Lost art? Safety Wire. Anyone use still use it?

With Blue and red loctite and aircraft locking nuts it very well may be a lost art. I still have a safety wire tool and several rolls of different wire. Still use it on my grips.

Most top flight mechanics I am sure use it.

It's compulsory on brake caliper bolts in roadracing.

I use it on grips and every bolt on the brake system on my micro sprint car.

Besides that some racing associations require it on places like brakes and drain plugs, I still use it on exhausts grips and even bolts on the bike, why because I don't want to have my bikes DNF for any reason. You could ask Cliff Lett about how he lot the CMC 125 #1 plate in one of the last Moto's he got ran into and the exhaust springs got knocked off and the pipe pulled out of the cylinder causing him to dnf.

as a former US Navy avionics mechanic I can assure that the art is not lost. Just not super critical on dirt bikes, I mean come on, like a factory bike rear sprocket is coming loose in one moto.
Grips only for me.
As others mentioned though in SM and RR it is required.

Always on the grips. Have had to use it to stitch airboxes and fenders back together after a yard sale.

Yes on my grips. And assured when we assemble 25,000+ hp turbo compressors it is used.

I always did my grips, but never found any legit reason to safety wire anything else on my bike. I also was not racing for $$$, and if that was the case it makes all the sense in the world.

It's not particularly necessary, but I did do this on my mountain bike..Shimano supplies pre-drilled bolts and a piece of wire, so I figured why not?

No way is it a lost art. For many industries Loctite will never be enough. I only use it on my grips for MX but at work we use it fairly often.

If you ride ktm in the woods, and don't safety your brake pad clips, it is only a matter of time til your pads drop out and you lose your brakes.
