Very cool that in this year 1990 they were able to attach a camera to a bike!
Here's the one they used incase you want to hit up the Sears catalog and get one yourself

Showing the start replay 40 seconds into the race was not a good idea.

I'm sorry but what other motorsport is using helmet cameras for a live feed other than f1? You can't expect them to perfect it on their 1st try. A live feed of the start shown with helmet cam, I've never seen that in any motorsport. That was innovation right there

I only watched the 450 races after the fact on YouTube. The idea is great, but poorly executed. If they can get a better angle at least, it's a good addition. Bonus points for better quality.

What do you mean with better angle?

Just because it is new or innovative, does not make it great.

Throw that whole idea in the trashcan, together with the split screen.

No way I'm paying to watch this B-series again. Metal ramp, boring track, "live cams", replays that takes away 50% of the actual race and a crowd that was not there.

Add to that a replay stream with video and audio like 60 sec out of sync.

One word: shitshow.

I love the idea of onboard cameras they were just poor quality. I don’t think they considered the stadium lights shining down or stabilization. I work in film and television there are better options available in that form factor with live broadcast capabilities.

I know a great video consultant who told me he would be more than happy to assist the broadcast team in getting their onboard footage squared away. As a matter of fact, he said all he needs is a couple of business class or above airline tickets for him and his wife and similar accommodations and he'd be willing to help them out for free for the next round.

He showed me this footage using 2015 era go-pro Hero Session 4 and Fly360 cameras shot at 1080P60fps and 720P60fps resolutions mounted in completely safe locations that I had to agree was much better than the WSX footage. The Fly360 cam is capable of shooting back towards the rider to get shots like the one of him getting roosted as well as shooting forward or a combination of both as shown.

He said if he was using today's technology with 5K resolutions and image stabilization he's confident it would be much better than what is shown here.

Interesting.
Powers that be probably saw sample footage from bright day exterior, that alway looks way better than a low light stadium.

To be fair, it's a low light stadium vs bright sunny day as mentioned above, and live streamed vs pre recorded. But his camera placement is much better IMO.

What are they claiming tickets sold? Principality Stadium can seat 70k+ So hopefully they had 40k people there.

With The whole lower bowl bannered off, it didn’t look good on TV. Made the crowd seem underwhelming. The middle section looked full, upper level looked dark and hard to tell.

MotoGP has live on board cameras, front and rear on every bike. And the view is amazing. Each bike has a fixed camera on the front fairing and the rear fender.

The front fender/number plate camera is horrible. The bars move too much and unwatchable even if it’s clear, which it was not. Motocross bikes move to much for a stable on board shot that is not on the actual helmet.

WSX had the big balls to try it and will rapidly sort out the tech issues. Some of the views were very good.

The only way to test it is live to air from the actual venue under race conditions.

I've been waiting a while, actually over 50 years, for live footage from SX.

Feld will have onboard by A1 me thinks.

I heard anywhere from 35k to 45k... Which from my seat looked about right, given the closed off sections. Still one of the biggest SX races ever held in Europe

Not a helmet cam tho. They use cameras that were developed boat racing

I've seen better footage attached to a dog collar.

Uhh we’ve had it over here in the US since like 2003. Pastrana ran it once and wadded up pretty good when they switched to his helmet cam on tv. The fender cam sucked.

Unreal to think it's 2022 and they ran that onboard footage. I've never seen anything so pathetic.
