Buddy of mine is buying a 350EXC, wants me to get back in to riding with him. I'm thinking of digging the old KDX200 out of the shed and getting her ready to go.

The question, I'm 62yo and have broken my collarbones 4 times, two times each side (3 time mcycle 1 time bicycle). Luckily I have full motion and strength no metal installed but they are pretty lumpy. Wife not real happy I may get back to riding cuz of shoulders.

Problem is I know once I get back on the bike even though I say we will just 'trail ride', the feeling will come back and I'll want to wick it up a bit. I simply cant afford to hurt my shoulders again.

So I'm looking for shoulder/collerbone protection. Any recommendations?

I say get an EVS neck donut and learn to tuck and roll. Lot of times its the helmet that breaks the collar bone. I don't know of any product that specifically protects the area.

Chest protectors with proper shoulder guards are few and far between in this day and age, but Alpinestars and HRP offer decent options and so is this one available through Cyclegear:

It's basically a 2000's Fox Airframe 👍

I wear a Leatt 5.5 neck brace on top of an Alpinestars Bionic Action Jacket and it works great!

I am also experimenting with the Fox Titan (have used it ~ 3 times, Leatt doesn't fit as well as with Alpinestars) as well as the Leatt 6.5 body armor - and I have not used this yet, but it looks VERY protective.

That’s what I have run since they came out. Nothing is gonna save you from breaking a collar bone.

I agree with Swordfish. Nothing is going to keep you from breaking clavicle. I’m in the same boat as you. I wear a Fox Air Cage that has padded shoulders. On top of that I put an EVS Vex chest protector with suspended shoulder protection. Sure it looks stupid but I’m planning on riding till I die.

Thanks everybody, I'm too old to be breaking any more bones. Just don't heal as fast as I used to. And truthfully it is a burden on the wife. Got some shopping to do I guess.

I had no idea that existed.

It's an interesting thing.

I'm not sure the section over the collar bone would help as much as my pain in the arse taping for my AC separation issues ( well, I'm certain of it), but, it might help a bit.

Something I miss, And Want, is the shoulder cup being netted on my body armour - as in the cup, being suspended above the should / humerus, with netting.

Such a feature delivers much better protection in my opinion, but I can't find body armour with that feature, that I like. I've run through my treasure trove of Acerbis Zoom Body Armour now - Bear Sweat, rots everything eventually .......... Whistling

I ride with a Leatt 4.5 and it’s great I’ve had some pretty nasty get offs to the point where in the air I was expecting broken collarbones (have done 2 already) and came out ok thankfully. The 4.5 pro has some gnarly shoulder protection

Duck, the EVS Vex has the netted suspended shoulder.

Nothing will prevent a collarbone break if you fall just right. If you look at the mechanics of a collar bone break, no chest protector will offer any protection against a break. They are all basically roost guards.

See my review of the RXR Protect Cyb-R chest protector and Bumber shoulder protector. I also wear a Leatt neck brace with the RXR (I have both the Bullet and the Cyb-R) and it fits great. I think the combination of a good CP and neck brace will give you the best collar-bone protection. The neck brace can't touch your collarbone if it's over a CP.

And don't even get me started on this "tuck and roll" business. That's like saying you should jump out of the car just before a crash. Have you ever seen anybody who wasn't just a rag doll when thrown over the bars? If Herlings can't do it, nobody can.
