They are unfortunately never going away. The up/down votes are a way to track and drive more “engagement”. Vital then sells that engagement to advertisers. The up/down votes are not for improving user experience. They are for $$

I think they have a valid function. On the positive side it means people can agree with something which largely matches what they would have written anyway. It saves endless repetition. From the lazy side of things it means you can just vote for something when you can't be arsed adding a post - or don't have time. As for downvotes - who cares.
This place was much more entertaining without the lame FB up and down votes… what’s the point… it’s childish and lame and eliminates the Bears… although i will never give up and continue the bear exercise in futility as the newer members don’t understand what the Bears are for! Hey mister wizard the Bears are the Down vote and a way for the board to self regulate itself… again… back when it was fun to post here!

Yeah, I haven't set the block on anyone and when I first open a thread there are ones that are already blocked and they also don't even have any thumbs up or down yet.
It's like the mods have some posters set on a default block. 🤔
