1981 Kansas City Supercross in Arrowhead staduim. I was 17. Barnett won, the only other thing I really remember is the announcer going on about the Can Am Jimmy Holly was riding.

1986 Sun Devil Stadium. RJ won the title!!!
The track was an exact replica of the field we used to ride around on behind the liquor store, when we were younger....Laughing

'91 Citrus Bowl, Orlando, FL.

I was 6 or 7 and don't remember much, but I knew I liked Mike Kiedrowski (because he was on a green bike) and hated JMB (because he is French and beating "our guys").

This is my little nephew, who got his 1st SX experience this weekend in Oakland. Amazingly, Oak was not only my 1st SX, but i was also his exact same age!! (the epic '79 Paddle Tire Debacle, i was 9yrs old, and was hoarse for 3 days from screaming for Hannah to pass Weinert) So very cool in so many ways Cool

So, what was your 1st SX experience, where and what age?

Me, too.

Small world.

I think Burgett was racing out of a Bus-Motorhome conversion that was waaaaay ahead of it's time, too.

'74 or so? I would have been 13, and rode an RTD bus from Riverside to downtown L.A. for the Superbowl of Motocross. Walking through the tunnel and seeing the Coliseum grass with the track surrounding it was way cool.

No more mudholes these days (unless it rains). Seeing some of the early Euro heroes out there was pretty cool, too.
Me too GuyB! I was 10? Were trucks involved too? I remember seeing "Young Ted" racing his truck.

San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium 1980. Race was in October.

Mike "Too tall" Bell won, remember Chuck Sun giving him a race. Hannah went down early but charged back through field from last to 4th? A very young Ricky Johnson Yamaha with neck bandanna was charging hard.
Watched it from up in the god's seats.

I'd been in Socal for 2 weeks, hooked up with record producer John Tartaglia @ Saddleback the previous weekend. he was riding in amateurs the following day. Sorted out his Whelsmith Maico so he paid my expenses hotel to go with him down to San Diego. Watching amateurs ride & crash on a tamed down track was an eye opener!

1994. My 1st yr. Pro. Iwas 16. Orlando Citrus Bowl. I qualified for the 125cc night show but didn't make the main. This was the same night that McGrath pulled the nac nac. He did it with two laps to go and at first look we thought he was falling in mid air. Then last lap he did it again and we were in awwww. Remember it like yesterday. Next issues of all mags stated nac nac, who's there everywhere. Hense the birth of "freestyle" as far as I'm concerned.

It was the birth, no doubt. All you had before that was a Ricky Johnson one-hander, or a Magoo pancake.

My first experience was when Stingray won Tampa the week prior. Or was it Tampa-Daytona-Orlando?

Either way, it's STILL the single biggest tragedy in MX/SX that Florida only has Daytona. Period.

I was 13 I think in 77? It was ATL and freezing, Marty Tripes won. My Dad brought a Coleman kerosene heater in the stadium, it went out and when he lit it again the flames went up about 2 or 3 feet. Security didn't like that too much. The announcer was crazy, saying like "the young gladiators flying their steel steeds through the cold night air!" Johnny Borders was there but didn't qualify for the main, that was a wake up call because I thought he was the fastest man to ever ride a dirt bike.

Atlanta 97' I think I was 10-11 ... Best memory of my childhood growing up. I had to go through school with C+ or better... I missed it by 1 class but my mom was cool enough to take me anyways. Drove all night to get there and it was soooo fun, I knew then what my passion in life was going to be.

I guess i was spoiled after all growing up

Tripes rode for Harley one year.

There are some errors in the vault. It says the '83 and '84 SX in Dallas were at Texas Stadium, but I'm pretty sure they were at the Cotton Bowl.

1987 Anaheim. I was 30. The old stadium and it was sold out at 70,000. That was the year RJ crashed at the start over a easy looking jump and got knocked out. He laid on the track motionless for a long time. Finally he woke up and slowly walked off the track. They had to start the race again and Wardy won. RJ didn't race. That might be why Wardy won the title that year.

They had a triple in the middle that only a few were doing. It had the steepest face and a very sktechy short landing area. I remember in practice Micky Dymond on the factory Honda aired it out first over that jump. It was the highest I had every seen anybody jump before. Wardy, RJ and Glover jumped it and I think that was all. I have some old pictures of that jump that still to this day seem unbelieveable. Wish I had them scanned so I could show everybody. Oh well......

Los Angeles Coliseum 1972, went with 2 other friends and sat above the mud puddle....great time.....
I went to the the first Supercross in '72 as well.

If I remember correctly, Tripes printed his name on his jersey with magic marker. I did the same after seeing that on my light yellow cotton Husqvarna jersey. Still have it.

Also got an autograph from Lars Larsson on one of his business cards. Still have that too! It's kinda funny that after all these years later he ran me into a hay bale at a REM race (LOL). They were running the 60 class with the 50 intermediates. He still brings it and is a cool dude and a stud!

If I remember right, I think we were on the same side of the Coliseum just left of the mud hole.

We've come a long way from that first Supercross!

Atlanta '89, I was 22 at the time. I remember my buddies and I drove down from Athens Ohio for the race. We made the "Doug Dubach 16, Holeshot Hotshot" banner you can see haninging behind the starting line before the main event. What was even cooler was we met Dougs mechanic later and he told us Doug was pumped to see that banner. That was also the race where Stanton finally beat RJ and the next weekend, RJ got his wrist broken. Boy, the memories really start flooding back.

San Diego in 1985. Johnny O'Mara won. It was one week before my own first race at Barona Oaks and I was pumped!

I would call the 1977 Atlanta Supercross my first supercross. Even though I had raced a few Daytona's before. I just do not think Daytona is a supercross. In 1977 I received a Yamaha support ride. I broke the bike in on press day at the stadium. I think I was in the first qualifier. Got a great start third and finished fourth. I went straight to the main. I was so pumped up for the main that I looped it straight out on the start. I still think I did not come out of the first turn last but on the second lap I stuck the brake paddle in a rut and broke it off. Finished 21st bummmmmer

Seattle 1996. Didn't even watch it on TV before that. I was 14. Don't remember any pits (were there any back then?).

Damon Huffman and McGrath battled until the end. It was awesome and I was hooked. I think I still have the program somewhere in my closet.
