The dude that puts his hands on the side of his helmet says it all. If all you do is big jumps, then a minor mistake is a catastrophy. Hate to see injuries.

Why get off the bike there?? Keep that thing underneath you, unless you are so far over the front it's going to be a catapault. He was gooned out and landing low, but frankly I thought it looked survivable.

Why is that? because the guy didn't trick it? Or because he ate it? What's the "X" in FMX stand for again? I don't why most of you guys hate on freestyle. Riding is fun, some people enjoy tracks, some people enjoy ramps, and some people enjoy trails. Some; like me, enjoy all three. Anyway, the dumb thing this guy did was start out at a full gap. There's a way to make it pretty safe to learn. PUSH THE RAMP UP TO THE DIRT. Once you get the feel for a ramp pull it back. I know pros that push it in every show so they can get an idea for the ramp. Guys that superflip do it. This was definitely poor judgment that could have been avoided. On several levels. Guy needs more bike skills before blasting a ramp. and above all. NEVER BAIL IF YOU'RE RIGHT SIDE UP.

2006 would be my guess. (2004?)

So, if that's the case, you would be half right.Smile

Does Ministry play during ever crash scene? Note to self: never listen to ministry on the way to the track, or even sing it to yourself inside your helmet.

I agree. If he had just stayed with it he would have still gotten hurt but not nearly as bad.

One of my pet peeves is people like that. "I'm gonna buy a new mx bike and whick it up. I'm not scared".

I commented on this because the EXACT same thing happened to a guy I know, about 10 years ago.

There was an amature FMX event at a town in the area, and this guy, who came to the track lots with us, but usually sat on his tailgate most of the time, ( his motocross skills left lots to be desired ) decided he was going to GO BIG at the event. I didn't personally witness it, but what I heard is, he hit the biggest, longest ramp on his first run. The result - 2 broken legs in numerous places and wheel chair bound for at least two years. The last time I saw the guy he was walking, but with two canes.

It makes me sick to see these kind of videos - entirly preventable.

Little do you all know he did a very hard trick to do unless it is your first time on a jump............. The TC41 air wheelie!

I have nothing against FMX, the riders, or anything. I actually enjoy watching it.

But it gets on my nerves when I tell people that I'm planning on getting my son into it and they freak out because of all the crashes they see, and they see them mainly in FMX on tv. My point is, just look at the title of this video. That's not the dark side of motocross, it's the dark side of jumping big jumps.

I don't care if guys have fun doing that, or doing tricks, or just riding wheelies. Just don't call it motocross when videos like that give motocross an even worse image then it already has.

Motocross = racing.

Freestyle Motocross = freakshow.

My 2 cents...

Lets just call it Motorcycle Acrobatics LOL. We (IMO) don't hate on FMX we just don't like being so closely associated with and co-opted by it. Trix are for kids. Acts of dareing doo and thrill seeking don't impress me nearly as much as athletic prowess. You've seen one back flip you've seen them all, (Much respect tho to Hart for nutting up for the first one, Metz for showing what could really be done with it, and TP for taking it to the next level) but since then........Totally boring to watch, minimal skill set needed as far as riding a motorcycle is concerned. (once you get it down) I'm pretty sure you could take any flatbiller from the IE out to a FMX compound and have him jumping ramps in a day or so, and if he wanted to be part of a crew bad enough he'd be flipping within a week. (I've seen it happen) After you get over the fear of hitting a ramp into foam, you just progress from there. FMX is NOT motocross! Has absolutely nothing to do with it other then riding a modified MX machine. They have as much to do with motocross as aerial freestyle skiiers have to do with skiing. For many FMX is for people that are afraid to race but still want to be thought of as extreme. Simple as that....IMO. Having said all that I have total respect for what some of these guys have done with the biz side of FMX ala Hart-Deegan et al and I'd much rather see a couple guys hucking ramps at a SX halftime instead of watching uncoordinated fat guys run around in fatter suits......Bring back the KTM peewees THAT was good stuff!

haha that response is laughable. You have to be able to ride a bike to do that stuff. If it was that easy EVERYONE would be doing it. Who have you seen go from not riding to learning to flip in a week or so. Not happening. I have a feeling every freestyle motocross rider I know could outride most of you guys on the track any day. Saying it isn't skillful is stupid.
To the other guy who said modified bike and freakshow.... REALLY ? a lot of them don't even modify their bikes anymore. No need to with all the flip variations. Motocross is in the name for a reason. It IS motocross. Anyway, I do agree about bringing the ktm kids races back that was awesome!

For sure pro freestylers might have a lot of talent riding a bike and would smoke racing mx most of us mortals, but I know two guys who do pretty good stuff in a ramp and they really suck at the track, even more than me. They just have big nuts

I respectfully disagree. How can you say FMX has anything to do with actual motocross? What do they have in common other than the bike? I didn't say you didn't have to have skills are you kidding you need outrageous skills and huge cajones - just not BIKE RIDING skills, you need Spatial Awareness and Acrobatic skills. LOL you kinda answered your own question though, everyone IS doing it! and yes I know a whole group of people who became fairly proficient at freestyle with very basic bike skills - not much more than riding around the campfire in the dez for most of them and a couple were flipping within a month of wanting too - one good enough to progress to dirt. The ONLY bike skill you need to know other than how to ride a two wheeler is very basic throttle control on the wooden in-ramps and the quick burst for take off. You are confusing acrobatic skills with bike skills. I am very certain few current freestylers could compete in a amateuer national motocross at anything other than a novice level for more than a lap or two and I'm sure most would drop the anchor after 10 mins, a few of the old schoolers like Deegan, Metz, Hart, Adams etc is a totally different story, but the current crop of motorcycle acrobats........? I dont know. You know what I think looks really cool though is that Nuclear Cowboy show. That is the perfect stage for what your defending and I think is the proper progression of the event. I'd like to check that out when it comes to town.

Watching freestyle riders wad themselves up, snap necks, and pretzel femors never gets old. Keep the fmx coming.

Freestyle is not motocross!!! I agree completely! I hate being asked by my non-moto friends if I can do a backflip or superman, just because I ride MX! it is not hating, it is just stating the fact, yes they ride motocross bikes but that is about it!! Don't get me wrong, they do amazing things. We don't call trials TMX or Enduro EMX, heck enduro is more moto than free style!! They should call it Motorcycle Acrobatics as was mentioned earlier.

When do we start voting on it?

That was a brutal crash. But, I still rank Josh Hill's botched backflip as worse to watch. Saw that clip once and that was enough for me (talk about "Femur Floppage" Sick ). Speaking of Josh, he's been through a long & tough recovery - hope he has a successful 2012 racing season!

"Why is that? because the guy didn't trick it? Or because he ate it? What's the "X" in FMX stand for again?"

Because words have definitions. If someone adds a word to another word then the original word no longer applies.

Motocross is an endurance sport that has no judge, just a gate, turns, obstacles and a checkered flag.

Freestyle Motocross is a show, with judges like figure skating.

You are talking about my buddy Kevin Rempel. Not exactly the same crash, but a bail out for sure. If he wouldnt have bailed, he would be dead. Kevin is now walking again, is a member of Canada's official Sledge Hockey team, is a motivational speaker and he just bought a V-Rod to ride on the street! Kev is and AMAZING guy and I'm proud to call him my friend. I am about 20 years older than him but he is a true inspiration to me.

TSN did a segment on his life this past spring. His crash is in the vid.

I took this picture of Kevin with Ronnie Renner and Tommy Clowers at the DMXS party in Atlanta a few years ago.

My 2 cents...
Is it called FMX because they ride a motocross bike? Is it riding motocross when you ride your bike down the street? FMX needs a new name like Stunt Riding or Trick Riding take the motocross out of it because its NOT motocross.
