There is of course the irony that pretty much everyone wants to purchase for the lowest price possible and sell for the highest price possible.

I have to be honest, I love when those guys contact me on an ad. I screw with them. Tell them the pick up agent price is $2000 above asking price and I need the buyer's bank info/birthdate/SSN so I can just process his payment for him (Im nice like that). They are so easy to spot anymore so its fun to goof with them. They will usually stop emailing you after about three back and forth's.

I have a friend that owns his own company and has too much idle time on his hands and spends it screwing with people giving away stuff for free on Craigslist. Some of the online arguments he gets in with people are priceless.

I love the idiots who think offering cash will make it acceptable to offer 50% less. I'm selling my bike for $3500, guy calls and says I will give you $2000 cash. First of all offering cash does not change the price of the bike as it was already expected any buyer would pay cash anyway, I'm not taking no check.

My biggest issue is people that negotiate on the phone without seeing the item. If that's all that matters then no problem, I'll strip all the aftermarket stuff off before you arrive, how you like that? Fair is fair, no? Show up, see the item for sale and then talk money. Someone else mentioned "all cash" and the relative amount of current and 1 yr old bikes. Guess what, if you want terms, go to the dealer or your bank, I'm neither. I'm not a bank or loan officer, if I paid cash for this or paid it off, so can you, figure it out on your own. Craigslist doesn't have loan apps and if I was in the biz to loan money, I wouldn't be on fuckin Craigslist. Even on a 30k car or boat, I'm not fronting money to some guy I met in my driveway. When TLD, 22 motorsports, rockstar, YOT, etc sell their bikes, are they taking payments? Hell no and they got way more money than you and me.
I don't have a problem with people making an offer through text, but I do have a problem with "what's the lowest you'll take". I have a price on the ad. . . if you decide you don't like that price, name your price. I'm not going to play a guessing game.

If I decide to negotiate over the phone and I have a price in mind, I just tell the seller that I'm not willing to pay above x amount and if they like it, let me know and I'll come take a look. I don't really even negotiate very often CL items but at least going this route, you don't waste the seller's and your time if you have a cap on what you're looking to spend.

There was a time when these scammers seemed like legit buyers, but you are correct, they are so easy to spot. Now I jsut cut them off (they usually text or email) with "I'm not a schmuck, try someone else", but I think next time I will play along and do what you do.

In the last year, I've bought 3 bikes, and sold 3 bikes. I sold two bikes in the fall and one in the spring. In the spring I got $450 over kbb retail. In the fall, I got $500 and $250 less then kbb retail, which I think isn't too bad, except I had 0 hours on rebuilds on all of them with receipts to prove it. I was finishing up one job as a guy pulled in the driveway for one. I had just replaced the head and valves and it was my first time doing that job, so I was fairly nervous at startup. That's the bike that sold over retail. The others were two strokes in great shape. Along the way of course I was offered several low-balls from people over the phone, usually by text. Each bike sold to the first person that actually saw the bike. The most annoying is when a guy will low ball you then ask if you can meet him half way.

Yep, for 4stroke MX bikes you can pretty much throw the blue book/NADA guide out the window.

Maybe they called it NADA because that's what your going to get for it...lol!

"102mph in a freakin bass boat? that's crazy...."

It was 20ft in length....It held 58 gallons of fuel...but when you left about 15 gallons in it and got rid of the 3 extra trolling motor batteries and took the trolling motor off the front, emptied all the compartments etc... to lighten it. I got it up to 102mph with a hand held GPS attached to the steering wheel.Had a hot foot in it..gas pedal..trim was turn signal trim( ez to operate at high speeds).Had a 12 inch Jack Plate on it also that was set back a little. When you hit that jack plate after you were trimmed out ,it felt life you were floating on air, only about 2-3 inches of the boat was in the water. Full load (capped off with gas, livewell full etc..) with me & another guy ran about 80-85 mph depending on conditions, but you couldn't raise the plate all the way up because of to much weight in the rear (that is where the fuel tanks were),it would chine walk really bad.

i buy, sell, and trade alot of things on craigslist, so i have been thru pretty much every one of these horror stories. I have learned to not put my phone number in the ad, my email only, only after a few emails i could tell if someone is serious or not, i then give them my phone number...its worked pretty good to weed out all the idiots.

But i do have to say, trading anything is the worst, you really have to put exactly what you are willing to trade for...if you leave it open, and just say "open to trades", you get some really STRANGE offers

@swedishmx

I wouldnt give it away but if you can afford to wait till spring it will probably sell. Just lowered my 250f to $2500 firm which is under kbb by 150ish. Dude texts me offering me 2100 when it says I am firm. So many idiots cannot shell out the cash for a nice used bike let alone read.

Because you suck at math and think $2000 cash is 50% less than $3500 I would offer you 2k and tell you that is 25% more than you were asking because you wouldn't know the difference.Tongue
A stack of $100 bills can bring a price down real fast because the seller can see the deal getting done right now, I do it all the time and when people actually see the cash in hand and know they could run down to the shop and get their new bike, they soften up most of the time and a deal can be made.

A few years ago I had to sell my 07 rmz 450 in order to my tuition for the sheriff academy. I was selling it with a few aftermarket parts on it ( P.C. exhaust amongst others ) and was asking for $2,500.00.

It only took about an hour for the calls to start rolling in, mostly one shit show after another until finally a guy called who seemed legitimate and asking all the right questions. He lived only a few miles from me so we met up and I let him take her for a spin...and here is where it went to shit

He shuts the bike off, looks me in the eye and says he thinks $2,500 is a little high and he is thinking $1,500. I told him I am thinking he needs to look for a different bike as I took it from him and loaded it back into my truck. He starts pissing and moaning, trying to be a tuff guy as I am throwing the tie downs on, but I wasn't listening.

Q to a week later and only having a few days left to pay my tuition and I still was getting shady offers ( like a guy who would ONLY meet me between the hours of 2AM-4AM in the parking lot of an abandoned strip mall...no gracias)

Probably one of the worst moments of my life was calling him back asking if he still wanted it, but I didn't have a choice, I didn't have the money to pay tuition without it so I sold it for $1000 under what I should have. The whole time I was loading the bike for him he just had the biggest shit eating grin on his face, and there wasn't a damn thing I could do.

Anyways, sometimes with Craigslist you win, and sometimes you loose your ass.

I move a lot of stuff on Craigslist and have a fun way of dealing with the scammers, especially the ones who want to send a cashier's check for more than the purchase amount. I tell them, "Sure. My name is J. Edgar Hoover, send it to this address," and then I give them the address for the FBI. Sometimes I give my name as "Efrem Zimbalist Jr." Fun stuff!

I have actually had a decent profit from taking a non refundable deposit for some stuff that people think they will be able to get paid off in the 2 weeks or so I give them.
9/23/2014 7:38pm
"whats the lowest you 'd take?" is definitely annoying. But what about when someone wants to sell you a bike, and you say OK how much? and they don't know! they say " I don't know whats its worth make me an offer" they say this because they are so afraid that if they give a price and you say "OK Ill take it", right away, then you might have paid more! such childish shit

That wasn't directed at you Swedish fish... Just lots of people on here that can't figure out why they can't sell their bikes, or why people offer them lower prices. If it's priced accordingly it will sell.... Even junk sells if priced right.

Generally if someone asks me "how much" I'll say "make an offer" because I have already posted a price and by them asking they are trying to negotiate. Unless they're thick they should've looked at the price on the ad. I don't however say "idk what it's worth"

Last year when I was selling my jeep I had it listed at $23k firm, which was actually below kbb, and I was throwing in a set of aluminum rims as part of the deal. People were hitting me with offers of 15-16k then trying to haggle with me about it. I remember one guy offered 15,500. When I said no way man, he came back with "I'd be prepared to offer 16k, but that is absolutely my final offer. When can I come by to pick it up?" Obviously everyone is trying to get the best possible deal on everything, but ridiculous low balling is fucking obnoxious when you're trying to sell something of value.

Hahahaha, this takes the price if it's true!

If you have listed a price in your ad...you have to let the potential buyer make the first offer.
Don't ever start lowering the price before they have given a number of their own.

If someone starts asking about your lowest price before even coming to look at what you are selling...that should be a big red flag that they probably don't have the money anyway.

I can't believe my 3 year old thread got revived, However I do have a fresh one.

2 days ago I listed a clean late model PW50 for $550 bucks. 2 people immediately contact me. One says I want to come look at it, The other says I want it for sure, I'm on my way with cash. I inform the person that wanted to look at it and they got upset because "They were first".

I just moved out of a 5000 sq. foot shop back to my garage, I literally almost gave away several things because I didn't have room for them. I listed a 1997 KDX 200 missing the cylinder for $100 bucks. People asked hundreds of dumb questions when the only thing they should have been asking was when can I come get it. You ether need it or you don't.

And as far as the super low balling. If I see something that I'm looking for priced at way more than I want to pay I just don't mess with it, if we're that far apart on price the only thing that's going to happen is we're both going to get pissed off.

I do wear an xs Shoei Tongue

Update on my listing. I've been talking to a guy who originally made me post on this tread. He low-balled me for $2,200 (asking price was/is $3,500). He tried to play the sympathy card, but for the price he threw at me, pretty much pissed me off. He can go find several good bikes for that price. Sure they aren't fuel injected, have new tires, fresh wheels, new chassis bearings, completely new suspension innards, fresh motor, and a clean vin; but they would at least be in his price range.

Eventually I have worked the guy up to $3,200, but damn if this guy doesn't want the world and that bike for that price. He has asked me if he gets to keep the stand, if I have any gear he can throw in, and all the extra parts I have for it.

The guy even wants me to deliver the bike to him, which I'm actually considering just to get this guy to stop with the bullshit.

Obviously I will need to see cash before I drive an hour and some change to "make a deal'. I'm just happy someone is interested in it. It seems like around my area, if it isn't orange in nature, FORGET ABOUT IT. Our local race series is at least 60% KTM.
