The KTM 250SX that Langston rode in 2002 Supercross was a death machine.

2007 YZ 450F, GL'8 had a terrible half a year on it as did I and mine was about as close to "factory" as a Satalite team bike could get. As soon as GL got the 08' his year turned around completely as did mine, before my Glen Hellen crash that broke my right leg. That 07' YZ wouldn't turn no matter how it was set up. Then they made a few minor changes to the frame geometry on the '08 and it handled like a dream. I will admit that my '07 race bikes were unbelievably fast though, too bad they just wouldn't turn.

How about Bradshaw riding the POS aircooled WR against the Hondas?
I remember that.....that thing sounded like it was gonna come apart at Unadilla.

I remember Albertyn talked about the 96RM250 in a podcast. The bike was dead slow. It had approx 38 horsepowers stock. Thats roughly 3 more than a 2011 KTM125!

What really impresses me is how fast Albertyn was outdoors, he was always a threat even though he had the worst bike out there. I think a lot of his crashing was due to him pushing too much to compensate for a slow bike. IMO Albertyn would be a mulit time champ in the US nationals if he rode for a different brand.

The only thing missing on that thing was the porcelain tank with the handle mounted on the triple clamps. Oh. And the basket of reading material within convenient reaching distance. What a disaster.

Bradshaw's air cooled 490, circa '91

McGrath's KTM 250, the year he retired

I heard that Kehoe's (Suzuki) 125's in that era were garbage too, can you confirm? If he was on a Honda (or a Kawasaki) even, I think he would have got that 125 outdoor title that eluded him...

It's kind of funny to me, it seems all the "worst bikes in history" are all tied to a particular rider not performing well. Just like today, I think most bikes are great machines. Even the Yamaha everyone bags on for Stewart not doing well, is a great bike. It may be set up totally wrong, but still it's not the bike.

Were the bikes really that bad or was it just a lack of time, dollars, or effort to make them work for the factory riders?

I would have to throw out JS7 2011Factory Yamaha as a good candidate.
Based on what? Rider or mechanic comments? Not your opinion, but theirs to support your position... Also, what basis do you believe that the JS7 2011...

Your original post was based on rider comments, wasn't it? Talking about how Hannah trashed his Yamaha after he left?

@ Harry_Gray -- I of course never got to ride any of the bikes, just what I remember seeing back in the day. I remember watching Kehoe run away with a moto at LST on one of those RMs, would have been 87 or 88. I know the stockers were just mid to top with anemic bottom end, so I'm guessing it wouldn't have been very forgiving even in factory form if you got out of the good line or flubbed a turn. At the time, the stock Hondas were SO strong. As for Kehoe and an outdoor title... Honda pulled Dymond off of a Husky 500 and he won them two, so if Kehoe could have had access to the Honda's those years there is no telling what kind of damage he could have done!
Rallendude has a great point -- you can't just call it a bad bike because one guy didn't do well on it. I tried to think of ones that seemed to give everyone a hard time.

I remember reading somewhere that the yzm500 was garbage on wheels.

Gotta be the YZ490s that Bradshaw and Glover raced. When they sounded like they were about to blow up - they were running right.

The whole while they were up against the KX500 and CR500.. two of the best MX bikes of the era..

Bradshaw didn't even get a YZ490, it was a freakin' enduro bike that Yamaha gave him to race! I posted a pic on page 2. Here's another of Bradshaw chasing JMB on that piece of crap WR500.

Anyone who rode a 86 RM, including Hannah and Kehoe. Complete junk bikes.
The factory 82 YZ's that were racked, (front end) out air cooled piles of shit. They were racing against the 82 RC 250 works Hondas.
McGrath on the 97 RM250. That was literally a joke. The bike had no low end power. I was watching McGrath at the LA SX in practice riding. I just could not believe how poorly his bike was set up. They had both factory Suzuki and Pro Circuit building his bike. I just coul not understand how they could be so far off on it. Emig won the championship by default. McGrath was dissabled on the Suzuki that year.

The 91 WR 500 was actually lighter than the CR and KX500's. The problem with the WR was that it would get hot and the power would fade. You could not keep pace with the guys on the water cooled bikes. The WR had plenty of power, as Bradshaw holeshot many motos on the WR. He just could not stay with them for the entire moto. Remember the CR500 does not have a power valve like the KX does. The WR did not have a power valve either. My point is with a 500 you do not need one.

O'Mara's 89 RH250, when his triple clams broke as he was winning the 89 Anaheim SX!

The 84 RM 250 factory bikes. They turned the air box into the gas tank for Barnett and Burnworth's bikes. They handled like crap.
I still think the 86 RM's are the worst of all time. They went from having the best linkage system ever (original full floater), to the eccentric cam system, the worst possible linkage ever. It was worst than not having a linkage at all. The motors on those bikes were so SLOW. Both the 125 and 250. That was the year Hannnah came aboard after leaving Honda and racing the 85 RC250 works bike. Talk about culture shock. We can only imagine what he thought after leaving team Honda and riding the Suzukis.

1997 factory RM 250. McGrath said in his book Wide Open "the Suzuki was giving me problems I wasn't sure I could overcome. It handled poorly and was really slow. How's that? Compared to my CRs, the RM was a turtle. Handled like one, too. The bike didn't hit hard enough anywhere in the powerband. It was sluggish coming out of corners and just didn't have the mid - range to run with other bikes on the straightaways." He goes on to rail on the conventional Showa forks and the clutch as well. Don't think he enjoyed his year on the Suzi.
Best example i can think of! i dont have quotes on it but it was def mentioned in his book.

Yep, this bike is highly over rated IMO. Did anyone ever think that it was the rider (RC or RD) that made this bike look good? It also took Metty, a title contender on a Honda down a notch in his performance overall last year. However, I do believe that the bike was damn good and I also think the new YZ450 is damn good in the right hands.

...OK, we've seen PLENTY of bikes we lust after. Now, what were the WORST FACTORY bikes ever made?

Not too many riders will trash on their machinery, but which bikes have been trashed the most?

Bob Hannah's trashing of his old Yamaha after he went to Honda is classic...

Not looking for production trash, but factory trash...

We need Rider/Mechanic quotes, not your personal opinions on this one...

Any others besides Bob's rants?
So you're asking only for riders or mechanics to comment. Why limit it to only these? That's king of like saying "I don't want any of you plain people commenting. This is only reserved for riders and mechanics."

Throwing a chain and running out of gas have nothing to do with the bike. One has to do with shit luck and the other is someone didn't put enough gas. When did it ever throw him off the bike randomly, or seize?
