I have Anthem Blue Cross Elements Preferred plan. Small group at .110 (the max premium). It one of the lowest grade PPO's. In the 91350 Zip Code, at 56, my premium is $670.00 a month, just for me.

Run a search for "short term health insurance" it is the biggest secret in the industry. I pay about 100 bucks a month with a 2500 deductible. Broke my hip a couple of years ago on a mtb w a total bill of about 150k and I only paid around 2k out of pocket.

Keep in mind that pretty much any health insurance won't cover you if you are racing and get hurt. You will need supplemental insurance for that.

On the subject, I was talking to a guy that insure recreational focused businesses and floated the idea of creating a group policy for people who participate in high risk sports. If a couple hundred thousand, or a million plus, adrenaline junkies got together we could likely get insurance at better rates that would cover the important aspects of our health and keep us from subsidizing old folks and pregnant women.

Lots of people do, that is why you always see people putting up a "Go Fund Me" account to pay for their crash when they didn't have adequate health insurance. Blush

I doubt that Americans can appreciate how odd this conversation sounds to anyone from pretty much any other country.

Maybe, but we still are the envy of health care in the world. My Canadian friend was going to have to wait months for an MRI, and had it done same day here in the US. I have lived and paid for insurance in other countries. You don't want to be that the mercy of a public health system. Not that the care is necessarily bad, but you don't have options and expediency like you do here.

I don't disagree- in Canada, more money means more options. But nobody who gets busted up here - no matter how or why - has to worry about a financial catastrophe (things like not being able to work due to injury notwithstanding - I'm just talking about basic medical care).

Cripes - I can go to my local Doctor, get a referral for an MRI or CT scan, and have it done that day ( My local area is Very well served with such facilities). Without paying a cent.

I've had 6 operations in the last year and a half, once again, without paying a cent.

Though, I certainly have paid my Taxes throughout my working life........... But I've never found them odious.

There are waiting lists for elective / non urgent surgery, and the strain that C9 has put on the system has certainly effected the public system waiting lists. You can also pay for private insurance, to have elective surgery done when you want. That's how I did things, for many years, being a Sportsman, who often axed himself . Now, in my dotage, I don't bother. If I axe myself, well, they'll 'fix' me. In my area / City, there are many, many, World Class / Leading Medical Facilities and Hospitals, that are all part of our health system.

But, on the 'Insurance' side, I've just had to face up to Not going to the MXdN this year, as, with the health issues I've been going through this year, getting Travel Insurance to cover the USA, is pretty much impossible. As I was going to 'treat' my 84 year old Mad Mum, and 80 year old 'Space Cadet' Auntie to an RV trip through the USA, driving over to NYC, that presented problems as well, as they have great difficulty getting travel insurance for the USA, too. No effing way am I going to expose myself ( and my relos, that I'd be paying for) to bills from the USA. I've known people that have ended up with life changing debts, from injuries that are not unusual, that they've had in the USA.

Of course, the same thing can happen with getting hurt / ill in many countries - so don't take this as me slamming the USA, please. Reading Toby Prices book, "Endurance" ( it's a Great read, with a Lot of surprises) , with what he faced after breaking his neck in Baja, and being taken to a US Hospital, was an eye opener, that's for sure.........

Oh well, I'll be better for next year, or 6 feet under, so, it's but a 'blip' in my travels.

Almost as important is having supplemental disability insurance. Work with a broker who can tailor it to not have bike exclusions.

Except you die in the energy hallway waiting for a doctor…. Canadian health is sub par. I pay thousands per year via taxation for my health. Always waiting. The system is broken. Too many claims for minor sickness. Go to emergency ward now. Likely a few police escorting some victim with handcuffs tied to a bedpost. 20+ something men walking around half naked in the hospitals. People coming in your room, stealing your food, while you are sleeping. Craziness. Look below this is happening all across the country. Month by month. People die waiting to visit a doctor. Privatization needs to happen in Canada. Revamp the current health system. Fact is 50% of Canada taxation goes to Health. Most Canadians in workforce pay 40-53% tax rate. Need to work six months in Canada, before you can save anything. No wonder kids living with parents, until mid thirty’s.

I live in Saskatoon and it's not pretty here. You don"t feel safe in an ER. I guess you could keep undesirables out of the hospitals by making it financially prohibitive for them to be there. That would go a long ways towards reducing wait times as well. A big win for everyone - or at least everyone who matters, right?

There are huge disparities of care available here in America depending on whether you are metro or rural, putting aside ability to pay. It is an effective rationing tied to supply and demand in the context of the high cost of healthcare infrastructure and that most doctors gravitate to the prestige metro areas, and many to prestige practices rather than general family practice.

I worked at a 50-100 employee manufacturer for last 5 years. I was able to maintain coverage through a govt program called cobra. Guaranteed same cadillac healthcare plan for 18 months for under 700$ a month. Foolishly considered not opting for it but was somewhat lucky to sustain an injury right before my coverage ran out lol.

Screw that,. No insurance. Dont ride,. Or pay the bills when they come. Get a payment plan set up dont rely on people to pay for the hobby you chose. Gotta love the entitled mindset.

SPOT injury insurance is awesome and puts Aflac to shame. 25K per incident and simple to use. It should be noted it does not cover motorized RACING, but does cover riding in general etc. Runs about $30 per month. I have that in addition to my normal health insurance and it paid for itself for the whole year with a relatively minor injury earlier this year.

If you do not have persistent medical issues and ride a lot, the likelihood of needing health insurance for anything significant will be regarding an injury. For around $360 annually, SPOT is there and will cover what your insurance does not up to 25K. Most insurance have a max out of pocket of around 6-12K, so there you go,

I'm out 6-8k before insurance pays for anything, and I still can't get decent pain meds. Got a fractured ankle in Feb doc gave me 7 codeines. Lasted 1 day. He smirked and it appeared that because I broke it on a bike then maybe I deserve pain or something. I asked for another scrip later that week and he said noooo no no no...like the asshat dont know I can go buy and consume a gallon of Vodka and he can't stop me, but he's gonna stop me from being a pill addict. I take enough pain gimmie my drugs
