I would say the majority of the elite pro's did not have rich Poppa's. Sure, a large number of top amateurs have family money but in my experience, the one's that come from wealthy families don't become "the greats" in the sport.

Im an old dude, some of you guys saying negative comments about Hannah never saw him ride. He was super unbelievably fast in his prime! Also people who think the top riders didn't train back then are also completely wrong. Hannah, Bailey, O-show all those guys trained their backsides off. I used to do Triathlons and bikes races back then and the O-Show or Broc would show up and beat almost all the sport specific pros!

Broc? He sounds slow like a C rider....

Some facts.

Hannah used to run 6 minute miles for 10 miles. He raced a non-powervalve works 250 twostroke with 6 inches of suspension on unprepped tracks for 45 minute motos.

And 22 year old know-nothings who only know this sport from Carmichael's retirement to the present want to shit all over him and his opinion.

Wow this whole thread boggles my mind, wasn't there a thread about Johnny O'Mara not being equal with other great riders of his era? These youngsters know nothing about the history of this sport, it's very sad when some trail rider says that Hannah is irrelevant, riders from the 70's and 80's are some of the toughest racers EVER in this sport period!!! Even compared to today's riders, not knowing that just proves you don't know shit about motocross

It comes down to heart. Doesn't matter if you're riding the best there was against the best there was in 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, or 2016, I know Bob says it takes "heart" over anything else and not like "aerobic heart"...More like courage, guts, determination, sacrifice and "will to kill your competition everytime" you hit the track. How many guys have the "killer instinct" these days. (Perhaps another thread idea?)

Maybe this is the core of of Bob was saying...if you have "the heart" to be a champion, you don't need trainers, PED's, etc. because your "heart" and desire to destroy the completion will help you train yourself to win, run 6 minute miles, etc. Put Bob Hannah's heart in a C Class rider today and he'll be the next champ.

If you keep reading in that interview that's why he said if he would've done anything differently was to "back it down". Win by 2 seconds, not 40. But he couldn't help himself, he wanted to destroy the the comp. He'll say the same thing about RC...because he knows RC had heart.

Amen brother! 14 inches of travel on a perfectly groomed track for 30 minutes is wayyyyy tougher than 45 minutes on shitty 43mm forks on a track that looks like the moon lol. The new guys are tough, and the old guys were as well. Most of the old guys on vital realize the new riders are badass, but hardly any of the young guys on vital seem to think the old riders were any good. The "corner speed" was slower back then because the tracks were different - not because the riders couldn't carry speed.

i don't think they are any less fit/hard/talented than current riders, but not miles better either, its hard to make any comparisons because everything is so different, from the bikes, to the tracks, to the mentality and publicity,

I"m with you. Not to take anything away from RC, but damn, Wardy, Bailey and O'Show were doing freaking triathlons but people talk about how RC "ruined it for everyone else" and changed the sport just by training hard? I get that Baker has a very scientific program. But I'm pretty sure the three I just mentioned had structure to their programs as well.

Speaking to Hannah's relevance... damn, he was still winning outdoors until what, 87 MXdN? On certain days, he still beat the best of that era.

Been riding my vintage '78 a lot lately. And when I watch old national races with guys riding those dinosaurs, I am amazed by how much groundspeed those guys were carrying, because believe me you feel things on the old bikes that you don't even notice on a modern one. It's the jumping and SX whoop techniques where the sport has evolved so much. Watch some old outdoor races (80s, 90s, etc) if you want a fair example. I remember watching RJ wheelie his 500 through fifth-gear roller whoops at Lake Sugartree, and it didn't look very different from what I just watched Tomac do at Daytona.

So sure, if you have the "fantasy matchup" where a 22-year old Hannah matches up against Dungey on a 450F on a supercross track, of course it's going to be a blowout. But if that fantasy matchup was at Southwick..maybe not so much of a blowout.

My main issue with Hannah's comments is he is essentially slandering RV, gotta be careful with stuff like that if you don't want to get sued...

Anyone remember when an essential part of motocross was being able to find the smoothest line rather than just blasting wherever you want on the track?

it plays a part in the whole picture in todays MX world, , would have Hannah put up with the expectations of Twitter, Instigram, facebook etc and the PR that everyone is expected to do?

its takes more than just heart and speed to make it today, as it did back then,

Absolutely. This thread prompted me to break out an old vhs tape I have of the 87 Mt. Morris National. The dirt was very light colored dry hard pack. There wasn't a rut to use as a berm in every corner. And I'm not trying to minimize what the riders do today , it's just how the sport has changed.
