A 2015 YZ125 is $2200 less than a 2015 YZ450F (based on MSRP).

How much is a full blown race motor for a 125? (seriously asking, I've never had or raced a 125...

Here in Oz. 2k got me an 06 RM 125 engine with 40HP, setup for MX, After market pipe and silencer, no other Bolt on, go fast bits. I'd assume you could get something for less over there.

Same money spent on a new Husky/KTM125 will get you at least 42HP. No bolt on's

I heard Emig mention his 125 had 39HP last night so I'll assume 40HP is enough. My XC engine has 38HP.

You'll still spend more on a 4T once you add 12 months of tires, good enough to race on. Both require oil. Time is also of value.

The motor is going to be the biggest player here when talking price because you would need most other parts on either bike (tires, bars, suspension, etc.). You can buy one 450 and use it for practice and racing for an entire year and not touch the motor (if left stock obviously). A 125 race motor is going to need a lot of maintenance and a lot of rebuilds if used for practice and racing for one year. Me thinks you could spend that $2200 price difference pretty quickly.

By the way, I'm not bashing the idea of a 125 class, I'm just putting things into perspective for people that are quick to say, "it will be cheaper!"

125 rear tire will last at least a few races, 450 rear tire will last one. Not sure It'd make the difference but It'd put a dent in the 450 budget.
450 needs oil and oil filters. and a lot more maintenance time.

What's a piston ring worth?

You don't really need to spend anything on the new 2T engines IMO. Set the squish up and away you go. Useable power is way under rated.

The question needs to be. What are they spending on 250F engines?

Does horsepower have a direct effect on quality of racing and appeal to people outside the sport? Hell no.

7 to 8 years ago F1 cars were much faster than they are now, extra downforce, more powerful engines and it's been reigned back in.

Has the racing been affected from those reductions of speed directly? Nope.

I think we could quite easily have the same quality of SX and MX racing with less power for sure.

Would bike manufactures accept a change like that? Also Hell no.
F1 is now unbearably boring, have you not watched any races recently? Watch the Australian GP from 2015...

One race on a 450 tire is extremely over exaggerated. I raced a 125 for a long time and that baby was hard on fuel, pistons, clutches, and a few cranks. A piston in a 450 would last me through 3-4 top ends on a 125.

I love 125's and hope they never go away. I know for a fact that if I didn't grow up racing 125's I would be much slower now. It's a shame that 250f if superior in performance in every way.

Umm, what? The tire will last the same amount of time... What do you mean the 450 needs more maintenance time? It literally doesn't. What new 2 stroke engines are you talking about? They have been the same since, since two strokes... I mean that's the best part about a 2 stroke, it's so simple.

A 250F is still more reliable than a 125 with the same rider and modifications. But 250F mods and rebuilds will cost more (albeit less frequent). This is really simple stuff honestly.

Rubbish! I wouldn't even bother to line up in the gates without fresh rubber on my 450.
You saying the torque, and weight of a 450 wears a tire no quicker than a 125. Ya trippin! It's not even logical.

More oil changes, oil filters, valve clearances, tire changes. How quickly can you tear a 125 down in comparison to a 450? By the time a lap top loads I can finish tuning my 125. All takes more time.

The comparison needs to be between a 250F and 125 anyway. 250F' are grenades. If you're rebuilding a 125 frequently I'd suggest using better 2T oil and fuel.

You're dilusional man. 450's wear tires quicker, but not exponentially like you make it sound. What about the constant 125 clutch and top end maintenance....I guess that doesn't count as "time".

What clutch and top end maintenance is that?

We going to equate for engine drama's in the budgets? Or just hope for the best.
How's those 450 Honda clutches going?

I have both ATM. I have raced both. I'll agree to disagree. Although, I think you're trippin as well. 450's destroy tires.

If you have to ask you've never raced a modded 125 that was that was singin at 10k for most of its life. Mine went fast, but at the expense of consumable parts.

Been riding and racing 125's for 30yrs.. I've never replaced a top end or clutch through necessity.

I also ride my 125's off road. Where I live, you're either going up or down mountains. The clutch cops heaps more of a flogging in the bush.

I raced Rotax 125 in Karts for 5 years, won 2x Australasian titles. Never blew an engine or replaced a top end. Actually, never spent one cent on the engine in that time. No gears. That biatch revved at a constant 19K. "Go well. Go Shell".

I might grow but I'm not sure about it.
300cc bikes are not as common as 125's
At the Dutch Nationals there are 125 races already, no 300's.
To enter this class you have to purchase the bike which is pretty much useless for other races.
Just needs some more time maybe...

Yeah I think it would be great for many of the reasons stated above. And I'd love to race one again because they're so damn fun.

Weak fuggin argument comparing a 125 to a 450. No wonder people on the outside refer to the level of stupidy inside here. You just can't make this shit up.

Stop trying. In every one of these nauseating threads I bring up the schoolboy and 2 stroke classes, and literally the next post will be "it's crazy that we force our kids to go from an 85 to a 250". Going from an 85 to a 250 and skipping the schoolboy class is a choice, not something forced on anyone.

It seems you , A. Dleary and a couple others have missed the entire fucking point!

Nobody is saying there isn't a 125 or 2 stroke class out there.....what they are saying is.....nobody makes 125's except KTM and Yamaha! And that the other 3 popular Jap brand bikes fucked their own ass by not making them any more. Instead , they push their 250F's on kids coming right off the 85's! Because to be competitive in any regional class , you need to be on a 250F.....which is fucking stupid!

You and the other ones seem to be lacking what this thread means and what people are complaining about. How ironic that you come in here ( totally confused ) and say " These guys are clueless and don't race ".

A.Dleary was right.........JESUS!
3 of the six manufacturers make them, and 3 don't. What evidence do you have that the 3 that don't sell them "push their 250f's on kids coming right off the 85's"? Would you agree Adam Cianciarulo was the most hyped amateur rider since James Stewart? He elected to ride a 125 until his crew decided he was ready for a 250f. On the other hand you have kids that ride for KTM, Husky and Yamaha that elect to skip the 125 and go straight to schoolboy. The key word here is "elect", nobody is forcing these kids to do anything except maybe their parents.

This is getting old. Most pros don't want to race 2 strokes. In the amateur ranks, you can be very competitive on a 250 2 stroke in all the 250 classes. Get one and race it. In addition there are open 2 stroke classes, as well as the schoolboy class for the younger guys. Get a 2 stroke and race it. Nobody is stopping anyone from racing a 2 stroke unless they absolutely won't ride anything but red, yellow or green. From what I have seen of all the vet classes, you would pretty much have to pry the 450's out of their cold dead hands to get most of them back to 2 strokes. You guys are like a bunch of liberal 2 stroke nannies that want to tell everyone else what to ride. Most people who ride like riding a 4 stroke better. Sure, everybody says 2 strokes are so much fun, and light, and easy to work on, but they show up at the track with a 4 stroke in their truck. That is reality. Stop blaming the AMA or Honda and just admit that people ride 4 strokes because that is what they prefer.

It wasn't an argument against your point. I was pointing things out to those few that think racing would instantly be cheaper for some reason.

I compared a 125 to a 450 because with their logic a 450 is un-affordable to race and 125's are the topic at hand.

2 strokes will never come back to the pro racing scene. Everyone is making a big deal About this. The tracks this year have been pretty basic. Wiemer and canard crashes on the simplest double double of the track like Reed said. Bikes aren't a problem IMO. This will all blow away soon

Those (125) bikes burn a lot of fuel and eat a lot of engine parts because they are ran so hard. I don't like them.
I'd like to see KTM powerparts offer a head/ pipe/ cylinder kit for the 250sx that had lower peak hp but a much broader and smoother powerband, similar to a 250F. That would be a compelling package and could run for years. Low noise, etc...

"Go well. Go Shell".

WTF are you blokes doing to your bikes?
Consistent 19k and never did top end work? Sounds like one hell of a barroom story to me. 19k RPM is such a load of BS that I am not going to respond to anything else you say.

And they don't have to!

But for amateur and younger classes the use of 125's makes more than sense.
Now the 1st will come up but that's there already you can race it and only your own stupidity can stop you!

That's not right as long as the large 4 Japanese Manufacturer don produce at least a newer generation of 125's that will not happen. Due to the stupid AMA rule that a 125 can compete in a 250f at the same time it is obvious what will be selected.

Maximum Power is sort of equal at least with some $ you can make it.
The huge difference is the gap in Torque the 250 produce a ton of torque.

But when it comes to power you don't have to go to the larger Companies like PC or others they are a huge Sales & Marketing organization with one target "getting your money" And as long as you don't have the right connections you will never get the same porting job done like you could have with personal links.

I went through those things with my 125's when I raced, watch out for smaller specialized tuning companies the might listen.
Had the experience in Europe, through a friend who knew a Tuner in Netherlands I got my engine done every year for less than 500USD and it was night and day.

I think nowadays you can get it done for about 1000$ at the most.

That would be nice. Not sure if you know Ace B. being you are in Austin, but he put a 300 kit on his 2015 250sx and he says its much smoother to ride...Its just a head cylinder and pipe from what I could see.

Yeah, just like a 450 won't wear a rear tire down any faster than a 125. Sorry mate, any credibility you had is gone.

I worked at the Kart shop I raced for, running the Dyno. Feel free to tell me how it is though.

Valentino Rossi's mechanic's son raced Comer 90's. He used to get us to build his sons engines.
