I no longer buy MX magazines, and MXA was one I haven't purchased in over 20 years at least .

I remember late 90's early 00 people would rail on MXA for their love of Yamaha's. YamahaCross Action.

They are out to sell magazines. Orange bikes are the most popular at the present moment, so yea, its KTM action. When Yamaha dropped the 250F in 01, they declared 125s to be obsolete buzzbomb piles of shit. Now that there is a big two-stroke resurgence, they are saying the complete opposite and all of a sudden a 2006 YZ250 is god's chariot.

Just follow the money man, there's no such thing as honest journalism, not even in this tiny, niche-sport.

Not to get into a pissing match with you but are you saying the 250f DIDN'T kill the 125? It most certainly did. The 250 2 stroke making a comeback is a separate point from this. I don't think anyone is claiming the 250 2T is God's chariot. I think the argument is $2500 + reliable + cheap to fix is better for the average consumer than $9000 + expensive to maintain and fix. No one will argue (at least not successfully) that the 250T can compete performance-wise with a 450 but at the level most of us ride at, we need the extra $6500 in our pocket more than we need the extra 7-9hp
Your crazy if you think a 250 2t can't compete(performance wise) with the 450's.
I had an 05 kx 250 that was decked out with a full Eric Goore engine, and isotopic transmission polishing and it flat walked away from all but the most decked out 450's. And it held its own with them.
Was it as easy to ride ...no, but it was outstanding on acceleration. I had to use an 11oz fww to make it controlsble. .
So this 250 2t can't match the performance of 450's talk just isn't true. Even when my bike was stock it still hung with the 4 strokes just fine, albeit with more effort...

Wood screws with some cheap kinda galvanized coating that rusts. Some things are soooo quality, and other things on KTM's leave me scratching my head sometimes.

Well let's see, the kx was quicker out of corners, faster through the middle and was almost untouchable on top.. yes it was more work, yes it was harder to ride, yes you had to shift more, use the clutch and brakes more, but it still easilly matched or beat the performance of the bangers, yes at the track. In straight drag racing througj corn fields the kx was almost untouchable. So yeah, the 2 strokes are very competitive..
AMD I'm on a new honda 450 with some good upgrades, and I still say yes the 2t is more than capable of competing..

Say whatcha want; but, MXA tests the bikes with a wide-spread of riders/skill-sets and they develop opinions that support their rankings.

No way.....I thought it was just Jody racing the +70 class at REM events then writing the test. I read it on Vital.

If you don't like the MXA shootout, turn to a more reliable source with loads of detailed information and fixes for each model that might suit your riding style.

I present to gentlemen the: RacerX 2015 450 Shootout

Every Bike that I've owned that they've tested , I've found that they are pretty spot on with their tests..... when they said that early 90's Honda's were midrange rocketships with crappy suspension, that's what I found also. When they said my 96 kx 250 was strong on the bottom and weak on top, thats exactly how it ran when I got one. Keep an open mind and you'll see that what they say about individual bikes are usually right......

So true.

I guess they all have their place. MXA is still the best mag for me, but the others do have some nice pics and booby girls.

True that.

If you don't have the opportunity to try any of the bikes before buying one, MXA is the place to get the best information on the different bikes year after year.

Yup clearly Carmichaels cr250 wasn't as fast as your kx250.
If it was he never would've had to switch.

Actually the plastic screws are pretty well thought out.....the screw thread is fairly wel sloped and has good strength against the plastic. Wood scres was are tighter as are metal screws. NC iOS NF threads would are even steeper.

They could of installed thread inserts however that would have added grams to the weight of bike.....every little advantage increase espedentualy......

yeah, I used to think the wood screws were pretty chessy, until I stripped the insert out in the tank on my crf and had to cut the shroud off to get it out. It's actually so simple it's brilliant, if you strip it out, melt some plastic back in there, drill a pilot hole and thread the screw back in. Still not a fan of the orange bikes though overall.

They rag on racers for wanting stuff for free, but Jody did the same thing when he was younger.
At REM, MXA wouldn't say the name of an up and coming privateer because he was testing for a different magazine.
They've crapped on riders at races in the past, even though nobody from MXA was at the race.
The GP's were a 2nd rate series, and then Glen Helen got a GP, and the nationals were second rate.
When Glen Helen lost the GP, they were a 2nd rate series again. Not sure what we will see if Glen Helen has both a national and GP like they are supposed to, but it should be hilarious.

i think the bigger problem isn't with the bike tests, but the other content.

Good post..

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but it is telling when you see the same types of comments from the same people. It is obvious that being negative is an art form for some and if they can't be negative they don't really have anything to say about anything..

As a wise man once told me....it takes all kinds.
Ironic, given that Jody is by miles the most negative and spiteful person in moto journalism. No one slams people more.

Their testing is fine and probably the best in the business in terms of trying to relay information, DR maybe second.
