Those deals are pretty weird. Monster is the main sponsor of SX but they can't sell Monster at the races because the arenas are sponsored by Coca Cola.

The problem is GoPro already has an exclusive contract in place, maybe that will change in the future.

I don't think he will quit the series over this, he has too many other sponsors to represent.

For 1/2 mil I would fight that fight. I mean I would get my lawyer to see just how air tight that Go Pro contract was. That being said it sure sounds like he wants a way out of the outdoor series. The fire may be gone for Chad,

If you know the answers to any of the following and are willing to share any of that information I and others on here would appreciate it. Reed commented in the interview with Matthes that the amount paid by GoPro wasn't much, was he talking about the overall contract, what the riders get, or both?

When was the first GoPro contract, for what length of time, and how many times have they been renewed?

Do you know how much the the GoPro contract with MX Sports was for? Have the terms changed since the original contract?

What are the rider contracts with GoPro? Have the terms changed since the original contract?

Do all of the riders get a base contract and the top tier guys negotiate that price up to participate?

When do these contracts expire for MX and SX?

Since it can now be shown how much a rider and/or team can command for a camera contract do you think the promoters would be willing to limit the exclusivity of such contracts and only sign a contract granting "the official" camera title or will this only make things worse with more money on the line.

It's a business contract and Reed, or any other rider, has no right to circumvent the rules of the contract. Reed is riding in a organized event. There are rules that he and all riders need to follow. Perhaps Reed should have done a little business diligence and asked if there would be any objections to wearing a competing action cam before signing a contract with them. I would hope that all teams were notified of the exclusivity of GoPro before the season started, at least I would hope so if that is the case.

This seems to me like it has nothing to do with principal and all to do with money. I'm sure Reed isn't getting a paycheck from 360Fly cam if he's not wearing the camera during the series.

I respect Reed's talent as a rider but always thought he's had a very entitled, arrogant attitude as a person.

The GoPro contract is with NBC/AlliSports, not MX Sports. They use the revenue to produce the TV shows, just like in supercross. GoPro basically invented the space -- personal action cam -- and they have had an exclusive deal for on-track use for several years (and that's not anti-trust, desktop lawyers). The first I personally heard of Chad's situation was on Friday afternoon when he texted me. I hope we can work this out to keep him in the series.

Some keep saying it isn't helping the sport grow to have an exclusive deal with Go Pro but how do you know that? Maybe the money they get from GoPro goes toward the broadcast so it can be seen live, maybe some of that money is used to cut the check to Asterisk before the season starts. You don't know how that money is being utilized and wether it benifits the sport as a whole or not and it doesn't mean it's going to just line the pockets of the promoter. As someone already mentioned, the NFL has exclusive contracts and so does NASCAR and many other sports. Ryan Newman used to be sponsored by Nextel until Sprint started sponsoring the series and he couldn't renew his contract once it expired costing him his title sponsor. I understand Chad's frustration but that's just the way the world works.

they're getting the SHAFT. I've heard some numbers that it's costing fighters- ranging from 12k/month to mid 6 figures/year.


Exclusive gopro is somewhat similar.

NFL has a strong union, doesn't matter... The 49ers QB got a deal with BEATS headphones, can't be SEEN wearing on tv
walking into the stadium ect.

Heavy fines, Bose is the official Headphone of NFL...

Funny this is brought up again. Two days ago I spoke with a current UFC fighter that's just began his career there recently. His exact words was he will lose 15-20K a fight on trunk sponsorships alone. Then said he will knock down a measly $2500 a fight on the exclusive Reebok deal. This will likely drive quite a few outside sponsors away and the newcomers and lower tier guys need that to live. Personally I believe with as many fighters that the UFC contracts they would have a case in court but UFC would be a tough fight.

(Just checked the numbers) We're talking a lot of money over 6 years with hundreds of fighters. Deal is worth 70 Mill and is intended to all be paid to the athletes.

Don't fool yourselves. This is a calculated decision by 360Fly and Chad. Gorilla marketing at its best. If Chad was allowed to use it - there would be no noise. They understood the GoPro contract and planned to fight it. This has given 360fly more exposure. How many of you checked out there website already. $500K is cheap for all the hits they are getting now.

Of course this is just my opinion.

What a stinkin' mess. My dog ain't in this fight but I hope all parties can work something out. I do have a big old piece of pig on the smoker and I've got most of the honeydo's already knocked out before noon. So I guess the helmet cam wars are not knocking my world too far off it's axis.

Big probs again to DC for coming in with great inputs. No rumour for months, it is clarified almost immediately.

About Reed, I hope he will not be too much butt hurt, lots of money involved, in his shoes we would also tring to make a push.

The situation is like that for now, it was indeed a "new space", in the future it may be a funding area to dig for riders & teams, after all the competition between Monster Energy, Red Bull and Rockstar have helped a lot the industry. Based on the IPO of GoPro, potentially big ones like Sony coming in, I am sure the next negotiations will be interesting for all parties involved.

500k is not cheap , all the viewers and spectators for the entire series isn't worth that and lets be real only about 1% will even know who or what this camera is.

I doubt Chad cares about how people remember him but it sucks the way his career is winding down. I want him to sail off to cheers and fond memories of such an awesome career but his poor attitude as it comes to an end is really tainting his legacy for me. Ricky did it right.

I haven't seen any racer using anything but GO PRO's.....Even for an outsider looking in it appeared to be an exclusive deal. There are many ways the new crop of corporations will compete against GO PRO. Apple isn't sitting on the sidelines. Chad's sponsor could produce commercials like Tire Discount. Whatever is the outcome sounds like Reed didn't research this issue 100%.

Possibly but with Reed you never know. I learned a few Chad Reed miracle comebacks ago to NEVER ever count out Chad Reed and is why I only missed his SX win by one weekend. I knew it in my bones that after the black flag deal Reed was going to uncork another win.

Reed has the experience and talent to wind up on the podium at a National next weekend if he finds his groove. Guy is both an animal and the consumnate professional racer.

Michael Jordan used to get fined for wearing Air Jordans, as they were against the NBA uniform code....but said fuck it and wore them anyway and Nike paid his nightly fine. He was still allowed to wear them however. NBC should allow riders to wear whatever the fuck they want and just fine the riders that violate a uniform code. I'm sure 360 would gladly pay a weekly fine if Chad could at least run the camera. This sport should look to emulate the big three (MLB, NBA, NFL) in certain areas.
