Personally, I "could" afford to have a new bike every year as well and used to buy new when I raced every year. I can see doing it if you stack up the hours on them.

Now I buy vintage and trick them out a little..... then go to the local tracks with a 15yo bike and stomp some dirt up the ass of most of the guys on the current year bikes and still keep pace with mid level A class.
Mid pack A riders in WI are hauling pretty good these days. What's the name of this vintage riding speedster? Maybe I know you.

I tend to agree with the guy asking the question. I see it quite often and have to shake my head. One of the local kids (19 years old) just sold all his moto stuff this year. He raced Juniors, but wasn't super fast. He said he just can't afford to ride anymore. Understandable, but done right, it's not that expensive. He had never ridden a bike more than two years old. Up here a new 450 goes for +$10,000. At that price, I wouldn't be able to afford riding either.

I don't think it matters how fast you are. If they want to spend the money, it's their choice.

A lot of the slower guys also don't know much about bike maintenance and after a year of moderate to heavy use their bike is in shambles. Some guys also don't have time to do anything but basic maintenance to keep a bike going through the year, and buying a new bike at the end of the year translates into more time riding and less time wrenching. I know some vet racers that do this, they do very minimal maintenance throughout the year and the bike needs a lot of attention when they're done with it, but they get their money's worth out of it for sure and a ton of riding time. Less riding days spent back at the garage, and when riding days are few and far between for some it's not that much of a stretch to see why they do it that way.

I like to get new bikes every 2-4 years but I'm fickle about setup and maintenance. I know if I bought a new bike every year and worried less about preserving it's condition to last a long time I would definitely get to ride more. I'm probably doing it wrong, but it works for me.

It is annoying when some spoiled little punk with poor work ethic pulls up in a half million dollar rig with the latest greatest of everything provided by the parents.

I'd say if you buy it yourself it's no problem. Vet's are allowed to be slow and look good! ha

I just started a great career and my wife and I are very blessed. My motto now is if I can't go fast I might as well look fast. And you're right, it's frustrating to see guys with new bikes who haven't worked a day in their life, but that's the world we live in and us fellas who have bought their own stuff (me on my own since 17 bike wise) are better people for it

What if you had a 9 year old who raced 65's and 85's, stock and mod. That's 4 bikes, if you practice on the race bikes. If the kid is a "racer", those bikes will be toast within a year. One new bike a year would be nice for that guy.

You're probably right, I've taken it too seriously. I don't mind anyone buying a new bike. I've bought several new bikes, and yes, it does contribute to the industry. I reacted to a few comments that were made with the wrong attitude IMO.
It's all good. I'm probably making something out of nothing.

I hate seeing all these guys on here saying "Because they want to", "Because it makes them happy", etc, because if you need to spend $10,000 a year on a bike to be happy, you either need some help, are spoiled rotten or are just plain stupid. I see more people (my self included) having fun on old, used, and beat bikes than I do on new bikes.

^^^ No offense man, but you seem delusional on this subject unless you are strictly taking about someone who rides 15 times or less a year for fun only and doesn't care about competing at all or how they finish when they do compete. I think the real root cause of this issue is serviceability. I don't want to make this a hate on 4 stroke party, but I would say the average guy can't service a 4 stroke motor. If that guy knows he's going to put 50-100 hours a year on a bike and can't afford to pay a shop to do the motor ($1-2500), then yeah, buying a new bike every year probably looks good.

When I was younger, I didn't have a lot of money so in order to keep myself competitive and expenses low I had to learn how to work on my own bikes and keep them feeling new by maintaining them. Even now, I'm in a good career and earning a high salary, I still feel MX is a very inexpensive sport because I MAKE it an inexpensive sport. I do all my own bike work, I scour Ebay and the internet for sale and closeout prices on parts, I don't deck my bikes out with bling and aesthetic mods....I just ride my 2-3 year old bikes that look brand new at a fraction of the cost and love it.

Agree man,a 250f road once a week in mostly sand,(where I live), is just about shagged after a year....and that's with typical maintenance!

If you want the latest and greatest stuff, you get a new bike every year. If you sell your still young bike off at the end of the year for a new one, you dont lose much money and you have a new bike again. Ive been doing it for years.

I purchased my first brand new bike in Feb 2012. I think I'll go new from now on but will wait until it's a major model upgrade to do it. My race bike is a 2012 CRF 450. The 15 looks tits. A new bike for me will come in 15 or 16. Not sure yet if I'll keep my 2012 as a practice bike or not. Selling it could score me all the upgrades I like though for nothing out of pocket. Bars, chain, suspension re-valve, graphics, seat cover, couple air filters, etc
only in a 4 stroke world.

That's exactly what puts a smile in my face with 06 KX250.... Except the keeping up with A class riders!

I just get a kick of running it in on the faster guys as they try to get their big four strokes slowed down and set up for the corner, I just slide underneath and pull the trigger!!!!

If people who didn't need it didn't buy a new bike every year and drop $1500 on parts they don't really need there would be no good 1-2 year old bikes to lowball the seller on. Here's to you "Guy who doesn't really need a new bike every year but does anyway".

Exactly, what is funny is some of these self righteous guys think they should tell others how to spend their money or what they do and do not need and the jealousy of someone who can afford a 500k setup or new bike every year. If you can afford it great if you cant then oh well.
