KTM - Not the only Orange bike out there...

Edited Date/Time 5/1/2012 9:51am
Just finished her - 1981 Can-Am MX6-B Haven't taken her out to the track and after riding it down the street and getting the pi$$ scared out of me, not so sure I am going to. Just as fast, if not faster than I remember, but holy smokes! - no brakes and the way it handled by flopping over in the turns reminded me of how a Schwinn Beach Cruiser turns - scary!

Nice! I remember seeing one in the A class racing in NC back then. It wasn't Barry Higgins I don't think, but the name escapes me... Any old NC racers remember who it was?

There are a couple of Canned Ham freaks here locally in Southeast Texas that have truckloads upon truckloads of stuff. And not talking pickup trucks either. Cool bikes, love the swingarm! Once you get the feel of it again, you'll be up to speed in no time.

Funny that you should ask that. Definitely what makes that bike unique. Instead of pulling the gas down thought the barrel and into the lower crank case the intake attaches to the side of the case and the gas gets pulled through to the crank case by a rotory valve instead of through reeds like a convential two stroke. That is what not only let's the bike rev, but gives it four stroke like bottom end. Works amazingly well, but it sure is one heavy set up.

Good observation on the C-12 Mutt. That's for my race bike, CRF450.

And yeah, I like the color orange!

I need a tight kicker for a 250 Rotax engine. Do you know the size of the carb? I have a 88 ATK250 that was my fathers bike. I want to restore it and ride it at times. The times I did ride it I would not have called it fast. Im thinking they used a different rotary valve on the ATK since it was a woods bike

Your bike looks great. You should fit a Yamaha or CR dual leading shoe front brake and wheel and go racing
I wish they still made the Preston Petty front fender

Vintage Iron sells a reproduction. I don't know who manufactures it, or who else may sell it.

Love the KZ! Where did the wheels and brakes come from?

Strictly Hodaka bought the Preston Petty name and was doing dead on replicas but then had mold problems with the Tony D front. You can try them. Hopefully they will again soon.

Max - Join this message group to get all your questions answered. they are a great bunch of guys with a wealth of knowledge:
Can-Am Message Group

Preston Petty stuff is available again. This guy actually met with Preston Petty, got the original molds and is officially the only true source for Preston Petty products -
Preston Pretty @ Strickly Hodaka

PN - I just checked the web site at Strickly Hodaka - looks like you are right. The Tony D fenders are gone. He only has the "Mudder" style...

You can go here: RTR Moto to get Can-Am stuff. He does a Tony D style front fender (The one on my bike) It is OK, but doesn't have the Preston Petty logos and is made of a little heavier plastic.
