I remember when Jim Pomeroy and Jimmy Ellis came to my local track, not sure the year,75 or 76. I associate year to the bike I rode and was still on the 73 360.

But,it was a big race at a new track,at that time there were 5 tracks in my county with a power struggle going on. This track owner was a big man in town, owned a mobile home dealership and the track was originally to be a trailer park back in a holler. The guy had dug all these terraces into the hillside but the county turned him down,so a mx club was formed.

A national had run at the buttermilk churn below Knoxville the week before and the owner paid start money for these guys. We roll in and all these people are gathered around 2 vans. I stroll over and there sits Jim's bultaco and Jimmy's can-am.

You young guys can't imagine what conditions were like back then, the dust was so thick from 4th or 5th on back you didn't see a bike length ahead.tie a bandanna over your face, oil the goggle vent and cough for a week. The terraces were always singled but during the 1st moto those 2 started jumping over the last one to flat,it was amazing to see a 50 ft gap that stepped up 12ft cleared.

I never jumped it ,there was no way my old bike could get the speed, but these 2 went at it.

Epic day.

I remember seeing Tony D pitting out of his hotel Dodge at Baymare Cycle Park and winning on his CZ.

I remember seeing Gary Jones dominate on Hondas and Can Ams in So Ca.

I remember my Dad seeing Donnie Hansen in the Novice class (Valley Cycle Park/ Muntz) on a Maico and brought him a jersey with our shop and his name the next weekend. He moved to expert that week.... the rest is history.

I remember my little bro racing mini expert against Jeff Ward. (Valley Cycle/ Muntz)

I remember racing 500 Int class (Maico) at the LA Coliseum on Amateur day. Made the main but poor start got around 9th.

I remember seeing Bob Hannah show up at Valley in a Suzuki box van and race two pro classes and play with my local hero, Kenny Zahrt. No surprise to me when he signed with Yamaha and dominated. No disrespect to Kenny, he was a hero to me too.

I remember seeing Broc Glover in the Novice class at Indian Dunes.

I remember dressing in my garage (Camarillo, CA) and riding my Maico down to the local river bottom secret practice spot. Johnny O was there riding a Honda 125 with a mechanic and his box van. He lapped me every 4 or 5 laps!

I remember being in practice at Mammoth and thinking I was hauling and being passed on the outside by a Honda with some dude named Stanton roosting me!

Sorry to ramble, memories keep coming and I'm blessed to grow up at the right time.

They said for the last two weeks that he suffered and cried

I'm way too young to know those lyrics, but I do.

Cycle news came every Wednesday, and it was the most up to date moto info available

Watching the Superbikers at Carlsbad on Wide World of Sports, while eating a TV dinner on a TV tray

Blendzall, has anything smelled better since ?

Waffle grips, green weenie air filters, and slobber stopper foam gas cap rings

Doug Henry's 1st ride on the YZ400 in Vegas. I remember he smoked the field, his bike sounded like a wet fart, and I wanted one

I remember when the CR125 first hit the track and everyone started laying down the rear shocks and bending the frames.
I remember using my compression release instead of brakes coming into the go fast turn left scramble tracks.
I remember carbs being mounted solid to the down tube of the frames on Tri/BSA flat trackers.
I remember becoming very good at changing crank seals on my ol Bultaco.

Lots of memories, but my fave is remembering watching Johnny O. win the 125 expert class at Sprocket's Park on a RM125B and then the final race of the night was him against the winner of the 250 expert class and the open expert. Johnny waxed them both by at least half a lap.

Waiting for cycle news delivery to have ammo to debate who was the best racer with my school buddies. At the time Ward, RJ, Glover, Barnett, Lechien....

Racing at Carlsbad

When "big" races gave out stuff when you won. tires, grips, gift certificates....

When there was only a 125 / 250 Beginner Novice Amateur Pro class. You may have had a stock and modified but none of this 12-15, 14-16, collegeboy, schoolboy ............

Concur with waiting for the spy photos of new bikes or seeing how trick the factory bikes were. Now everything looks the same.

Awesome,

I remember when I was in the first practice at Unadilla AM day, track was still covered with grass and I was on my YZ 125. I was on top of the world.

I remember when nobody ever used the term "flow" to describe a motocross track.

I remember when the ticket price to get into the 1981 MX Race at Saddleback was $6.00 and I was 13. But my older brother used my ticket money to buy a case of beer and made me hide under the couch in our 72 chevy shorty van at the entrance.

I remember standing outside the Yamaha pit after an Inter-AM and wondering when they were going to yell at the pudgy kid for leaning on the first YZ I ever saw when I realized it was Marty Tripes.
