I love the idea, but I'm wondering out loud how beaming gigajoules of electric energy down to Earth will affect migratory birds, people with pacemakers, computers, and flammable objects. Hmmmmm.... I'm sure they'll think of all those things, right? Maybe I should read the damn articles and see...

EDIT: Focused microwaves. Just as long as nobody tries to convert that into a space-based energy weapon...

We have nuclear clean energy solutions sitting right in front of us, yet we choose to ignore it and refuse to roll back antiquated regulations that make smaller modular reactors impossible to permit. The amount of energy stored at the atomic level is absolutely mind blowing, the fact that we're actively discouraging harvesting of it is a crime against humanity.

This all day long. The push back comes from conventional energy producers who don't want to see their dog run out of the yard.

Solving the energy issue is really easy. Just let them Texas and Oklahoma oil patch boys run things and problem solved.

There is also pushback from some of the ‘green’ activists . I recall reading about protests against nuclear in Germany just recently .

Fer cryin' out loud. This idea makes as much sense as an atomic hand grenade....or when the prostitute tells you she's got aids, syphilis, and herpes but you're horny.

Just because you CAN...doesn't mean you should.

My rack on the USS Theo Roosevelt was about 100 yards from a reactor. Didn’t affect me none, ‘cept this here left testicle that keeps on a-glowin’ at night.

I literally have one ten miles from my main home.
The watts bar reactor.
Never been worried about it.

There are so many possibilities. Why not use the tides. You realize how much water moves in and out of a bay? Certainly enough to run some generators. What about waves lifting up and down floats that turn generators.
The ideas are endless. Why have we not figured how to turn heat to energy? OK there's solar concentration but
there has to be a way to turn just pure heat to energy. Sure seems like you could use the waves to "pump" the pressure to RO water and create fresh water to boot. It's funny how the "greenies" actually keep us from doing things that you'd think they'd like.

You're about to see a whole new era in small modular nukes. There is one coming to the Idaho National Lab site that will be participating in energy markets. DOE putting a lot of money into this.
Of course siting them will be a challenge, especially if they get on the wrong side of the enviro groups. SMRs do away with some of the problems of big nuke, like the insane up-front cost.

What energy problem are we trying to solve? Is it the one that exists in liberals heads?

And Hydrogen is NOT a solution to anything any time soon…For example just to pipe hydrogen anywhere in this country would require all new pipelines..ever heard of hydrogen embrittlement? You could never use existing pipelines…

And natural gas is needed to make hydrogen…

Oil and gas is here to stay and so it’s best to continue to make the process of extracting and consuming fossil fuels cleaner.

It's sad really. Just like Frankenstein, people actually hate what they can't understand. All you have to say is "nuclear" and the conversation is done because that word is scary.

USS Ronald Reagan spends ~7 months a year moored about a mile from my office, and I've never worried about it once.

Environmental effects aside using fossil fuels for power has all sorts of downsides that nuclear supplemented with wind and solar don’t.

Has nothing to do with owning the libs I promise

Pretending this is the path forward is just lip service..

It’s always liberals proclaiming the world will end in 10 years if we don’t quit fossils fuels- while flying private jets around the world. They are the biggest supporters/consumers of fossil fuels.

It’s amazing folks believe these hypocrites- virtue signaling at its best…

So in summary, the people telling you there is an energy crisis/environmental crisis don’t even believe that themselves..otherwise they would be the first to make changes in their energy usage behavior, and they never will.

The people flying in private jets are much more important then the regular folk. They also buy carbon offsets. So they are fine. Sarcasm

I'd be ok with it. I mean, I grew up in Simi Valley about 5 miles from the reactor that melted down back in the day and other than a slight twitch and a drinking problem I'd say nuclear is good.

From what I understand, the technology is there and designs exist, but because of extremely outdated permitting processes and regulations put in place during the Jimmy Carter era it's just not economically feasible to install smaller modular reactors. France gets about 70% of its power from nuclear because their regulations make sense and they're also able to recycle their waste, which we're not allowed to do in the US by law.

I imagine a world where individual cities or counties are powered locally by modular reactors, just like war ships, with incredibly small amount of waste and no emissions polluting the environment. It really makes you wonder why this isn't being pushed through as fast as humanly possible. . .

There’s so much money on the line for potential solutions. Don’t you think it’s kind of ignorant to just assume your random ass ideas haven’t already been vetted and ruled out by people who do this shit professionally?

No doubt some ideas are not feasible but you'd be silly to think that the petroleum industry doesn't fight tooth and nail to keep competition from gaining traction.

Oh ye of limited imagination. Actually the correct answer is no. What makes you think they're random ass? Many of these technologies are held up by "greenie" groups which are actually funded by the oil industry to keep our dependence on oil. Do you know that less than 100 years ago Los Angeles had one of the premier public transportation systems? And big oil bought it up just to shut it down to sell more product? There are actually some roads that have the rails still in them from the rail car system.
