Reed's 4 Billion Offer Wins Clippers Bidding

TwoTwo Motorsport's has agreed to buy the Los Angeles Clippers for a record $4 billion as the close friend Jason Thomas pushed through the sale without gaining the approval of Vitalmx.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement that the June 3 meeting will remain as scheduled pending submission of necessary documents from Shelly Sterling.

“Commissioner (Adam) Silver has consistently said the preferred outcome to the Clippers proceeding would be a voluntary sale of the team,” he said.

Does that mean that figure over, or underestimates Chad's actual worth?

Reed came to the US in 02, if he had more than a mill in his pocket at that time I would be super surprised. To amass 60 mill in 12 years he would have to be pulling down ~5 year in contracts, bonuses, and investment profits since then.

To me, my guess is that 60 mill is on the generous side.
Even averaging 5 million for 12 years (way high), that's not accounting for taxes (40+%) and spending money on life (high overhead for athletes). It's just a silly number realistically.

Is it net worth or earnings?
I have a lot of very close lifelong friends and I do not know the net worth of one of them. I don't know what my parents or kids net worth is. Nobody on this board knows Chads net worth. I do know enough that with the right investments the 60 figure or more was attainable with the amount he earned over his career.

Don't give up man, I will explain it for them. Here is what I was told:

Chad loved his Apple computer and decided to save and invest about $1 million into Apple (stock symbol AAPL) in 2002 when the stock was at $30 in his rookie year in the U.S. He sold that stock in 2007 when it hit $200. After speaking with RV about how much RV loved his Ford Raptor, Chad had the foresight to roll that ($5.67 million after long-term capital gains tax) into Ford stock (stock symbol F) during the crash of 2008 when it hit $1 per share. Ford then made a spectacular recovery and the stock rose to $18 by January of 2011 when Reed sold it. After his capital gains tax (15% in 2008 and 2011) and brokerage fees, he ended up with a net amount of $86,724,054 which he invested in the Gabelli Equity Income Trust (stock symbol GAB ) which produces an income stream of right around 9% or $7,809,000 per year which he has used since 2011 for various projects, including the funding of 22 Motorsports.

Chad gave me permission to publish that information and JT$ will no doubt back it up.

Quite simply really...not sure what the confusion is about. Check the stock charts yourselves.

Also, apparently Ellie advised Chad to buy Netflix (NFLX) when it dipped in 2012 because she loved watching the series Breaking Bad there. NFLX, of course, then recovered to over $400/share and this is still something of a sore spot between them and an endless source of ribbing by Ellie. Chad can hardly even watch Netflix to this day, and mostly watches Amazon Prime-especially since Amazon Prime grabbed the series "24" from Netflix.
(Stock symbol "NLY") and (AGNC) both pay more than Gabelli Equity Income Trust. If its true (GACool is only paying 9%.
I own both and they do 10.12% and over 11% for me every year.
Just give this info to Chad Reed and he can invest more wisely.
Just my 2 cents.

It may be really high, anyway I do not care. I just post regarding investments, if you want to be:
super safe, that is 3%,
market, 5%
already risky, 8%
speculative, up to 20%
business owner/angel/poker type, can be 0, can be 100% year, can be more.

It all depends of the strategy, like at a poker table. For instance with a couple hundred thousands or $1M you can already consider you are safe if you live in rural areas, so if you want to make a lot then it is possible to have fun investing.

Reed made more money than Casey Stoner in the year that he won the Moro gp championship. And didn't he make a lot of money with a insurance policy taken with loydds on the championships he won on factory Suzuki.
Not saying he is worth 60$ mill but has certainly been a very smart cookie when it comes to handling the cash.

So, I can have it ready on Tuesday?
No.
WHY NOT?

OK, it will be ready on Tuesday.

Respectfully disagree sir. Most of Reed's money comes from his gator wrangling services.

On a serious note, apparently Reeds real estate deals in Australia include Home Depot leasing the land that every store is on from Reedy himself or the conpany that he has a very large stake in. I believe that when he says he races for fun, he actually means it.

In 2009, (which was probably the last year of the really fat factory contracts, not forgetting that Reed signed with Suzuki in mid 2008 right after his second title and prior to the GFC), it was being said at the time that Reed's contract was worth in the vicinity of $4-5m. On top of that he collected a couple of million (his words) from his Lloyd's "insurance policy" after winning the outdoor title. So let's say his MX income that year was $6m or so.

At the time he won the outdoor title Reed did an interview with someone (can't remember who, maybe Matthes?) where he said he made more money that year from his investments than he did from racing (again his words). So it's not unfeasible that his combined income that year was in excess of $12m.

As others have pointed out, especially in Australia with property and resources stocks, there were spectacular gains to be made between 2002 and 2009, exactly the period when Reed's income was at its peak.

Based on all that, a net worth of $60m is certainly possible, even believable.

And with all respect to JT$, I agree with the other posters who've said that personal wealth is one of the more closely guarded secrets people keep. Those who are genuinely wealthy often like to downplay their wealth, and those who aren't often like to make they're better off than they are.

I'm not sure what is more funny about this thread. People trying to convince one of Chad's buddy's and fellow racer that he is wrong or JT trying to convince some people on here that what they are reading is wrong.

JT I give you props for trying...I guess you are a glutton for punishment.

I remember that comment from Reedy. Considering that his investment base is more every year it would stand to reason that his income from his investments go up every year also.
