Since when does Jett settle for 2nd place?

I'm a fan of all riders of the sport and would become more of a Jett fan if he was just a little more humble.  We all know Jett isn't cool with settling for 2nd place because he wants to win everything, so stop with the BS excuses about letting up in the 1st moto to conserve energy for the 2nd moto.

The truth is, Jett got his ass kicked in the first moto and he had nothing for AP or Tomac.  We saw Jett try to push and made mistakes, so he backed it down to avoid crashing (not to save energy).  He should take a note out of RC's book and just admit he got his ass handed to him and they had some work to do for the second moto (which would have been the humble truth).  But instead, Jett made some excuse that he slowed up to save energy for the moto 2 which we all know is BS, because Jett was in 3rd place (not 2nd) and would never settle for a 2nd OA.  If Jett had been 2nd moto 1 that excuse would have worked, but everyone knows that 99 times out of 100 Eli was going to be there to take 1st or 2nd in moto 2, giving Eli the OA win and Jett a second place.  It's clear Jett was not backing off in moto 1 while betting on the 1% probability of Tomac not being there to take the overall in moto 2, which very luckily for Jett in this case did happen, and he got gifted with the OA.  This is very rare, but I think's it's fair to say this might be Jett's first OA gift.

So for the hardcore Jett fans, would you rather Jett own up to getting his ass kicked in moto 1 like a lot of former champions did, or do you prefer the BS excuse of backing it down to save energy for moto 2 when he was in 3rd place, essentially saying he's fine with for settling for 2nd OA?

I'd much rather hear a humble Jett admit he got his ass kicked and had some work to do for Moto 2 (see many former Champions)....no more BS excuses that don't align with Jett's "win all" mindset.

You are making the one massive assumption here probably because you are not a fan of Jett, you big assumption here is that what he says was BS, but of course your assumption or opinion if you like, could well be wrong.

All I see is you once again stirring shit against a rider which vital is known for unfortunately... it's sad when you simply cannot accept a riders reason.

Do you also not accept AP's reason for what happened late in moto 1 ? (He thought race was over but was another 2 laps to go)? Or is it only Jett you will not believe?

I think Jett was pushing and getting sketchy in moto 1 like both AP and ET were, rather than chase and risk crashing it seem he decided play it safe and save energy. His lap times dropped noticeably slower at an exact time, it turned out to be a good option. He put his ego aside and chose strategy instead.

You can shit on this as much as you want, but championships and overalls trump moto wins … that’s how it is.

“Once they got the gap, I’m like ehh, I’ve still got another moto of this”

He didn’t decide to settle until after he realized he had nothing for them that moto. So he dialed it back and maintained.

It’s not that deep.

2 things can be tru , yea he got smoked in the 1st moto but he told u he couldn’t hang so he just sat back & reserved himself for the 2nd moto & at the end of the day he got the last laugh cause he was the most consistent overall rider on the day & extended the pts lead , thts called be being smart , mature & having good  situational awareness, im pretty sure all them boiis don’t wana settle with nothing less than a win but u take whts giving to u , its tht simple

He wasn’t stoked on it but I think the excuse was valid. It was the smart play and it worked out. One rider was hallucinating about a 2 lap board and the other is one of the fittest riders the sport has seen, however they weren’t able to execute the 2nd moto.

Jetts not all the way back race fitness wise from injury, why risk cooking yourself in 100 degree weather?

Not making smart decisions costs you championships- Exhibit A; Chase S 2025 SX and Rnd 1 2025 MX

Js7 said it perfectly, Jett lost the toe to AP and Tomac in the beginning, he was actually matching their lap times constantly in the second half of the moto but it wasn't enough to make up that gap again. Wether that was him conserving energy or his bike not allowing him to push faster, still can't take anything away from Tomac and AP in that moto, they rode awesome.

It's actually insane, you know Jett is an alien when the moto world goes crazy over one 3rd place moto finish. 😂

I'm actually glad he lost a moto so we don't have to hear about the perfect season in every media every weekend. 😅

Since yesterday we saw that there is a circumstance where he relents. Don't count on seeing that often or even again this summer. The young man is as good at cutting laps as anyone we've ever seen. Combine that with his otherworldly starting ability and it takes special circumstances for it to unravel for him. I wonder if in some small way even Jett was fine with it. No more talk or pressure of winning every moto. He can still win every overall. I hope Eli keeps pushing and another guy or two steps up. Got to start ahead of him and NOT let him by early in the moto.

He won the overall yesterday and I'm assuming extended his points lead? I'm sure he's fine not winning every moto. Hes not RC. RC wanted to won by 45sec every moto. Jett is fine with a 5sec lead. That makes him not humble? Got it

Jett also said his bike setup was a little stiff the first moto so trying to push on a rough track with a stiff bike is pretty sketch.

I think it was smart of Jett to back it off, and not chase the perfect season. I think the weight of trying to remain undefeated last year played into his downfall. Winning championships means knowing when to push it and when to play it safe. Moto wins and overalls are nice, but at the end of the day, championships are what really matter, imo.

Did you miss his 250 championships? Or his 450 SX championship? Or SMX championship? He played it safe many times. Hell it was probably worth settling for third now just to remove the perfect season pressure.

Jett doesn’t like losing. But he is smart enough to know when its not worth pushing it. He got to third, pushed for a few laps and decided he was getting nowhere and couldn’t close the gap so just cruise it in for moto 2. Saving energy. Although it did cost him a position in the end. He didn’t think he was going to catch them and said as much.

Jett has become a “big picture” racer, willing to take a small hit when circumstances dictate.  Sexton would benefit immeasurably by doing the same.

To start , I’m not a Tomac or Jett fan boy, I like both riders and respect both rider for the tremendous talents that they both are. Now the truth is you really have no idea about Jett and what was going on in his head nor does anyone else. Maybe he was ,maybe he wasn’t , maybe he was playing head games with Eli and didn’t want him to know he was the better man in moto 1. Personally, based on what happened in the second moto , I’ll take him at his word. Personally after watching the 1st moto , I thought Jet was still going to win the OA. To suggest that he got lucky is Rich IMO. My reasoning for this, is because it seems like Jett is the one who has consistently gotten good starts and puts himself in a position to win . I actually wasn’t surprised tha Eli was so far back at the start of Moto 2. At any rate it did make things a little more interesting with Jett placing 3rd in moto 1.

Yep, why he’s even more dangerous. He will lose a battle to win the war without getting too worked up about it.

Yesterday was brutal on the riders. It waa a day that championship dreams can be lost. If he was holding something back for the 2nd moto so be it. He won the overall and has the point lead. Onward to the next round.

i just don’t buy the damn bike set up BS excuse for him in that instance.   when you’re that good and just went 1-1 there’s no excuses. Tomac straight up out worked everyone that first moto

Im not saying Jett's bike was the reason. But as far as "bike set up BS"..
I'm assuming you don't know too much about bike set up or never been fast enough to make changes to a bike.
But 1 set up doesn't work across every track.1 click on the suspension can make notable difference on how the bike reacts. Riders make small adjustments all race day to the bike.

especially with the tack as demanding and rough as it was.

His bike looked noticeably worse than it usually does. I don’t know why the setup was so off though.

I think his remarks on the podium about backing it down to save energy was an admission that he got smoked without saying that directly. He basically admitted to waiving the white flag. These guys don’t want to give each other a mental edge so they watch what they say. If Eli hangs a 1-1 on him I expect he will admit to defeat and congratulate Eli. Same if Eli wins the title. This is new territory for Jett in 450mx, he’s not going to go 22-0 with Eli in the series, he’s going to have to win the title with consistency and Eli is going to be in his grill non stop. Eli isn’t going to roll over like Chase. We’re in for an incredible summer.

I don’t know what you were watching but I thought it was pretty obvious, just like Tomac’s was last week.
But even with out that observation the lap times tell the story.

Both Jett and Hunter’s bike were off in the first moto and they made changes for the second.
First moto Jett was half a second off the fastest lap (which is nearly always him) while Hunter was over three seconds off!
Second moto, Jett is fastest as usual, and Hunter is within a second.

Big improvement right? Almost as if their bikes weren’t good in the first race…..that’s still not an excuse though, just shit that happens in racing, but how you deal with that is the telling factor.

For a guy who pisses talent as he does he's pretty humble lol.

Jett gets "smoked" in 3rd place and apparently it's not acceptable on here.

Didn't he end his season last year at Hangtown for pushing?

Dude finds a way to win even when he is not having the best day…. He executed the 2nd moto start, that Tomac & Pless needed….. does not bode well for competition moving forward…. I hope I am wrong but Tomac needed that O/A….

And yet we're two races in and he has a 16 point lead already. 17 over Eli. He's got a bigger points lead than Haiden in the 250 class

You can shit on this as much as you want, but championships and overalls trump moto wins … that’s how it is.

fwiw his lap time drops mirror plessinger and tomac almost exactly. He didn't just decide to slow down. pless and tomac just inched away

You and a lot of others are completely missing the point.   Jett said he backed it down to save energy for Moto 2 which is complete bullshit because he finished 3rd in Moto 1, not 2nd.  Had Jett finished in 2nd this excuse would be a non-issue because as they say, " 2nd in Moto 1 is as good as a 1st".  We all know Jett can easily win moto 2, but Jett is not dumb enough to calculate his assumed 3-1 is going to beat Eli's 1-2 for the OA win.

Jett and Eli gapped the field by almost 30 seconds last week and Jett knows there's a 1% chance of Eli not making it up to 2nd in Moto 2, which is why the BS about backing it down to save energy for moto 2 is a BS excuse.  He backed it down after almost crashing when trying to run their pace, which is the humble truth, and it would have been nice to see Jett admit that.  But instead, he makes excuses that he wants to save energy so he can get a 2nd place OA behind Tomac right?  Nah....that's not the mentality of Jett or any other champion unless it's the last race of the season to win a close championship battle.
