TUSK CLUTCH KIT with heavy duty springs

Edited Date/Time 6/30/2015 5:54pm
Anyone try the tusk clutch kit? Looking to buy one for my 2012 crf250r since I don't have the money for a Hinson. Heard a lot of good and bad reviews so I figured I would get some more thoughts and opinions!

Go get the replacement -Made in Japan- plates & springs kit from UFO-USA...or...

Throw a Torq-Drive by Rekluse in it and have a clutch that LASTS!

The heavy duty springs are great, you get a better feel of the engagement point. I'd stick with the stock steels/fibers from honda though. But honestly I haven't tried the tusk plates, just their springs. I think you can get just the springs for like $5 new.

stay away from the Tusk Kit. If you are riding anyting off-road just stay away.

Get the replacement OEM system, Hinson, or Rekluse.

I know the Tusk Kit temping price, but it will not last.

They work well for me. They last
at least a full season on ktm 300 sx. For 50 bucks, give it a shot

Tried the springs and plates.. zero problems. Worked fine.

I'd ask the folks that stated you stay away from them for specific personal experience that was bad. I've had nothing but
good results with TUSK products

I had a Tusk clutch with HD springs in my '04 RMZ250. The fiber plates wear off in hairs...plugged my oil pickup screen, starved the top end for oil...piston, cylinder, head and cams had to be replaced. Pulled the screen and it looked like a cat turd covered in a hairball. I will never, ever run a Tusk clutch again

Here's the screen...just so you can see what I'm talking about....I have pictures of the cam journals too, but I don't want to make you sick. a $50 clutch cost me $1700. Was a hard, expensive lesson to learn. the only reason I didn't junk the bike over it was that I already had $4k in the engine. Don't walk...run away as fast as you can. Top screen feeds the top end, bottom screen feeds the tranny.

Even when the budget it small, going cheap on internals of a engine is never a good choice. That screen picture above says it all.

I've installed several sets for guys who are budget minded and I have heard of zero complaints or failures from the Tusk kit.

the fact that you put 4k into a suzuki kawi hybrid bike that is known for head problems says alot about your life decisions.

TUSK does have good quality products I especially like their oversized front disc brake kit. I've never had a problem with any of their products

I've put a Tusk clutch in a YZ125, KTM150, and YZ250 with no problems in any of them.

Perhaps, but the fact that other than the above mentioned issue the bike's been reliable as a hammer says a lot about my skill as a mechanic and engine builder.

Still doesnt explain how you could spend 4k on the motor of a 1800 dollar bike. maybe it explains that your mechanic is overcharging you? I had the bike as well and im not trying to be a dick ...im just in awe of how much $$$ is dropped on bikes for most lilkey pointless motor work when usually people need to just practice corner speed.

Well my take, I have run the Tusk clutch plates in both my YZ250 and my son's YZ125.

On his 125 they were lucky to make 3 races before they were toast, on my YZ250 I have never had an issue when I ride it, but if my son races it we were lucky to make it to the end of day before it slips like a greased pig.

For the record he currently is quite a bit faster than I am.

We changed over to Barnett clutches and have never had an issue. Tusk seems to be fine for trail riding etc. But if you ride hard and use a lot of clutch you will have issues with Tusk.

First off...that money was spent long ago. 2nd...it's a GNCC bike, and I'm about 215lbs. I needed more power than stock would get me, and I didn't want a 450. As for the mechanic, no charges there, because I am the mechanic. I built the bike from a basket case. Started from a bare frame, and stripped the cases bare.

I had them years ago on a yz250. In the first moto I pulled the clutch in on the start. Before the gate drop, they swelled up.so fast the bike lurched into the gate and stalled.

I managed 1 lap and they would go from full adjustment to nothing g. Rocky were cool and sent me a refund, but it cost me a whole days worth of race fee.

I have them on my 2006 yz250 right now. So far I have had no problems with them at all, they work great!!

Ok... so my takeaway. If you are not a clutch abuser, and you run either a 2 stroke or a dual oil system like the Honda save the money and try a tusk clutch

Used them in both my Yz250 and CR250 smokers, no problems. Didn't last one weekend in my YZ450f.

I've never seen anything good from those clutch plates...ever. In an XR650 they don't last. In a CRF450 R or X...they don't last.

The craziest thng to all of this: you can get a good price on Good Plates that YOU KNOW will last.

The craziest thing part II: sometimes you actually spend just a bit more for "bullet proof".

I'm jus' sayin'...

One lost day of riding or racing isn't worth the difference in price, nor is having to do the job twice. You get what you pay for.
6/30/2015 4:42pm
You can just buy a new set of OEM fibers, you dont have to replace the springs/steels every time you do a clutch. A set of fibers for a CRF 250 is like $70

I have been real lucky with my clutches over the years. On 2 stroke and 4 stroke both , and I was hard on them in my 2 stroke racing days.I ran OEM for the most part , but used the Barnett plates as well , and never had a single issue. I can't speak for the Tusk clutch set. Seems there is a love-hate relationship between some of the guys here.
