SHARKS WITH FREAKIN LASERS ON THEIR HEADS!!!
i feel better already ...
Top 4 from the heats and 1st in both semis get front row. Next fastest rider gets option for 11th gate pick or second row. Fill in the rest after that.
It would also help with first turn carnage and help keep all of the "fast guys" up at the front from the start.
Really, only the riders on the outside of the rear row would be at a disadvantage (like being on the outside of a 20 rider gate). How many times have we seen a guy get a good start, cook the turn, push everyone wide and someone behind him gets the holeshot? The back row guys would still have a chance.

Every damn race im hoping (the top dawgs) all get out up front.. but nope here comes a few other strong riders blasting to the front.. who will fade unless the stars align. Now im stuck as a fan watching him get held up by a few racers because they're riding a wide bike (because they know theyre slower)... and the leader inches away then hes lightyears ahead of the guy whos come from say 7th to 3rd or 2nd...annnndddd the race is over.
On the podium, i get a "If i can get a better start speech"
I say drop the timed qualifying...for qualifyers Run races and make a gate of 10 in front 10 in rear (based on last years season ending points for the 1st round only, then the previous race for rounds 2 to the last one).. based on your qualifying position to make the night show will determine your grid start location (for heats only) then every successive race etc will have the spots placed accordingly.
Fans get more racing and a higher quality of racing and less excuses
Here are some of my previous comments on the issue...
I say scrap the whole format. Go back to 2 qualifiers and a LCQ. Then do a 30+ 2 main or two 20 lap mains. Give every rider a drop in the series and we will have a great championship battle. The way it is right now, once a rider crashes out once, he is essentially eliminated from the championship unless his name is Villopoto. IMO a single 20 min main just doesnt do the event justice. They truck in all that dirt, market the hell out of the race, just for a single 20 min main?? Cut out some of the fluff and do 2 points paying mains for the same price as one. With a 20 min main we can hardly ever see any real battles or comebacks. It just goes by in the blink of an eye and not much really develops, its an all out sprint and usually ends up in chaos, catastrophe for many, and a runaway for the leader.
It really sucks that the field is decimated so often and the championship is usually decided or near decided with several races to go or is 2 man race rather than a 5-6 man race.
The start gate is an iconic part of our sport. Any uneducated spectator can see that everyone has a relatively fair shot (I am not a fan of gate pick by qualifying and would prefer a lottery) and the danger factor of 22 riders into 1 corner creates action unmatched in other motorsports.
What would likely happen with a grid start is what happens in most motorsports, no passing as the fast guys just leave the rest behind. (Why do you think yellow flags are used so much to turn it back into a race?)
I would be on board with 2-3 throw away's to keep the series close. Fans would rather see rider's go for it than lay back and be safe. Injuries happen and this might allow for some recovery time.
Make all the tracks easier... if you want tight racing... if you got a sport where most everyone can't do everything and
you're calling yourself a pro you got a problem... Same with outdoors... If you're a pro & can't even jump "the leap"
"450" "Red Bud" why are you there?
Pit Row
This idea promotes competition, it doesnt fall back on some gimmick like a joker lane or inverted start.
Whatever changes may or may not be coming i hope it involves more high stakes racing and less low stakes qualifying or crummy gimmicks.
A grid wouldn't lead to better racing. It would lead to runaways. The top five guys would start in the same spots every week for 17 weeks in a row. Super boring.
Not to mention starting is part of the skill it takes to be the best - the gate start is the trademark of our sport. I'm sorry for the other guys that Dungey starts in the top 3-4 every week, but that isn't an accident. If he manages to do it consistently, that means that it can be done. So instead of being disappointed at the format not letting all of the other contenders get great starts every week, maybe you should be disappointed at the contenders for not putting it together.
Pull up some vid of those races that were red-flagged and restarted in a grid. How exciting were those starts?
Better still, pull up some vid of Stewart or RV coming through the pack and then let's talk about good racing!
I think MX/SX has the poorest qualifying/scoring rules of all motorsports. That being said, I still love the purity of the sport and its my favorite of all followed by F1.
Anything contrived, such as inverted starts, or points reset (chase) is total crap and has no place in motorsports. Rather than the Chase, do the drop and things will get interesting.
