Can you watch the live local news with any of these setups?

langham/nytsmaC,

Please confirm exactly what is required to cut the cord with Dish/Direct and be able to watch racing and live local news:

Obviously a fast internet connection. How fast should it be on www.speedtest.net? My speeds are below.
How many "thorstream" boxes do you need for a house with 4 tv's? 1 box per TV?
How much $$ are the "thorstream" boxes?
You need to purchase (1) Channel up app per each "thorstream" box for a one time fee of $40 correct?

And other than that, is that all you need or do you need Apple TV/Roku, or similar box?

Thanks for the info, I think a lot of people are fed up with the $100+ DirecTV bills.

I've wanted to dump Dish since they pulled MavTV but the only alternative was DirecTV which I had dumped years ago for the same reason. So I started looking at alternatives. I dumped Dish, almost got SlingTV until I found out it's owned by Dish. I went out and bought a $40 Amazon Fire TV stick and got Playstation Vue for $30 a month. Virtually everything we watched with our $110 a month Dish account is on PS Vue for $30. In addition I have easy access to my Amazon Prime and Netfilx accounts. I'm usually pretty up on technology but I'm totally in shock at what I've been missing and how many months I've thrown away $80 on the company that has done nothing but take away channels. As a NBC Sports subscriber the Fire TV Stick also gives easy access to NBC Sports Extra where I just watched Spring Creek practice directly on my TV, as opposed to sitting at the computer or holding a tablet. The moto one feed which was taken from my $110 a month payment by Dish is also on live and what looks to be Moto two live(both classes are delayed today). If you're like me and have just been paying Dish, DirecTV, or cable because that's what you've always done look into cutting the cord. Here's the story I read when I was looking, http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/playstation-vue-vs-sling-tv/
Get on the electronic s section off Craigslist and get a jail broke Amazon fire it gets way better
No such thing as a "jailbroken" firestick/fire tv. They are Android based which means you can sideload anything you want in the developers section. Only Apple TV requires jailbreaking. You are wasting your money paying someone to load Kodi and the Addons for you. It took me about 20 minutes to do it myself and I am horrible with technology.

Thanks guys! I was going to post a similar question the other day. Out of all the service providers, seems cable is best, but man I am tired of paying 120 a month to watch supercross, and have nbcsports. I have to pay another 20 a month for MavTV so I normally just watch it on the app. I ordered up things you have suggested, and am on the phone with Charter now to disconnect the television! Thanks again

Great thread.. Just got my Fire Stick today; I've got the fire box on the way too. Ready to tell Time Warner Cable to shove their $160/mo billing up their ass. Unfortunately I think I'll be sticking with them for internet provider though... Pretty sure my current internet speed is the 50mbps one; will I need to upgrade to a faster speed so as to not have to deal with buffering and what not

I haven't 'paid' for any 'Tv for over 13 years now. Don't miss a thing! Of course having the internet and something to use it with has its cost.

I definitely agree with buying a fire tv box and side loading Kodi onto it. There is a short video on yourtube that shows you how. It's pretty easy. I have a large movie collection on dvd that I backed up to mp4. Over 900 movies. With Kodi I have my own Netflix basically. And not to mention there are tons of other free things on Kodi you can watch.

Click on the Link http://www.thorstream.com/ and you will get some answers. The box is the ONLY thing you'll need, unless you want the Channel up app and that price varies but it's usually around $40-$80. They have specials all the time.... I paid $250 for my box, but I've seen them on special for $200 on holiday weekends.
You can unplug the box and move it to any TV in the house. I have a buddy who has boughten 5 of them. One for each TV, but it's overkill, IMO.

Just install Free Telly on your smart tv no box or fire stick needed.
FreeTelly is essentially a custom version of Kodi that comes preconfigured with all the best addons and customization's.

did the apple tv xbmc for years, but it is no longer supported, so I switched to fire tv......Just go to tvaddons.ag to learn how......$35 bucks on amazon. The best money you will ever spend.

We are entering a new age. The streaming age. The music and film industry are swimming trying to figure out how to combat it. If you know how you can download any MP3 to your library or stream any movie there is. There are even legal places like pandora where you can listen to free content. How do the producers make money??????? I am not sure what will happen, but pretty sure it will wind up with a "pay per stream". They had it right earlier with DIVX. Then they abandoned it. Bad mistake. Whatever content is out there, will pretty much stay out there at this point. Unless they come up with a way using tech to combat it, I am not sure what will happen. Why produce content, only to have it stolen....

Now how is this moto related.....You can stream the moto's.

In the end, the cable or fios wins. Everything coming into or out of your home will run on these two services. Copper phone is dying and so is "cable tv". Just pay for internet and stream everything else seems to be the way it is going.

Thats some crazy speed. Of course that is the speed between you and your local server(simi valley). The speed of the internet does not approach that speed. Especially when you are probably streaming a link from a third world country, or not even a country, just an island somewhere..........Its not your fire tv.....Its somewhere in the system. You can stream any movie in HD on 8MB or less. You have many times what is needed. Pretty much anything above 25mb is a waste of speed with one or two devices running. Now the more people streaming in the house, the more you need.

I must be missing something with the Firestick/Kodi setup as I can't seem to find anything worthwhile to watch with the popular apps. I sat down with it a few times for a few hours each and came away frustrated each time.

also FWIW.....most things are android/kodi based. Yes you can pick any box that supports kodi, but I would pick one that kodi is likely to support in the future. I will sell you my apple tv cheap....It was once state of the art. The Thorstream, is just running kodi.....As soon as that guy takes up making something else its all over.....You won't get updates....go to tvaddons.ag. They list supported boxes, but the amazon fire is the way to go.......From there it is just what repositories you select that will open up doors to more and more content. There are pay services that are password protected that you can get stuff found nowhere else.....some though won't allow any more subscribers.

As mentioned, I really think I must be missing something as I see people rave about stuff available on Kodi. I was trying to find stuff primarily on Phoenix, 1channel, Exodus and Sports Devil. Got to the point that it seemed easier to just find stuff on BitTorrent than wade through all the content on the Kodi addons...that seems to be my issue navigating through all the content to find what I'm looking for. For example, I could not find anywhere on Kodi that had the outdoor mx races streaming?

I pretty much agree, easier to just grab a torrent of a movie that you know is excellent quality and can d'load in 3min than sitting and sifting through a bunch of apps and then trying to find a good quality copy. My Firestick came sideloaded with so many apps its crazy, but finding great content is kind of a PITA.

Torrents are a good way to go too....But no live streams obviously. Its all good, whatever works for you......THere is some good stuff on KODI.....but I agree it is not the most user friendly situation around.......

You will need 1 channelUp account for each android box you have. You can purchase the ChannelUp accounts for $39.99 at www.thorstreamdirect.com purchase/shop tab pg.2.
You don't have to use Thorstream boxes. There are tons of other brand boxes for a lot less money. like https://www.entertainmentbox.com/product/ebox-t8-v4-tv-box-latest-kodi-… You just have to do some research. Tons of the boxes on Ebay. You will need to spend some time with the box so get a keyboard with it.

Btw you can load kodi on a laptop or android phone and many other devices to try it out. No need to buy anything initially.
Channel up is an illegal subscription service. There are many out there. They come and go as they all get shut down eventually, so keep that in mind when paying up front for a service.....when megaupload got busted it really took out alot of content but it rebounded.

Dumped DTV and ATT DSL last month was paying $180 a month total. Got an antenna for the locals which works awesome and picked up a ROKU 2. I subscribe to Sling now (it has the content we were most interested in) (the $25 package plus a $5 add on) so $30 for that and have the 10 mbps Comcast cable internet at $20 per month. I am totally happy with it, we only have two in the household so the 10 mbps gets the job done nicely. The only drawback to my set up related to watching the Nationals is if I can't watch the second motos live I have to wait until they are posted on PMX.com.

The NBC app has practice and both motos up almost instantly as long as you have NBC Sports.

For all movie and TV shows I use Phoenix and Exodus exclusively. Phoenix "Valhalla" has only HD movies of high quality so it takes a little longer for the "still in theaters" movies to get on there normally. If you want things they don't have you can go to the other Phoenix areas or Exodus. For most TV I actually use the channel apps that are available such as NBCSports app, Fox Sports app etc. You will need to get creative on how to register them as you need to have a subscription to get them... You also have the AMA Pro Addon for Kodi however I don't use it as I have better options.

Yeah, just be aware that a lot of this stuff will work for a while then it won't.

I had SlingTV for a while, it was ok, but no real DVR Functions. You'd pause something to take a leak and comeback and the stream would be lost taking youback to real time. Or their on demand stuff would not allow FFWD and force you to sit through commercials etc.

I finally just jumped on DISH's promo for $50/mo including DVR locked in for 2 years. The DVR is huge and makes the whole thing simpler. I don't get NBC Sports os FS1 but can watch the MAVtv stuff on the NBC Sports app and caught the SX on FS2 reruns. Anything I can't catch their you can find on youtube or Daily Motion on FireTV.

I have Kodi also, but a lot of the stuff is poor quality and you have to page through all sorts of stuff to find something good. Easier to catch good movies on Newgroups or Torrents.

Firestick is not very good. Go with the actual box or a Roku. Honestly, I have a couple PS3s and a PS4...but we end up using the Apple TV's and log into the individual applications.

Just for fun here in my current connection haha...

So I was looking at cable alternatives tonight and came across Sling TV, and was surprised that for the $25/mo option you get a bunch of channels including Fox Sports 1 AND 2, also NBCSN. My main reason for always keeping cable was always SX and MX, which now seems like I can finally cut the cord and still see the races live for way less. A friend of mine told me that the Fox stations were a newer feature, so maybe we should give this another look. No MAVTV, but you can watch those motos live online anyway.

I am DirecTV sub but have a lot of friends who have cut the cord.

The key to DirecTV is to call them once a year and "renegotiate". I pay under 70 bucks a month, and have for the last 6 years, and get a shit ton of channels, plus all the moto they offer.

My friends who have cut the wires are always talking about what a great deal they have going on. However, they are running multiple different Netflix like dealios, that when all added up have to be costing them at least what I am paying. Plus, I can just grab a remote and watch in any room of my house. Plus, my wife and kids can easily watch. Watching TV at one of my cord cutting buddy's house is a mess. It takes him forever to get a show pulled up, and he simply just doesn't get a lot of pretty standard channels.
