Man oh man.....

Look at the shine on that Mark Charles works stand!

Factory Suzuki pitting in the dirt?

Dual carbs on a dirt bike? No way, and what's a Puch anyway...Smile

The Husky looks REAL familiar.

Gassin' Gaylon. RIP

Fox Air's with springs plus a little other trickery there.

External spring works Honda forks with internal springs???? Or were they running air?

Soooo much trickness. Were you purposely focusing on suspension today, sir?

Suzuki "school of motocross"... 1981 I believe for me. Wayne Boyer and Bob Elliot (R.I.P.) ran it. I felt like a factory rider!
Great, great time for the sport.

Here are some from the GPs when I was stationed over there in 1985-87. Notice the KTM 4 stroke at the Luxembourg GP in 85.

My dad had that exact KTM (500?) in the first photo. He bought it used in about 78 and after a few years of riding it stored it until 95, finally selling it. I wish he still had it. I rode it a few times and I remember how plush the seat was, at least on his bike. At the time it was trick, but it was all engine if memory serves me right.

Thanks for the great thread FTE.

Is that a Metzler or a Barum in the top shot. If memory serves correct we would occasionally run this monster Barum (might have been a Metzler just not 100%) and it actually got too much traction. I would put loose dirt in front of the rear tire to help break it loose to get the bike up on the pipe quicker.

Ah to be a teenager and a Maico pilot again.

Great stuff, guys. Keep it going!

Joe, the Puch is a single carb open bike (400cc?); Herbert Schmitz (sp?). H. Everts rode one the prior year Trans AMA. Not focused on suspension, but billet!!

I always think the same thing. Bikes these days are so good that it takes a lot of the fun out of it. Upgrading, modifying, trying new ideas....not like it seemed to be back then. Now days you just spend a fortune on a near race ready four stroke that is almost identical to every other bike at the races unless you can afford countless thousands more on overpriced upgrades. I really believe the old guys did have "the good ole days".
