the Fox Titan body armor, and lost the front end on the first lap of a moto, got ran over...he had barely a scratch on some slight bruising...it goes without saying that without the back protection that would have been much worse.

Yes, you're correct my exact words were: "I'd rather a foot peg to the middle of my chest without a chest protector" Dizzy

I have no doubt that protection like this body armor (Fox Titan) helps. I could be wrong about this but it seems to me most people aren't wearing anything that beefy. They mostly have on things like the Fox Proframe? I can tell at the races though whatever they have on under their jerseys (if anything) is not that noticeable and probably not the protective. I haven't paid to much attention in recent years though so maybe I'm just being oblivious.

My opinion of them is based off the Leatt chest protector lite that I've had for a few years. I'm pretty confident you could put a foot peg through it fairly easily lol. I guess I'm just realizing now that maybe I should be in the market for a new/better one if others really are that much more protective....

This is Vital Bro, I left my logic at the sign-in page Laughing

Really I was hoping someone would somehow have access to some kind of testing or studies but I know that was completely unrealistic. Usually the only way to lure that information out is by pissing someone off....

Problem is, once you ride/race motocross everything else seems boring and mediocre. I swapped over to Jet Skiing the past five years and it's driving me nuts on wanting to get a new bike and start riding again. What can give you the rush and fun factor or MX riding? I wish there was a loophole around getting injured... maybe someday virtual reality will be indistinguishable from reality, heh. It's not even that I'm afraid of getting injured, but at my age no work = lose everything! Sad It sucks to love to do something so much that's a lose-lose situation from every angle from potential loss of work from injury to the hassle of finding somewhere to ride the damned thing. I hate the world where at every corner there's a baseball park that's always empty knowing if there was a MX track local to where I live it would be used literally 24/7 and knowing there's millions of acres of state land/fields up on the mountain across from where I live well away from homes where a small area could be used to build a track and not bother anybody from noise just kills me..... Sad Hell, I have the machines at work and permission from the boss to use them on the weekends to build a MX track.... It really fucking kills me...wish I never got into this sport as a kid... Sad

There is no problem to be solved but your logic and powers of deduction could use some work IMO

I can see a rule that demands upper body protection in the armatures, but the pros should have their own opinion as to weather or not they use it.

I know someone who flew through the windshield of a car from not wearing a seat belt. The doctor claims she lived because she wasn't wearing it. According to this thread, it's safer to drive without a seat belt on. Less protection means less injury, right?

That's why everyone against chest pro's being mandatory still wears moto specific gloves, boots, goggles, gear, and helmets. Whistling FFS.

No kidding. I loaned mine to a friend and never saw it again. I should have at least had a few moments alone with it.

I hadn't even noticed that this was a thing, that's how small a deal it is. I don't know why it's taken this long for it to happen. Riders are wearing basically a helmet, Boots and pyjamas in some cases, and we wonder why we have so many injuries. Always baffled me why more riders don't wear decent upper body protection. Something that's always baffled me even more is riders that wear a body armour but take off the back protector Blink
I started a thread about this little over a year ago and had now totally forgot about this rule change. Grinning
So they obviously don't make a fuss about it, but it's a good rule.

If it is necessary will the material have a standard for impact strength? Is there a cm^2 coverage minimum?

I wear a thor chest pro and it does have a CE sticker but i dont know hat it pertains to. Also it appears to be an injection molded plastic. You would think maybe the would use vacuum formed 3mm polycarbonate which is probably tougher.

What's the difference between the injection molded plastic and the vacuum formed polycarbonate?

Advantages and disadvantages?

Busted out a berm(thought I was going to make it my bitch) and cart wheeled 3 weeks ago. Bike land squarely on my chest. Brake lever was stuck up underneath the nose of my helmet with peg in my chest. Had to lay there till bike got pick up off me. When they lifted the bike my head was still attached. Had to finagle it out from the brake lever. Got a nasty burn on my arm and a busted rib..... I'm a beleiver. Some how I also had a tire mark on my back. I must have got hit on the initial cartwheel as well

I was just being a smart ass. My point of view is that they may not always prevent those types of injuries, but they can only help.

A quick search turned up these numbers. Im assuming the injection process is using abs plastic which can come in many formulas.

Listed here this particular high impact abs has a value of 290 J/m.

Listed here polycarbonate (Lexan) impact values are 600-850 J/m.

I would bet vacuum forming lexan at 3mm would be alot more expensive than injection molding abs. Again im just speculating.

You can read about the Izod test here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izod_impact_strength_test

I've always worn something and kind of go with another layer can't hurt. But I'm not sure intuition equals evidence to the point of coercing everyone to comply without a choice. I am pretty sure it doesn't matter that much to my daily life whether the riders are made to use something they'd otherwise not choose. Have no idea how I'd feel as a team owner or a rider, because I ain't; obviously the people doing it have different opinions about it among themselves, too.

Or, this to me is one of those kit pieces that reasonable minds can differ over. Keep moto fun.
