The MTB vs Road BIke thread got me thinking, I have been an avid MTBer for years now. I just started racing BMX and I was wondering if any other Vital members raced BMX. I have been having a blast doing it, and I'm looking forward to getting me daughter into the strider races next season.
I raced back in 1999-2001 , traveled all over the USA racing Nationals and lots of local stuff 3-4 races a week.
Took home NAG 5 in 36-40 Cruiser in 2000 I won 6 Nationals

"Rider with the best attitude" award, OK-01 district (I was too stoked racing and jumping to throw my helmet when I lost).
I remember I showed up at my first race, which was a national qualifier with front suspension on a Dyno Nitro (this was a few years after that trend was in full force). I heard people working the gate laughing at my suspension fork and I thought to myself, "Well, at least my buddy Joe (who was on the line with me) has one too. I glanced over and noticed that his father, who was a bike shop mechanic had swapped his fork out with a rigid. Having suspension helped a lot that day. I was catching solid air off the rollers, casing the biggest doubles out there, and jumping into some small one foot rollers like they were a set of whoops. I ended up getting 3rd that day and was hooked hardcore for a few years, before transitioning into all the freestyle stuff. I apologize to anyone who wasted several minutes of their life reading this post. It's nice to reflect.
It's been almost ten years since I have ridden a bmx track. I need to get up to OKC one of these weekends.
Sorry to give you bad thoughts, I just wanted to share this story. Racing bmx for those couple of years was one of the best times of my life. The community was awesome just like in mx, and I made a ton of friends and had a heck of a lot of fun. I stopped racing after my crash, but I still do freestyle stuff all the time, mostly dirt jumps. You will have a lot of fun doing it, good choice in giving it a try. In some ways it can be crazier and more challenging than moto!
David's family owned the long-gone Rabbit Run MX here in Texas back when it hosted the '76 and '77 Trans-AMA stops. They also held BMX meets out there. I think his kid is one of the current top BMX guns, too.

I won the ROC #1 plate in 1993. I was on a local team that had a ton of riders. I remember thinking when I was a kid that this guy had to to be loaded to provide bikes and gear for all of us kids, looking back at it now I wonder how he managed it as he just worked at a gas station. After winning the ROC #1 plate I was invited to be on the Lowey Axles team the following year. I thought I was a big shot then but it was really a step backwards. I went from having free gear, shoes, bikes etc. to having to buy my own bikes and getting a bill for my gear. Factory my ass lol.
BMX is a great wholesome family sport and keeps kids ultra fit.

My first real BMX bike was a Torker, followed by a Mongoose, a few PK Rippers, and a Pro Neck.
I worked my way up to B Pro and won Nationals at that level, but a reoccurring collarbone injury helped me get into the editorial side of things at BMX Action magazine.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. We also had the "World Championship" in Indianapolis. It was downtown inside the convention center. Concrete floor and wooden ramps.
Then, it started to fade out. And cars and chicks were more interesting. hehe. About the time I turned 38, I met this guy who just happened to have a '99 KX250. Couple months later, I had a '99 KX250. The rest is history. Better late, than never, right ?
