Heck! I remember when my local dealer started carrying Cycle News. I thought it was amazing to find out the race results less than a week after the event! Before that, it was at least a month wait for the new issues of Dirt Bike and MXA to find out race results. Now we throw a fit if we don't have live TV coverage!

Oh I remember well.

I lived a mere 5 miles from the Cycle News offices on Signal Hill in Long Beach, (way before they moved to Costa Mesa) and I wouldn't recieve my news paper till Friday (on a good week) sometimes on Saturday.

The local motorcycle dealerships would have them displayed on Wednesday! Boy did that piss me off.

I love the internet.

I used to ride down to the dealer every week chomping at the bit to get the newest issue. I also remember around 1990 the ama used to have a toll hotline you could call for race results the next day. You would have to call and call until you got through and they would reel the names off so fast you struggled to get them down without missing one. Yea, it's just a bit nicer now.

I followed other parts of the sport like Trials and Road racing a lot closer when the CN paper was around, cause I read it cover to cover.
Remember the "We don't care how they do it in CA t-shirts, ect."

Back in the '80s I had a shop across the street from the post office.
Postmaster was a street rider.
Sometimes our Cycle World would be late and we joked he was reading it.
One time it showed up late with a coffee ring on one of the pages.

Also does anyone else remember that the dealer could rip off half the cover and send back to show inventory that had not sold? My dealer would then sell those for 1/2 price so my dad would always buy a week late to get the 1/2 price deal Smile

Ya me to, i followed other disciplines a little closer. I still read their online stuff but its not the same. I loved reading about the desert racing and some of the bigger local races throughout the country. I hated getting mine sometimes it looked like it had been run through a shredder a few times ha.

For a few years in the early 80's I lived just a few blocks from Cycle News. The newsracks outside would have the new issue on Tuesday mornings (most shops didn't get 'em until Thursday or Friday) AND if you went inside the office on Monday afternoon you could sometimes get the new issue then...sometimes. The receptionist got to know me and would give me a thumbs up or thumbs down when she saw me entering the building.

Thing was, even if you were only into moto, it covered everything.
I know it made me a much more well rounded motorcyclist.
After you read the article on Saddleback, or Namur, for the 4th time, there was still a paper full of
Roadracing, World Trials, Dirttrack, Speedway, hell it even had ice racing from Siberia.

Nowadays, it's a much more fractured industry imo.
Dirt guys don't know, or give a hoot what's happening in Drag Racing.
Same with the street guys in general, they have no clue who RV is.

It's like we're all living in little tribes, holding anything out of our little sphere with distain, and even a bit of contempt.

Yea, the inn er net. Making the world a better place, one tribe at a time.

Oh gawd.....that brings back memories! Got in trouble with my mom because I had a habit of calling them for race results! I remember being on the phone for like around a few minutes at a time , and mom kepts seeing these 10-$15.00 charges on the phone bill.....which back then was almost doubling the phone bill! Man she was pissed! I had to split a bunch of fire wood for a damn 2 minute call!

You know what though.....I haven't picked up a cycle news in quite a few years , but I always enjoyed cruising through all the local NW race coverage. Actually.....all the local race coverage across the country , looking for big name dudes that showed up at local races. That mag was the heart and soul of MX coverage and I'd read those things from cover to cover!

In the early days of Honda of Troy Racing I would get my CN usually on Wednesdays or Thursdays at the latest since I was living in Hermosa Beach. I would cut out the race reports and fax them to Phil Alderton back in Dayton. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago.

From time to time CN wouldn't show up until Monday and I would not be a happy camper about it. I loved getting home after traveling during the week on Friday nights and sitting down with CN and reading about our great sport.

If you aren't reading the online version of CN these days you are missing out on great coverage. It took me awhile to get in the groove but now I'm hooked on CN online.

Haven't read a paper Cycle News since they discontinued my complimentary subscription, but by then the internet provided me with fast results.

It was always fun to find photos and write-ups of yourself in the local race results.

Had several stories and photos published from local races in there.

In the later years got press passes from them and had several photos published from the Ponca City, some of he Nationals, and Supercross races.

Was really pumped when I got the full page cover photo from the Oklahoma City Supercross race.

Didn't pay much, missed a lot of the action by looking through a lens, but good times. Would have been a lot cheaper with digital technology, that damn film got expensive.

Seeing your name (mine we too few and far between) in the results was a special deal! I worked at a Honda shop and remember waiting for the mail every Wednesday to check out the latest and greatest racing news.
