PW50 Oil Injection Delete - Pros vs Cons...

To those who have blocked off the oil injection: How is long term reliability? Pros vs. Cons? Performance improvement? Performance degradation? What premix oil did you switch to?

I've only once relied on an oil-injection system (1987 Kawasaki 650SX Jetski, was brand new) and it failed without warning, seized the engine ... upstream of a damn dam. No kidding. Luckily friends were in a nearby boat and helped me get out of a hairy situation.

I've only run premix ever since.

Funny how the circumstances under which something happens can really shape how you feel about things.

What's a PW50? Just kidding, but if you've never heard of issues - why lose the convenience? But I am biased, as I said, and I just keep premixed fuel handy so there's NEVER a question of proper lubrication. But I am sure there are a ton of KTM TPI guys who think it would be crazy to remove oil injection given the convenience (and maybe necessity?).

Final thought (I slept on it):
The oil tank IS another thing to check (and forget). Plus, you can get "stuck" without enough oil in the tank at times - which isn't cool (but is rare). If you get into the habit of running premixed fuel, it really is one less thing to mess with. AND you'll have ratio options. Another angle: maybe the oil injection is something to teach your kid and their "job" is checking it and there is pride/growth in that? There's value there, for sure.

Not a lot of compelling info I added, sorry.

I'd remove the oil injection to remove a failure point.

So I’ve never done it myself, but-I don’t really see a potential downside. Less weight, less potential points of failure, more control over your mix. Seems like a win win to me

On some bikes you can’t eliminate the oil injection without frying the bottom end. Don’t know specifically about the PW.

This is the biggest downside I see, it will no longer be AMA legal. If it's not getting raced then no real downside, especially if you also ride a two stroke and they can share a gas can. I will say though the PW oil injector is pretty reliable, the throttle cables would be the weak link in my experience.

Just wondering what you do with the port on the carb for the oil injection after you do away with the system.

I left a length of the hose attached and put a tiny screw in to plug it

I removed it as others have as a sole convenience as I run premix in my bike and didn’t want to haul reg gas…  it didn’t really add or lose performance… but my boy just likes to ride and race local stuff, so I’m not trying to get all the performance out of the little bike.. I run motul 800 at 40:1 and haven’t fouled any plugs and have a good chocolate plug

Removed ours and no problems. Bike isn’t ama legal either way..

If I was going to keep it stock and use as intended, I would keep it. Specially if I was going to sell it when outgrown. 

If I was going to mod it, I would delete it.

I did the oil injection delete on my daughters PW80, it made a big difference.  It used to run very rich and sloppy, and it may be anecdotal, but it seems to rev faster without the extra load on the little engine.

Not a pw50 but I blanked off the oiler on our ktm 50 mini and I definitely recommend. It’s easier to start and runs cleaner now however the biggest reason is for simplicity. I have 2 boys on 50s, one the mini and the other on a senior and trying to get everything sorted between gear, bikes and snacks, not having to worry about seperate fuel and oil plus checking is a huge help!

We sell many of the block off plugs for the PW50. Most find they can mix the gas to the ratio they prefer and not rely on the oil injection system that may fail, also much cleaner. We also offer a 1 piece cable so its direct to the carburetor also less pieces to fail or hang up from a dirty oil injection system.

I left my kid's PW50 with the stock injector in it. He was learning how to ride, not racing, and there was little risk of having the pump go out (we bought a brand-new one.) I figured he would grow out of that bike in a short time and it would resell better if it was stock. (Oddly enough, my wife and I couldn't bring ourselves to sell the thing... I still have it. We ride it every now and then just to keep it operational. I have a nephew who will be old enough for it soon and then maybe grandkids someday...)
