I don't have a blast cabinet big enough to store the frame. My plan is to take it to a local 18-wheeler truck wash where they said they have an acid based wash solvent they will clean the frame for me with (he said they use it to brighten up all the aluminum truck trailers). For the $10 he said and the 10-15 minutes he said it would take...I'm in Smile .

The brightener is muriatic acid. Napa sells it in a spray bottle, called truck wash or trailer wash...something like that. Wear gloves.

I can confirm this. Used to work at a trucking company, and they had one of these. You wouldnt believe how clean the trailers would look after I cleaned them off with the acid solvent.

Was able to do some work on the bike over the past couple nights:

Start with the only bad thing I came across while inspecting/cleaning the frame, a crack at the sub-frame mounting location. It's not cracked all the way through (meaning down to the thru hole), it's just surface at the moment. Taking to a shop on Monday to get that squared away...will be like new againSmile

Spent most of my time over the past several night simply cleaning/degreasing/etc. some aluminum parts. I tried taking some parts to a semi-truck wash to have them spray some aluminum cleaner on it....that did NOTHING....so I was able to get ahold of some more serious cleaner from a local trucking company. Some things I did was sand blasting, wire brushing, and/or a sulfuric/hydrflouric acid wash....I think things are turning out well

Got the motor up on the bench and am going to start on that hopefully today. I was able to pull the head off to at least see what it looked like and I'm pretty pleased....he said it didn't have much time on a new top end/crank and it looks like that might have been the truth. Taking the lower end to my local shop (Hall's Cycles....THE BEST) this coming week and have them go through the bottom end...I just don't trust myself haha.

Can't forget the rust haha

More updates over the weekend once I get the cylinder off. Here's to hoping for good sights!

Sorry for two posts close together, but I was able to squeeze back out to the garage sooner than I though Smile . See below for some more progress with the motor:

Took piston out (a Wossner) and it actually looks pretty good....think I might put it back in....what do you guys think?

Supposedly had a new rod put in it very recently and I think that may be the case....looks fresh and feel solid

Gonna need some help here. I was told the motor was stock when I purchased it but come to find out, it looks like things have been massaged a little. The only identification mark I can find is what looks to be BK102.....any ideas or thoughts as to who's mark that is?

Of course, exhaust pieces were COVERED and looked terrible. Spent some time cleaning them all up, they turned out a lot better!

Pulled the ignition cover and everything looked super clean and fresh, I was pleasantly surprised. I was told it had a flywheel weight and it sure did....any trick to getting this thing off?

That's probably it for a while from me. I am getting that hairline crack fixed on Monday and have the lower end gone through later in the week, I hope to have some more progress pick by next week. Thanks for looking and please comment with any advice you might have.

Thanks,
Blake

Why not just stick a feeler gauge in the crank/rod? You are looking for less than .040 to be in tolerance.

Looks like the Ti subframe is .750 dia with .125 wall thickness if the one exposed piece they split for a seat tab bracket is the same tubing. The mounting tabs are all .065 thickness plate.

Still kind of in limbo, waiting on the motor and suspension so the real re-assembly can begin. I decided to take a few pics of some parts/pieces that have came in over the past few days...enjoy Smile

G2 Throttle System....have used these on many of my past bikes and love the options of throttle control it gives you.

Some of the carbon pieces from Lightspeed.....why do I love carbon SO much haha

LoudMouth Intake system. I've read where people complain about the seal around the air box, well this system take care of that PLUS is going to make changing filters much easier

Some misc. Ti pieces
(stock aluminum hangers with Ti hardware)

Have used "fat" bars in the past and standard "cross-bar" bars in the past...I think ODI hit the nail on the head with their new CFT oversized bars when the combined the best of both worlds.

Just a random pics of the cleaned up stock shift lever....with a Ti bolt of course haha

You're makin me feel shitty about my own CR haha. I'll just blame it on being a broke college student, great looking progress so far tho man! I like a lot of the options you've gone with so far, can't wait to see it all put together. It's like building Legos.

Honeslty, regarding the graphics, yes I plan to keep it very simple and "factory" looking. I've done plenty of bikes in the past with the wild/busy looking graphics....I want to kind of go in the opposite direction of that for this build.

Careful installing the covers! Use some gasket sealant so to won't have to tighten them too much. Also check the bolts to see how large of a shouldered contact area you can get away with. Go as big as you can if RaceTech is custom building any of the bolts for you. I bought some used carbon covers for my YX250F and they were a bit haggered up from someone cranking down on them. Drip, drip, drip....

Are you using aluminum or Ti for the engine cover hardware? Good looking stuff!

Thanks for the heads up newmann. I plan to use all Ti hardware to install these pieces.....

It seems to me that Ti galls really easily, so use a light grease for assembly and clean any exposed thread off before you disassemble. You'll be pissed if you trash a bolt. I do that with some of my OEM hardware, I ride a lot of sand. Blow out any holes in the frame with compressed air, every time. Nothing worse than a trashed thread ruining your day as you're leaving at 11am after loading the damn truck with everything else.
Oops, lookin great, btw. Enjoy.

Newmann,
You recommending to use the gasket sealant ALONG WITH the o-ring (clutch cover) and gasket (ignition)? What sealant do you recommend/did you use? Thanks!
