I dont have a bike anymore but when I did I always found myself riding that fine line between pushing it and staying in control

i actually believe that how someone rides and their style is pretty reflective of their personalities IMO (not always, but sometimes..)

I am meticulous and how i go about things and i do not take chances unless i know the odds are in my favor and i remember riding like this. If I had a track wired I would hang it out but if i was unsure about something i would back it down, not to mention i am super sensitive to changes in the bike setup and was a good mud rider..lol.

hopefully when i get a bike again i am going to try and over come this and try to let it hang out more..brapp

Aztec is clear and open buddy. Somehow CO Springs has been blessed with none of the 60 inches of snow or so I've had at my house so far.

49 years old.17 major surgeries. Arthritis. A fused right wrist. Twin 2 year old boys. A job(Acting/Stunts) that requires me to be fit and not injured. My fitness isn't terrible compared to most of the guys in my age class so I can't blame my lungs at all.Unsure

My eyes were ultimately the problem. Everything in practice was cool and I was fast enough. But most motos they could visualize actions my body couldn't oblige. DNF's and concussions were the result.

i will be 37 next week, and try to not let anything get in the way of my speed. i was lucky enough to win my local series the summer before last in the +30 vet class. some life stuff got in the way of racing as much as i wanted last season but this year i plan to lay down some great laps again.still not as fast as i was when i was 16 racing 250 intermediate in 91. Lap 1-2: Balls
Laps 2-?: Endurance

Overall I'm pretty sure I'm faster now at 39 than when I was in my 'prime', but a lot of that has to do with me riding a 450 that chugs itself out of corners and over jumps versus being on a 125 where I had to actually work!

I've ridden more in the last eight years then ever before in my life do to breaks for college, starting a business ect. Not talking real fast, but I am as fast off road as I have ever been. Now at 49 my body is starting to bother me a bit. Riding with faster friends has always made me ride faster.

Competition sure can sharpen up those reflexes and skills too..and help develop some sack.

My speed on a motocross track has slipped just because I don't race every weekend like I did decades ago. If I were to ride as much as I used to the dust and rust would fall right off me. I still ski with the same reckless speed and aggression of my youth so my balls are fine.

That is my excuse! No more crazy triples of stupid rythm sections for me anymore!

My endurance is actually pretty good considering i smoke a pack of cigs a day. I just try to ride smart to keep from getting hurt. I still go pretty good when I'm practicing but I try to keep it within that comfort level. When I race I definitely hang it out more then I would just practicing

Its two fold. First we have a learned response from injuries from our past. This creates fear that we. have to as terry put "SUPPRESS". The second thing is our reaction time or reflex time, that is what will get us into trouble the most at an older age. My mind still thinks I can do the things I used to at a fast speed, but my reflexes are a lot slower resulting in crashes. So, I slow down to compensate.

I just crashed last week and jacked up my shoulder due to slow reflexes.Unsure

i've always thought along the same lines...
i think one could make the connection between fast racers and entrepreneurs using this logic as well.
It sure seems like there is a high percentage of local pros that become small business owners...
of course maybe thats because we are all undereducated and have no other choice than to make a go of it on our own, LOL.

There isn't a piece of me that doesn't ache or hurt at some point during the day...(only the knees and shoulder are bike related) everything else is age or work related. Strangely enough, the only time I don't really notice the pain is when I'm on the bike. I guess the adrenalin overwhelms everything. My speed nowadays is most definately limited by my lack of testicular fortitude. I'm not terribly slower than I ever was but I sure crash a lot less now. The truth is that the time I lose from not "attacking" the track is made up by not having to pick up the bike and kicking my guts out on that 4T beauty.

BACK when I use to ride the only thing that kept me from winning was I would get tired when I rode at warp speed. I use to ride with Factory riders and I could keep up for a few laps but then I would get tired and slow down.

My speed has always been limited by talent. I'm 44 and I can go just as fast, or maybe even a bit faster, now than when I was 20 because I have always had good endurance so talent was why I topped out, I just couldnt go any faster. The result is, until my body starts to give way and endurance starts to limit me, I'll end up going basically the same speed for 30+ years. The good thing is, guys that were a LOT faster than me when we were 20, I can run with now as they have slowed down, and in another 5 years I'll probably be faster.

What he said. One of my three kids is married now, so we'll see if the speed comes back when the other 2 leave the nest...yeah right. It was just a thought. Okay, more like wishful thinking.Wink

being a risk taker is part of being a business owner so i guess it's in our nature Smile

when i used to go to the local track on practice days, i actually met alot of older guys or middle aged guys who owned business (usually tradesmen types)

i think the reason u dnt see too many executives riding moto is that they don't have the time...when you own a business or work for yourself you dont have time either..but you can skip a day of work and make up for it later and no one is on your case about it.

i hurt all over but my friends tell me I could do damage in any vet class at lorrettas. I just ride for fun these days and love to pay 20 dollars and ride as fast or as slow as I want. I could always lead the faster classes but would always fade even though I trained my ass off non stop. I later found that a food allergy was causing my body to shut down and go into auto immune and starve me of energy. I eliminated the food and improved greatly but age caught up to me. i still am the only guy jumping certain sections that no one else will a lot of days. If i go to the track and just don't feel like i am riding well, I just cruise around at a slow pace but try and ride long motos to build on endurance. We will be taking a break and watching some young guns ripping around with thier dads/mechs timing them and I will say wow those kids are flying and my buddy always says that I am going a lot faster. Then I will often let some young rippers go ahead of me if we are entering track together so I don't get in thier way but usually motor past them anyway and it surprises me more than them until i pull my helmet off and I am old and grey. That does piss a few off. If you take all the ego and pressure off yourself it is a lot easier and more fun. I am just glad to be able to ride my dirtbike, its what i love at any speed.

haha...yep, a lot of young kids only focus on the jumps and we tend to be faster in the corners where it matters.

always funny seeing the old dudes who were pro still shred it

i reemmber in like 2003 i was @ the track and this old hippy dude would come to the track with his wife and 6 ft high german sheperd in one of those buses for retards/retired people....at the time 4-strokes weren't the only bikes on the track and he was on a yz426...he was destroying EVERYONE!

lol

i just thoguht it was funny because at the bigger or better known tracks in an area there is always that family that has a motor home/toy hauler with 10 bikes in the back for their kid(s) and this dude was just straight dirt bag stylin pittin out of an old bus.

he wasnt riding in work boots or anything, he had gear but he wasnt one of those fashion riders who always rock the latest n greatest..

Yep, most times if I go to a local track and there are, say, 50 riders there I'm never the fastest, usually around 10th or so, but I'm usually near the top in corner speed. I'll have a kid quad a jump I'm doing double-double then catch them in some corners, then they out jump me again. Some days if I'm not feelin it I'll just cruise around. Its nice not having to ride any faster than feel like.
