I feel im at no disadvantage power wise. Its different power than a 450 but different doesn't mean not as good. On nasty dry hardpack its still a little bit of a handfull but if there's any traction at all I can easily outpull them. It rewards agressiveness and but still lets me be very lazy by normal two stroke standards.

Here is a shot of my 2006 that I bought off a member of this website. I have it for sale but I think that I'm fixing to just hang on to it. Just sold my YZ450 so I have some cash to fix up the RM really nice.

Here's my 05 I bought this winter and stripped down did everything about to it.

It's sweet thinking about doing something to motor either port job or big bore I'm bigger guy
And still ride A / pro class I just want little more torque and pull.

i've had rm 250s every year for since 2000!!! great bikes

- best year is 2006 so if you can find a real low hours 2006 then get it! the 06 has slightly more bottom end power than the later models (i think the carb intake boot is a different angle and slightly different porting to the later models) any of them 04 onwards you cant go wrong with though. currently have a couple of 2010 (k8) ones in the garage. Selling one of them for a new 450 though!

they come jetted very rich on the main as stock (as most bikes do nowadays) - as far as pipes etc stock is very good and probably the best set up for most people. I run mine with either the stock or fmf fatty front pipe and pro circuit r 304 silence, v-force reed block. Boyeson rad valves work really well too. Instead of the stock gearing (13-50) we go to 13-51.

alot of slower riders actually want to tame the power down from stock and go with reed spacers/ flywheel weights, i found that these tend to deaden the power too much (make it feel flat) and preferred the stock set up with minor mods like light porting work/ pipes etc.

- 3rd and 4th drive gear and 5th driven tend to wear out on the dogs about every 60 hours running time (on average)Theres a shim washer and circlip on the back of 3rd drive gear thats a little too thin and allows 3rd to 'float' a little too much. We add a thicker shim washer there, and also a more heavy duty circlip- the stock circlip can concave (or pop off all together) if you stomp on the gear lever too hard, allowing the gear to move where it shouldnt. This will make your gearbox last alot longer!
Also, when you check your clutch you might want to check the gear selector pin as we have had these work loose after a few hours- we normally remove them and loctite them when we get the bikes, same with the screws on the selector barrel.

They really are great bikes, handle like nothing else! we tend to set ours with the sag set so the back end is real low- i feel that this helps in the corners.
Do you have part numbers, for the washer and clip that you're speaking of? My 04 RM 250 has started to jump out of third.

Thank you in advance.

Here is my 05. I really like this bike. I bought it just over a year ago its a work in progress.
Handles really well can be a little twitchy in high speed rough conditions but dropping the forks down will tame that.

Power wise not the same as a 450 but a lot more fun

Hi Guys

I am looking at buying a Hinson billet clutch basket for my RM250..

Question: Does anyone know if you can fit a standard pressure plate and internals on the Hinson basket?

Cheers 2 stroke brothers
May you Braaaap with crispness eternally and not let the lazy, expensive, heavy 4stroke man hold you down.

I owned Shane bess's 2006 RM250 and it was the best 250 I have ever had. I just got rid of the 06YZ250 in my profile pic and picked up a clean 05 RM250 in Nebraska. I am in the process of the build. The yz and rm motor are very similar. Get a flywheel weight to tame the hit and help with traction..

nice looking bike. I'm a big fan of the trimmed side panels.
I did mine as well but they're a bit different.
How you like that Scalvini pipe? That's definitely on my "to buy" list.

Anyone using a FWW in the sand on their RM? I have a BPM built engine with pro circuit pipe and silencer with vforce reeds. I have a heavier FWW I think it was 12.5 when I weighed it. I tried it once when I was up north and it did give the bike more traction but I thought it slowed it down some which was fine for a hardpack track but under loamy or sandy conditions Id like all the power I can get.

Maybe try a 6oz.
Did you read the previous pages lol? Not being an ass but lots of good info about your ? in this thread. Dowd owned sand and he ran heavier fww. I'm kinda with you i have a 6 oz but havn't been able to really test it.

Yeah I read the previous posts but didn't really see anything about sand. Its possible I over looked it though, and if I did I apologize but I am by no means Dowd and I can't ride at his ability level. I'm sure the better you are at keeping your momentum in the sand the less it would effect you having the heavier FWW . But for those of us who can't keep our speed through the turns like Dowd it might not be beneficial to add the weight in the sand. Iv read other general topics on FWWs in the sand and the consensus was don't use them you want to keep the wheel spinning. So I was more curious about the RM in specific since the FW is much lighter to begin with.

Runs extremely well loads of power and its not a ticking time bomb. I really like it in the sand, but if I'm riding hard pack I'll still take a 450 anyday. But I don't think there is a better two stroke 250 then these late model RMs.

have you priced a new cylinder from an RM 250? its $775. good thing you can replate...but I have seen many busted up cylinders that cant be replated. and if it was my bike, I wouldn't run a heavy flywheel weight. Those RMs had a really trick asymmetrically balanced crank from the factory. It helped the RM hook up. but with any mod or part in question, the only good way to know is to try it for yourself. if you don't like it, sell it on e bay or something

Yeah that is always an option as well. Bike runs great as is so there is no real reason to mess with it, but more traction is always nice so I was just curious.

Speaking of flywheel weights. I just did the motor on my 13 KTM250SX (lowering the & cleaning up the cylinder & doing the head & powervalve & boring the carb) & the guy who did most of the work was at my house this morning getting some thinner base gaskets so he could lower the cylinder on a friends of ours new 13 250SX too & I was telling him about this topic & he said to take a look at the size of the flywheel weight that comes stock on my bike. He said it appears to easily be around 20-25oz.
malachi177 wrote:
Your '13 comes stock with a flywheel weight of about 20-25 ozBlink .....now that's cool. A manufacturer that is catching on, I like that.
This cracks me up. It's the same as the guys that say "I want to get offset triple clamps."

All bikes have offset triple clamps stock. What they really mean is they want a different offset than stock.

All bikes have a flywheel weight stock. When people say they put on a 9oz flywheel weight, that means they added 9oz of weight to the weight of stock flywheel. This is where people get confused. Whn talking total weight or the amount of additional weight.

Hey fellas i'm really interested in the RM250, I want to go back to the two stroke. In your opinions and experience what year(s) do you feel were the best for the RM250 and why? Any input from you guys would be such a help, thanks.
A few pics of my '06 RC RM250, had ReconMX make up a graphic kit cause couldn't find one I liked, tons of fun but it's going up for sale this week, back on the four strokes cause I'm getting old and lazy!

That's a bummer you're getting rid of it. 'm kind of in the same boat , and am thinking of selling mine , but it's mainly for extra room in my shop. I hope to get a 2016 YZ 250 2 stroke this spring / summer sometime and it'll be cramped in my garage if I keep the RM. BUT....I'm holding onto her for now , as I may regret selling it. Won't hurt to have two bikes , just wish I had more space.

Side note : I went back to the 2 strokes because the 450's seemed to of made me lazy , and I wanted something a little more challenging to ride. It seemed I spent more energy trying to hold onto the 450 , where as the 2 stroke I can kind of muscle it around for longer periods of time without getting as tired. Besides that.....it was nice getting back to something I obviously missed. This past summer on my RM , I had some of the most fun riding , I can't see myself ever getting another 450.

Same reason I got the 2 stroke, and for cheap rebuilds then I started hitting some tracks out in CA and realized the torque is needed, the way people ride in lines makes it tough on the 2 stroke also but I agree the sound, smell and fun is on the 250, got a new RM 450 and love it. Need to make some room also for the old guy 500 Husky dual sport I may try and pick up but they are a bit pricey!

I hear ya. The RM450 is going to be a great bike no matter what. I kept my Kawi 450 for a good year after I bought the RM 250 and tried going back and forth between the two , and just couldn't do it. For me , it's gotta be all 2 strokes , or all 4 strokes. Swapping back and forth was screwing with me out on the track. Just ride which ever one makes you happy. Who knows , you may try the 2 stroke thing again one day.

keep it and fix it up. you just buying a warmed over 06 yz anyways and the handling will never be there and you'll kick yourself in the ass. ive had both and the yz never handled as well as the RM. motors and suspension were evenly matched but the RM turned so much better
