just got back into mnt biking after about 5years off...

have a 1.5year old boy and was up to 215lbs by not having time to exercise or eat right with a little baby..

ive done almost 100,000 verticle feet of climbing since May...down to 185lbs and I can now ride solid 20min motos with consistent laptimes..i stopped drinking soda too

if you have an iphone or android get this app:http://www.strava.com/ it tracks all your rides and gives you a count of how many calories you burned...then just eat less than you burned (including what you burn during day to day activities)

i found that app has really kept me motivated..you can also 'race' other peoples times so it keeps it fun and you can track your progress...

if you want a decent bike you will need at least 1400$ for a good used one...dont waste your money on a cheap bike...having a good bike will make you want to ride..you cant buy anything decent thats new for under 1500..you can buy something that was 5gs a few years ago for 16-1700$..
I love strava!

Dude, 800 calories a day is way too low. You're going to have serious issues doing that, shit energy, muscle loss, metabolic slowdown, the whole deal. You've got to eat at least 1800 a day if you're a grown man that's almost 6 feet tall. Congrats on the weight loss for sure, it will help with your riding in big ways, but if your body is breaking down because of diet coke, frozen meals, and serious nutrient depletion, you're going to be having other issues.

Just avoid processed shit, like the someone above said, only things that grow from the ground or had a face. Get a juicer and juice yourself veggies and fruits a few times a day. You'll have crazy energy and get good nutrients that way. Cook fish, veggies, tofu, beans, there's endless healthy shit you can make for yourself. Counting calories but getting grocery store food is a bad combo.
In his defense, Just as in my post earlier in this thread, I didn't mention my caloric intake(1000 calories a day) for my diet because I didn't want to hear the reaction rikhek just recieved. In my post I did mention that I went to a Nutritionist and told him my goals and my feelings and he gave me a plan and the foods I should eat. He did not give me a full meal plan, but rather a list of foods that I should eat on the 1000 calorie diet I was on. If your eat the right kinds of healthy food and plan accordingly, you can actually eat a good bit of food in a day, there was days were I was eating to get to my calories. The Nutritionist's quote to me was "I'm not going to put you on anything that is going to kill you, You may not be able to do it, But it won't kill you!!!"
Maybe the guy I went to was a motivational guy or something or just knew what the hell he was doing, cause I took that as a challenge when I heard the "you may not be able to do it part" but I went 43 days w/o going over 1,000 calories the first time. I have lost give or take a pound or so 95lbs since January, Now I felt like shit for the first 4-5 weeks, but once my body adjusted, I had enough energy to complete my daily morning workouts and work 10 days, 5 days a week !!! Now I feel like a million bucks !!! And every single time someone asked how I was losing so much weight, after my response was a diet and exercise, the next question was what diet? I always got a crazy look and questioned and usually was told I was crazy and that I was just starving myself, But after I explained that I was guided by a nutritionist and my daily intake it usually changed people's opinion quicky !

Hi all,

well I was 230 pounds six years back, had a few dirt bikes over four years and got to 211, then I started personal training, unfortunately due to work I've not raced this year, but I'm now down to 188pounds and can handle an hours solid kick boxing.

My diet is kind of Paleo, not real strict, I cut out the latte's ( espresso now ), eat way less for breakfast, I actually weighed the muesli for ages, minimal complex carbs ( bread /potatoes / rice ) and heaps of vegetables and alot less fruit.

Seems to work, the proof will be when I get home and can race again, but I'm in the best fitness of my life it feels like and I'm 46 and having a blast riding.

anything leaning towards a paleo diet tends to yield good results.

Well no timed practices to look forward to today so I was reassessing life today and remembered this thread. Finally taking action today, I'm getting my 34 hour restart in okc this weekend (truck driver) and found a local bike shop! Here is what I bought and I love it, going for my first ride later today... I feel like JH100 right now, I have had several chances to take my life seriously (health) and I keep fucking it off. This time I'm serious, taking a step in the right direction and I'm gonna stick with it this time... I better @ $1000

Thank you guys for all the inspiration. Honestly I thought Id be flamed alot for this subject, figured id get alot of one liner jokes about being a tubby etc etc.

Moto is my life through and through, one day Ill race

Utrider Ill check into that bike you mentioned, thanks again!
Im really, really not trying to be a dick here, but as mountain bikes go, I would have to say that 29er hardtail is not at all a wise choice for a 275 pound rider. In fact, it's probably the worst choice. For one thing, as a wheel gets bigger, it gets weaker and more flexible. Big guys have enough trouble already killing wheels without running big noodly ones. Secondly, geometry-wise, 29 hardtails are really designed for XC racing, meaning very light and not very stable pointed downhill. The average mountain biker these days is almost universally on a full suspension bike. If you're just getting into it, a 5" (or so) travel full suspension bike will be far easier to ride and more comfortable than a hardtail. It can be tough as a big guy getting the right bike setup, things are going to break and wear out faster than they would for an average size guy, that's just going to be a reality. Plan on blowing up rear shocks. My advice is to go heavier duty and not worry about weight so much, you're riding to get in shape, not race up the hill. You'll burn more calories on the way up, and have a lot more fun and be less likely to kill yourself on the way down. Specialized Enduros are a good go-to, but avoid the generation with Specialized house brand suspension (Enduro SL 07-09 I think), that shit was garbage. The stuff before and after that was all good. I've seen Specialized honor warranties and give out brand new frames on stuff from the 90s that came in broken, pretty awesome. There's lots of other good bikes out there, give an idea of price range and I can point you to some other clydesdale specials (not making a joke, that's actually a class in mountain bike racing!).

LOL, welp, I see I was a little late. That's why you should read to the end of the thread. As long as the terrain you're on isn't too gnarly, you should be fine. If you get into it and start going hard, you can always switch later. Us mountain bikers change bikes like underwear anyway. Keep those wheels true and tensioned religiously, it will save your pocketbook.

Never really been a fatty but I feel mx has kept my health in check my entire life. At 56 im finding it tougher every year to shed the winter weight though. So today I dusted off my over 20 year old Fat Chance Yo Eddy with manitou ones and did a 15 mile road ride. Needless to say I'm a POS but felt good to spin a little.
Congrats to all you big boys on the weight loss programs. Lots of good advice from all.
By the way, it really pisses me off when you fatties blow by me on the track!!

Congrats on the weight loss, like mentioned before quality foods in reasonable portions and exercise.
I lost 25 pound just by cutting out beer and riding my bicycle,I have always had a good diet.,the beer part is the hardest for me as I like riding the bike.

Found out I have Celiac disease a few years back which means I have an allergy towards wheat and barley. My intestines and stomach wall was pure ulcers and scar tissue. My body was rejecting all the nutrients from food and going into auto immune every time I ate. As a kid docs couldn't figure out why I was spinning every time I ate and I ended up living with it. Like most athletes I was living off of wheat bread and pastas which is like poison for someone with this disease. Feeling sick all the time basically had me eating very little over all and I weighed 180 at 6'2" since 9th grade until I found out about the allergy. I never drank sodas or ate candy much ever for 30 years but now I can put a 12 pack of sodas down and eat a bunch of snickers and Hershey bars. I have been know to not eat and just drink a gallon of milk a day instead. I am literally allergic to fast food and only eat all whole meats and vegetables for my main meals which is good but for two years I have also been the least active ever and zero riding. Rode minimum twice a week for 30 years before this time off after an injury. I am at 200 now and just feel really weak these days. All my friends always think of me as a really super fit guy but I feel weak and out of shape real bad right now. A new bike is on its way and I am hoping I can turn this around because I feel I lost that drive that I had for so long.

I decided I'd gotten too portly and out of shape when I head to pull over to let a friend by a couple laps into a a race. we race vintage) It was humiliating and I hated the day. ( I decided then and there that if I couldn't go 5 measly laps hard, then I shouldn't be on a track, but what to do?

I can't run much because I am old and my knees won't take it, especially downhills. Treadmills and such drive me insane

My driveway is about 40 yards long, and fairly steep. I started "sprinting" up (ok - ambling up), then walking down. Then turning around and doing it again. At first, 10 excursions would kill me.

After a while, I could do 3 sets of 10, then 10 sets of 10, then 50 straight actually sprinting. Back at the races, I found I found do 3 classes (just 6 motos 10 to 12 minutes each) with ease. I really enjoyed those days of racing.

The lesson for me was to find something to do I would continue to do, then do it. Doing anything is better than doing nothing.

I also dropped some pounds like the rest have suggested by eating good food frequently and in moderate portions.

I'm not one of these food Nazis but I've begun to pay attention to food safety and quality. Last Friday we went to see a new movie called "Fed Up" which is kind of a documentary on the food industry and the foods we commonly eat.

It sure sharpened my attention on food quality.

http://fedupmovie.com/#/page/home - watch the trailer if interested. I was glad my wife dragged me to the movie - a good watch

Great ideas in this thread. So I am looking for a little help. I need to loose at a minimum 25lbs and would prefer 35 lbs. as I have gotten older, I am finding it so difficult to loose the weight. Started the cardio stuff, now doing 30+ minutes a day. Probably my biggest problem is work gets me eating irregularly. Any suggestions?
Dubach still skinny?

When I was 18 I weighed in at almost 250 pounds. I had raced MX, played baseball, and ridden my bicycle almost everyday until I turned 16. Then I sold both to buy a car. That same summer I took a job at McDonald's to pay for gas and insurance. Over the next two years I gained almost 100 pounds. So I was sitting at almost 250, lazy, tired, and very unhappy. I hated looking in the mirror. Finally I decided to do something about it. I told myself if I got under 180 I would buy myself another dirt bike. It took my about 8 months but I finally lost the weight. I went and bought myself a supermoto (I know not quite what I had promised but more practical for that stage in my life). Six months later it was stolen from the parking lot of my apartment complex. It was devastating for me. I lost interest in working out and soon put almost all the weight back on.

Last year, weighing in at 235, I made a deal with myself again. I had to get back under 170 and then I could have another motorcycle. The catch was this time I had to keep it off for a few months first. I've made it back down to 179 as of this week and I'm striving for more. Mountain biking and trail running have become a passion of mine and I've even signed up for a mountain bike enduro race and an XTERRA du-athlon. I can't tell you how much fun mountain biking is. It almost feels like cheating. I get to ride all the time even though I haven't made it to my goal yet.

Get on that bike and ride your ass off. Have a great time. Focus on eating clean and the pounds will fall off.

Was a 160 pound racer from age 18 - 38. Then the familiar, work/family/marriage all put 50 pounds on me. I've knocked 15-20 of those pounds off a couple of times with cycling and swimming, but never changed the stress factors. So it always came back. Especially in fall/going into winter when it gets dark.

Two years ago I watched the Fat, Sick, Nearly Dead video and while swimming intensively with a local master swim team, did a juice fast. Not fruit juice but pond scum looking green juices. The transformation was immediate and borderline miraculous. Lost weight, blood chemistry went from need medications to completely normal. BP and HR went completely healthy. Like HR in the mid 40's. At age 58. So that was a wow experience.

Just recently read a book Finding Ultra by Rich Roll. Inspiring and I'm trying totally plant powered eating now. Because of the Rich Roll's book. More weight off. Energy up. I hope to be back at 160 or so this fall.

Ya'll are inspirations. Kicking butt when the entire world we live in is telling us it is ok to pack on a few hundred pounds.

i know youve heard it b4 but ,you didnt put it on overnight. so think long term.
if its white,it aint right.
you cant outwork a bad diet.i tried my fitness pal, until i had it down in my head.its surprising how fast it adds up.
try kale, fruit, smoothies.with ice and silk milk i love them.
water.plenty of it.
the biggest thing that helped me was i do it as soon as i get home. 5pm or 8pm whenever. no bs. yes some days its a fight, lol.
mix weights with cardio. if you can find insanity used buy it. do what you can then add a little each time.its good for rainy days and to mix it up. .i had acl reconstruct and a long cold winter on my azz.,fattened up nice and plump. i lost 30 lbs when i got serious with rehab. every 2 hrs have some protein.
i just ran a 5k in 26min not great @ all but the knee is stronger and lbs equals pain.
mx is for sure a motivator,30 minutes at a decent race pace i wouldve died a yr ago,no worries now.
kinda cheesy but i love this motto-----you can be sore tomorrow or sorry tomorrow. its up to you.

First off....congrats to every single one of you guys that used moto as a tool to lose weight!

Me personally....I have a hard time gaining weight. I have to keep up on my food intake because if I don't I shrink. I'd say the last 15-18yrs I have mostly become a " Non drinker ".....as i don't drink all that much beer and I try not to put any other poisons into my body. That includes fast food , drugs , basically anything bad for me. But eating right is only part of it.....you still need the exercise.....and moto is the best exercise I've ever found.

It works in a circle for me. I lift weights , spin bike , exercise my brains out not only because I love it.....but it helps me in the sport of moto. And then moto also helps me stay in shape. They work together.

Anyways.....not just ex-fatty's use moto to stay in shape.....us skinny guys use it as exercise as well.

Yes, your ass will be sore for a while. Cycling shorts do help some, but you do need to just build up to it. It looks like you put some smart additions on it, it will serve you well. The next thing you will want to look into is some different pedals, or maybe some toe cages for those. It is surprising how much you can feel the difference when you are lifting on your pedals, as well as pushing on the downstrokes.

Keep us posted on your progress, you will soon be cycling around for little errands, that you jumped in the car for in the past.

I am not a kinesiologist, but the best thing for me (41 year old, C level goon) has been jumping rope and calisthenics with a heart monitor on. It has been the most effective, the easiest to do, the cheapest, and I think it has the least risk for injury. I can do it anywhere. The weather is irrelevant. I can get to the heart rate zone I want to work on quickly and stay there easily.

Again, I am not a kinesiologist, a personal trainer, a doctor, etc. Here's my routine, but you should consult someone before you try this:

1. Set your heart monitor for your aerobic zone rate (consult a professional, google it, for the third time I am not a professional)

2. Warm up (consult, etc)

3. Count off 100 turns of rope - the counting is important, it keeps you paying attention. It seems like counting isn't a big deal during the first round, but it's not so easy after 50 minutes.

4. 40 bicycle situps

5. 10 body weight squats

6. step 3 again

7. 10 burpees

8. 20 lunges

9. step 3 again

10. 20 situps

11. 10 military pushups

12. repeat cycle

Any time your heart rate monitor starts screaming at you that you are beyond the aerobic max, finish the set and jog in place until you get back to the middle of your aerobic range, then start the next cycle. Set up a chart so you can tally each step as you complete it. You should move from step to step as fast as possible though.

This first time I did this routine in January it took me thirty minutes to get through one cycle. It was a total trainwreck. Now I'm doing ten cycles in 75 minutes every other day and I've doubled the turns in step 3. If you can't put in that kind of time, then half that is still good. I think five minutes beyond your local moto time is going to put you in a good position. My last hare scramble was a disaster, but it was entirely a riding ability / amped up to the moon problem - I felt great physically.

Jumping rope is a skill, but I think anyone can do it if they commit ten minutes a day to learning how to do it and have it down after a week. Any "speed" jump rope is going to work. They generally go for under $20. I don't suggest using a weighted rope.

Perhaps a professional trainer will tear this program a new ass for some reason, but it's been great for me. Only my riding needs work these days.

I'm in the process of transforming right now, I've ridden a motorcycle since I was 3 yrs old when I got a brand new 86 Honda Z50 for Christmas. I raced motocross for about 6 years from the age of 14 till 20. I have always been a big framed guy, I was about 5'9 & 170 in 8th grade. But through HS I stayed around 190-200 playing Baseball and racing, Granted I was never in great Racing shape, I could win a C class race pretty easy in a local class and run top 5 and pull out an occasional moto win in the Mega or Ultra Series. Anyways, Enough history, In January of this I was 325, on BP medicine and just feeling like shit, I've been Yo-Yo dieting for the past 10 years, I've lost 40 pounds here and there, but I always put it right back on. In February I told my wife I was going to get me a bike to ride and I was gonna change my life around. (She has never commented about my crazy weight issues, She has always just wanted me to be Healthy and HAPPY) I found a 2002 YZ 250 for $1500.00 Bucks that had the original tires on it and started riding. I also switched hours at my job (I have been a Sheriff's Deputy for 10 years and have been on rotating shifts, I got an office job with the dept. M-F 8-5) started going to gym every morning at 4am and went to a Nutritionist. As of today I weigh 220 lbs and have about 20 lbs to go to be at my goal weight. Tomorrow morning I'm gonna head up to Muddy Creek for the Mega Series Race and race my actual race in about 11 years !!!

The First Picture is me in January, The second is last week at FPT motocross in Columbus, NC
Just checking to see how your still doing with everything buddy. (PS I grew up in Holly Ridge/Jacksonville, NC area) Marine Corps brat, tons of tracks there unlike here in shitty OK. Anyways hopefully well, your story as well as many others on here inspired me to eat healthier and buy a MTB in the first place so thank you...

This thread is old and I know it went in a great direction after it started then simmered down without any progress reports like I felt I owed everyone giving me all this valuable advice. 11 days after buying this bicycle my life changed forever and not in a good way... I had just seriously started the rode to a better Kyle that could finally moto as he always wanted to all while still driving truck crossed country going to all the SX and MX events I could make it to, then this happened.

Crappiest day of my life...

The report saying I wasnt wearing a seat belt was bull shit btw and I had all the sites try to change it for legal reasons ( I was an owner operator truck driver) but by the time I was out of the hospital, papers and sites all over had already printed and said it was too late to reverse.

As you can see the bike and I were in much better condition when this thread was still hopping along. Im just thankful I made it out of this one alive, this head on crash kicked the shit out of every mx wreck ive ever had = A TON Smile

I just wanted to tell yall I had Spondylolisthesis of L4, L5, S1 which required fusion surgery and they removed some bone to allow more room for the sciatic nerve so I could feel my left leg again. Due to these injuries Im now greatly reduced on what I can do specifically bending. Riding is pure hell now, pretty much done with MX and can no longer make my living driving truck because I cant sit for more than an hour at a time. If anyone needs or wants any bikes rebuilt etc, ive done many and I think that I do good work. My buddy owns his own car hauling business and can haul bikes for me so if anyone needs something done to their bike and dont want to do it themselves (lack know how or time etc) Ill be very reasonable with them on price. Just realize I cant get around like I used to and it wont be like a 2 day flip turnaround on splitting cases on your KX450F etc. Ill need a little more time. Thanks Vital

PS still working on eating right, mostly juicing and plant based. Down to 258 and hoping for more but its tough not being able to move like I did a year ago. Just turned 29 last week and fuck, my mx days are done, I cant take the compression on the spine. Trust me, against Dr recommendations I tried it anyways. I live for this sport fat or not.

Bought the bike and some sweet new size 13 Gaerne SG-12 Boots that actually fit my big ass calves and felt great too. As well as the gear, all this was bought just 11 days prior. Talk about timing and misuse of $$$

After leaving the Moto industry I went into business for myself! Pic taken a few days before the wreck

Sadly the 20 year old boy on the other side of this hood didnt make it, RIP Tyler Alitz

As you can see my 2014 Ram 4500 turned into a pop can

As you can see my shiny new bike didn't like staying together at the rate of this collision

33,000 # D.O.T. rated ball snapped in half and the safety chain loops ripped away like butter

If you look at the steering wheel Im amazed I didn't break both arms, although I was wearing a seatbelt and my hands and head still made their way into the windshield.

Proof I was wearing a seat belt just like I always ride with a helmet (common sense)

Suprisingly the shittiest part of the day other than mentally dealing with the fact that I had been face to face with a guy at an accident like this and I was the only survivor was them taking all the glass out of my hands. Pics don't do it justice I can promise yall.

Lastly me today, alive and doing much better trolling my Vital family from time to time.

I honestly dont know what prompted me to read through my old thread posts, but this one struck a nerve and I felt entitled like I owed some of yall an explanation on why theres been little progress on the weight loss.

Happy 4th everyone, ride and drive safely!!!

PS send me your bikes, Im bored without working

Wow man you have been through alot, that car accident has scared you for life, that's OK though the scars of life make you who you are. Just stay positive and keep working on being healthy, I was a 240 pounder at the biggest ,iv hovered at 170 to 180 for the last 3 years,it's not easy but it's achievable. Best of luck to you in the the future!!

Thanks brother, Ill take your advice as iv'e been trying to do anyways and focus on the future and the positives in life ahead. Doctor calls it a severe case of post traumatic stress disorder, I disagree but I'm not a Dr. so... anyways I'm stoked for this Saturday and the fact that I just sent the Suspension on my 06' CRF450X off to get reworked by Factory Connection of Muskogee for Supermoto setup, Iv'e ridden bikes 23 years now and have never messed with suspension. I cant wait to feel the difference, especially on my back even tho its for a sumo setup. I just refuse to give up riding all together as long as I'm breathing I'm gonna twist a throttle. Full blown MX though, is out

Current inspiration is a pic of Malcolm's bike from I don't know when (for some reason I never seen this setup in a race... anyone know when he ran this bike?

Before pics

Current status - cant wait to complete her
