If 2 strokes are so much fun then why doesnt everyone go back to riding them. I keep hearing in more and more videos and interviews now, the rider will talk about how much fun riding 2 strokes are and theyre more fun to ride then 4 strokes but to be competitive they have to ride the 4 stroke. Obviously its easier said than done but why dont they just go back to 2 strokes? why did they phase them out anyway? For example I watched a Justin Barcia interview like a week ago and he says he still has a 2 stroke and rides it all the time
"2 strokes are more fun to ride then 4 strokes but to be competitive they have to ride the 4 stroke."
Not too many people can afford a race bike and a play bike.
Its easier to go fast and easier/less tiring to go fast longer on the four stroke .
So seems a lot if people that like riding two strokes still choose to race the four stroke.
Perhaps if there were more two stroke only classes ..
I guess I'm saying a lot of people want to race them, but not against four strokes IMO
If that makes sence

I personally have a smoker, but if I had mega bucks I would probably have at least one stroker too.
these guys are 100% top of game, they can probably go just about as fast on a 250, but for what? to prove a point? they want money and status in the moto world, and if they can get 0.5% advantage in any legal way shape or form they're gonna take it. the pro's dont care what they're riding so long as its the absolute most advantageous equipment they can get their hands on.
if villopoto turned a 2 minute lap time on his 450, and a 2 minute lap time on a 250 2 stroke....he'd still take the 450 each time.
I can honestly say I have had the best finishes of my life on my CR250. At one race I was at, the podium was KTM 250SX, KX450, and CR250 ( me ) - the only two 2 smokers in the class were Top 3!!
And the friend I'm talking about is fast and was winning while on a 250; smoker time and time again . But says it was a lot of work .. and now the same guy is on a 450 and still winning now but by farther and not even out of breath after a race ..
In my class the bike is only a small part of the equation.
If I win or lose, it's not because of the bike.
When I'm riding my 125 as fast as it'll go, I'll get a pipe for it. Then a 139 kit. then I'll get a 250 2 stroke.
I expect to win. No excuses if I don't.
If that's riding with PED (Performance Enhancing Displacement) bikes then so be it, but not for me
sway the public opinion to the lead sled.
kinda remarkable they've come back as much as they have.
take away the cheater rule, run them cc to cc, 2's rule again.
Pit Row
This is why I ride a 2002 CR250R, because I do not race. I am a weekend warrior and I don't want to pay the ridiculous maintenance costs of a 4-stroke. Plus it sounds badass when I am hauling down a sandy straight at Oak Hill to hit a tabletop in 3rd gear.
And James stewart proved it could be done winning everything on his kx125 ..
But even he said winning got easier on the 250f ..
So the prob isn't either bike really imo its just that they shouldn't be raced against each other .
If they where all on two strokes the results would most likely be the same
Ask them the same for a 250 two stroke. Now rebuild both blown up motors. If you dont get it your just not looking at the facts. Easy to spend 15 grand on an f. Hard to spend 4 grand on a premixer. Especially at the top level. Racing a two stroke at the pro privateer level is cheaper. Still expensive! But cheaper none the less.
regarding the question of why is it so expensive to maintain, i assume labor is a big reason... not very many people want to rip into a top end on a stroker, i did my own and was terrified the entire time. not to mention rebuilding a 250f compared to a 250 is a huge difference in cost. i seized my 250f twice and paid more to fix it than what i bought it for brand new.
to me, i don't give a flying fuck what people want to ride and or race. but i do think that equal displacement would really open a lot of peoples eyes to the handicap given to the 4-strokes.
same goes for all the top guys, poto could win on a kx250 right now
