I don't know the answer to the question and is why I am asking. I do know that chest and back protection is not the end all solution to all injuries but am curious to see if either of these guys had back protection. Believe Weimer's back issue is from being clipped at speed by another bike but not sure.

Shane McElrath – Hematoma
Comment: McElrath crashed during practice after Glen Helen and sustained a nasty hematoma on his lower back. He’s since had to have blood drained from his back multiple times and has yet to be cleared to ride by the doctor. His team says the earliest he’ll return will be Millville.

Jake Weimer – Slightly Separated Shoulder and Large Hematoma on Lower Back
Comment: Weimer crashed in the first moto at High Point and was forced to pull out for the day. He missed Muddy Creek and will also sit out at RedBud. He should be back on the gate at Budds Creek.

I wonder if NASCAR would allow drivers to wear a t-shirt and jeans instead of a fire suit.

Exactly. There are some things you should not leave up to young kids, obviously they do not have enough sense to try and protect themselves with the equipment that is available to them. Make them mandatory and both of these riders would most likely be racing this weekend

Nothing is stopping you guys from wearing all the equipment that you want, you can wrap yourselves in bubble wrap for all I care but when you want to make everybody wear what YOU think is safe then you are overstepping into other people business. I bet you all voted for Obama and love Obamacare Blush after all its the same damn thing.

from the clip I saw, (Jake Weimer crash) it could of been a hell of a lot worse, Jake came very close to taking a solid hit from
Malcolm Stewart. he's lucky...

Actually I would never vote for Obama. But I also do not believe someone should go 200mph at Indy in a tshirt and shorts. Or jump 90' triples without chest and back protection. Some things should be left to the sanctioning bodies to enforce and not uneducated participants. That is what real motorsports do, they set guidelines for safety.

When was the last time someone went 200 mph at Indy in Tee shirt and shorts? never so maybe you should lay off the theatrics ? There are some mandatory gear requirements in MX/SX local and national and you can wear more if you like and as much as you like, If you don't think its enough then do something about it and get it changed but I doubt you have any facts that you could present to the people who can make the changes and emotional opinions just wont cut it. Indy drivers used to race and get killed yearly because they were wearing t-shirts and no seat belts. Sports have evolved and become safer over the years despite increased speeds. That is all motorsports except MX/SX which has seen an increase in deaths and injuries over the years while every other Motorsport has gone the other way. That is why you need sanctioning bodies to make safety equipment mandatory and not left up to an individual's choice.

So what equipment will solve these problems ?
7/4/2014 11:15pm
Yeah, I think Jake came out of this okay. Hey, "The Rock" as much as you talk about protection I'm surprised you haven't developed some kind of full-body air bag. Whistling

Oh boy... First they aren't "kids" they are adult professional athletes!!!

I am pretty sure they are more qualified on what they should and shouldn't be wearing than anyone of us.

Maybe they should have reflectors in their spokes or reflective vests...Jake was hit at speed by mookie... You can't protect yourself from EVERY type of injury even bumps and bruises.

Get off your holier than though high horse and take up cross stitch if you don't want to get hurt.

At an amateur level in France, latest chest & back protections are mandatory. (for the riders safety, but also because racing insurances are getting too expensive and become a threat to our sport)

the people who think back protectors don't do anything are absolute fu*king retards, its just common sense to see how they could absorb an impact to your spine from getting hit from behind, i assume no one runs any knee protection then as they`re just bit of plastic?

a proper road race style back protector is very good, but a normal mx style chest protector does not do a lot for impact,

Less Jake was in a Titan suit a normal chest protector wouldn't have done much in that impact. It might have given some coverage but look at the area of his back that is beat up, it's basically all of it. The modern chest pros are rib cage height only.

I am an advocate for more gear tho, I've never felt right riding without a chest protector and just got a titan. I still find knee braces goofy, especially with my tree trunk legs but I like the idea that i'm as wrapped up as can be!

It might not do a lot (I don't fully agree but whatever), but it does more than just a jersey. It blows my mind that some of you guys are getting so mad about possibly requiring the riders to wear chest and back protection. It's not like it's being suggested to give the back a roll cage and bullet proof panels. Maybe it's time to drop the "this sport is for badasses and we don't need any effing protection" mantra and actually use your heads for once.

This might be a valid metaphor if everyone in the US was forced to wear chest protectors while they go about their day. Otherwise it's a shit attempt at excusing pro racers (and role models for many younger riders) for setting a bad example and needlessly endangering themselves. Are you allowed to play HS football without pads? No. Are you allowed to drive your car without wearing a safety belt? No.
Not wearing chest/back protection while racing a motorcycle at speed over rough terrain is about like not wearing a "glove" when you visit a brothel. Sure, you might come out unscathed. But why risk it?
For crying out loud, we're now regulating what can and cannot be present in a rider's piss. Don't tell me we can't have a rule that says they must wear chest/back protection. Clearly some of them aren't smart enough to make the decision for themselves. #Homeschool

I am more surprised pro riders don't wear more crash/impact protection simply from the business standpoint of protecting their season and income. Especially with all the newer under jersey ones with the better materials.

I would, however, be 100% against making it a mandatory requirement.

I am always amazed that the guys are allowed to throw their goggles, pretty easy to lose an eye. Could simply make it a rule, then they would just have to come in and change goggles.
7/5/2014 6:17am
when i brought this up from deanos wreck i was too soft. i just pictured that cut somewhere else. no you cant prevent everything. having that as a fact,i still would be on board with front and back protection as a rule. like crush said,it would become normal soon.
the goggle thing has made me wonder for years.
1-its not worth it.
2-thats all you have. 2Blink
3-make it a rule. come by with out pitting for new ones, black flag. that simple.
4-i think the pit stop would add to tv and sponsor time.
5- imagine the headline, rider loses eye. how many non die hards would say"why the f%^$ dont they have to wear eye protection?" where we accept it as the norm.

Personally, I've ridden with full front and back protection ever since I was able to get on (read "decades ago"). Numerous get-offs that I walked away from because of having it on convinced me it was the right decision. It offers a protective layer for my skin plus the ability to spread a concentrated point blow over a large surface to reduce the effects of the impact. It's probably saved numerous broken ribs and maybe worse.

I remember when open-face helmets were popular and a lot of riders resisted going to a full-face helmet. I heard remarks like, "it makes me feel claustrophobic" and "it's too hot", to "I don't like the way it looks". The pros in general were very resistant to make the switch (as seems to always be the case. Sometimes I think they believe they are too good to need it or think it might restrict them a touch and put them at a disadvantage).

How many people today would seriously consider riding with an open-face and maybe a Jofa or Scott type face/mouth protection (if any face/mouth protection at all)?

Minds change and then things change.

Actually Reed has been wearing a TLD chest protector under his jersey this year.

Bear trap dude. I was referring to the bear trap. See how it was after the neck brace? Smile

These a professional athletes that have been competing since they were in grade 1. Protection is great, but it's also restricting. A neck brace is rare, and combo'd with a chest protector is even rarer. It's all about mobility, weight, and heat for them.

Geico MAKES their riders wear under jersey protection. There are also several riders who use the TLD and FOX under protector.

Not bagging on McElrath or Weimer, not even sure what they were wearing.......but

I'll never get this - NEVER. Why would you not want to wear all the protection available? Especially if your a high paid pro. Why do the teams not insist on protecting their investment?!? I wear everything and don't feel any hindrance or limitation of movement, and with today's technology there is plenty of ventilation and ways to stay cool. I feel vulnerable and ride noticeably slower with less confidence (I've forgotten both chest pro and Leatt at separate times) if I'm not geared up.

I remember when I started wearing a helmet skiing I started charging much harder as well.

I've heard "It holds me back, too hot, it limits my movement, I want every advantage I can get" Really? really?

How cool does it look and how's your freedom of movement when your sitting on the couch with a hematoma losing a championship when you could've potentially just lost a few spots during a moto??

Dress for the crash, not the ride. Funny side story bros. I told my friend that saying when I caught him riding around town in flip flops. He repeated it to some other guy and apparently the guy got it tattooed on his arm a week later.

Are you kidding?? How many times have you crashed with a full front and back MX chest protector. I've walked away from MANY crashes that would've otherwise 100% no question resulted in a hospital visit. This one in particular melted the shit out of the back of my chest pro and just barely got about a square inch of flesh. I'd still be getting skin grafts! Trust me, it's amazing how protective a little well designed and placed plastic and biofoam can be.

I've also impacted hard from 6' + in the air - I've slid on hard packed shale, rag dolled through boulders and been run over multiple times and destroyed chest protectors that otherwise would've been my body.

Your statement that "a normal mx style chest protector does not do a lot for impact" should be stated as an opinion, because it's just wrong!

I'm pretty sure my buddy Trevor was glad he was wearing a chest pro after getting run over from his "rootie to his tootie" as he said after the moto and walking away.

Seems you guys are all talk and no action,if you want to make everyone wear what YOU think they should then go out and petition to get a rule change. I will say it again, you can wear as much equipment as YOU want,no one is stopping YOU.

Maybe it's just me, but the hurricane didn't seem to be so restricted wearing extra protection. I also think Weimers back would have appreciated this kind of protection at High Point.

In your haste to throw your socialism blanket on this issue, maybe you should understand why it was even brought up. I can guarantee you nobody cares if lostboy gets run over and can't make the Colorado all star series race this weekend. You can compete in a speed skaters spandex for all I care and you won't be restricted in any way.

Pro motocross is a show no different than NFL football or cirque de soleil. If Payton Manning decides he doesn't want to use a helmet because he is no liberal and Obama can kiss his ass and then gets a brain injury in the first five minutes of training camp, well I would be pissed. If i had bought tickets to the first game of the season and 3 top players were missing for similar reasons I would be a little let down.

Now, do you get it?
