I'm getting the itch for outdoors so l decided to highlight the careers of two of the best to ever do it! Their stats are so alike, I wish their primes overlapped just a little bit longer, would have made for some more great championship battles.

I assume that counts Dungey's comeback?
Yeah also thinking Dunge’s comeback season would have altered his stats a little.
But pretty cool to see the ‘Diesel’ actually had more wins in less races than Tomac.
That’s not very dieselesque and goes against how most people remember Dungey. Dude was fast!
It does. Certainly dings his averages just a little bit but still elite.
And then there's Hangtown 2015.. 😉

Massive respect to both. Dunge is underrated; I understand the reasons, but his comeback sealed him as a legend for me personally. He loves the sport
Yup, Dunge won the title that year.
Legends. I love them both.
I'd rather see the comparison with a prime Dungey than one that came back after 6 years away.
one can dream but imagine the battles we could’ve had outdoors if RV stayed a lil longer with dunge , the still current guard in dunge & RV with the new kids on the block with Eli & Kenny , dunge had to go thru tht new crop of Eli , Kenny , marv , ando , seely & baggett without his other Ryan counterpart 😂
True true, gotta be in it to win it!
Average margin of victory of 12 and 15 seconds is legit. Would love to have the data to do that for Stew and RC.
Tomac had a higher peak, Dungey’s week in and week out was superior.
Advantage Dungey, although Tomac probably had more spectacular moments and has the title edge. But Tomac should have won so much more. Dungey retired and Roczen got hurt.
Eli also got hurt, you gotta think he would have been better in 2016 had he not ruined his shoulders.
A peak Eli vs 2016 Ken would have been all time
RV had them all covered in my opinion. He was a special dude.
I do not want to be that guy who denigrates one championship vs another...
But in two of Dungey's championships - his toughest competitors were Alessi and Metcalfe.
The level for all 4 of Tomac's outdoor titles was much more difficult.
But people want to say Dungey won by being consistent.
Fact is, he was seriously fast.
Agreed. But his injury wasn’t as career derailing as Kenny’s. When Kenny was out and Dungey retired in 2017 I thought he was gonna win 10 races but he barley beat Musquin who hurt his knee that season. 2018 was really the only time his win total matched his talent.
Yea, in 2010 and 12, but the other two were the same guys Eli had to race.
Pit Row
In 2017 and 2018, Tomac's biggest competitor was Marvin Musquin. In 2017, after Musquin, it was guys like Bagget, Wilson and Cole Seely. Tomac win the title in 2019 over Roczen, but lost the title in 2020 to Zach Osbourne and in 2021 to Ferrandis.
I'd give the 450 edge to Dungey career wise. Also, Tomac didn't win any big boy titles until Dungey retired.
I believe 2013 Villopoto, 2015 pre-shoulder injury Tomac, 2016 Roczen, and 2023 Jett are the best MX seasons since the Carmichael/Stewart era. Would be interesting to see who would come out on top, but prime Villopoto was insanely fast and just undeniable.
2022 as well. One could argue that was his best MX title, as Sexton is an extremely "worthy" opponent to beat, especially considering he actually did a good job of avoiding crashes that season. Tomac pretty much beat him straight-up (aside from Unadilla).
Those stats are close! I really don’t count Dungey’s last MX season toward his total. Dungey very likely got robbed on the 2011 title by running out of fuel.
Be interesting to see their head to head record.
This was the real decider of the 2011 championship
True that. On that day Reedy had won the first moto, had more than a moto win’s worth of points lead in the championship, and had just passed RV and was pulling away again……then disaster.
No Chadapult I think he wins the title, even if Dunge didn’t run out of fuel. 2011 was the fastest Reed ever was outdoors imo. But if’s don’t count and you have to be there all the way to the end.
He was king of the power slide
For sure. Beating a healthy RV and RD in their prime, in MX no less, would have been the greatest thing Chad ever accomplished. He was well on his way. He had both of those guys covered that year. I remember thinking I was dreaming when I watched him beat the field by like 1min+ at Hangtown. Truly great stuff.
Tomac in 2015 would have without a doubt gone 22-0. Another tragic robbery and ‘what could have been’ after he had a fluke crash at Thunder Valley that destroyed his shoulder and set him back a couple of years.
This is why I don’t rank the GOATS of our sport on championships alone. So many championships have fallen in to the laps of consistent riders, while superior talents had bad luck or mishaps.
pathetic
Dungey is easily the most underappreciated rider in the history of the sport. He'd likely have another 450 outdoor title in his stat column if it weren't for bike problems the one year. Dude was a straight up winner and all most of us could do is make up fairy tale shit about his speed.
