For bench racing sakes, if Rv wins the gp title, would that be equal , less , or more impressive than the 24-0 seasons, rc and james had? And all 3 are great riders ,with their own resumes. Imo if he wins the gp title, he ranks #2 behind rc.

Tough call. RC's still #1 in my book, but I prefer to just group MC, RC, JS, CR, and RV under the title of "Legendary."

This isn't gonna end well...you do realize, once the JS fans come out of hiding, it's going to get as ugly as Ferguson don't you? Pinch

How did you come to the conclusion of comparing James and his Fans to Ferguson?

no disrespect to all the other greats, but rv to europe is a bold move and the selfish me wants him in the states, but him in europe is so badass.and if everts or ac rode sx they would be ranked up there also.

all 3 are legends of some sort

Rc is still #1 24-0 is not even understandable. Im a huge js7 fan, but rv ranks 2nd imo, rv is straight up "lil" ricky! James had a 24/0 also n again its mind boggling hes just exciting to watch, talent wise, he not matched. But obviously u need more than talent to be the GOAT!

Thats cool
Between those three though is hard to differentiate.
IMO;
JS had the hardest hill to climb
RV overcame injuries (Instead of becoming gun shy)
RC is....well... RC. Dude is badass fast and a beast.

RV will certainly separate himself by winning a GP Championship thats for sure.
Think that will open the doors to the way it used to be in the 70's where riders will be going abroad more.

I would say that all of them have their pluses and minus.......really hard to put one in front of the other. All excellent champions. If I had to pick.....I would have to still put RC on top....those records just stand for themselves. Pretty much leave everyone too 2nd place. Although RV's career could be in the #2 spot.

Hard to say.....and fans of different riders will have different opinions.

Imo,rc easily is the best ever, but if rv wins the gp title, i would rank him #2 and as said above all the greats have their resumes. Ac ,paulin, herlings are studs, but my poll was including sx , hard to rank the gp riders., If it was an outdoor poll only , rc still #1, with a great list below him. And i am a huge metty, tomac fan .

Records you say? Well RV doesn't own any.Shocked MC, RC, and JS hold all the records! Now, with that said, if RV has a perfect season in the GPs, yes that would equal RC and James' perfect seasons here in the states and if RV wins the GP title, It would be a toss up between MC and RV for 2nd.

I think we can all agree RC is #1, but lets take a look at career #'s of the top 4.

RC - 16 c'ships, 161 wins
MC - 10 c'ships, 102 wins
JS - 7 c'ships, 116 wins
RV - 10 c'ships, 71 wins

James and RVs #'s tell me one thing, RV knows how to manage a c'ship and James doesn't.Sad It's hard to believe that James has 45 more wins than RV, but 3 less c'ships!

Well there ya go, I'm sure this will add at least 3 more pages to this post!

It's tough for me to compare the three when RV didn't race against MC or RC, and if RC hadn't been there, JS would have at least one more championship ring on his finger. And who knows if MC would have won as much as he did if someone like RV or JS was racing against him?.

It's like comparing the 1985 Bears to the 1972 Dolphins... we'll never know who was actually better

I guess if we have to rank them and their careers, between the three mentioned, here is my list:

1. Carmichael. 12 championships, and not losing a race outdoors for over two years is incredible. 3 perfect overall seasons and 2 complete perfect seasons is video game type statistics.

2. Villopoto. 6 championships with the competition he's had is amazing. He's literally Carmichael with a few major injuries added in there. I wish we could take away his crash in St. Louis and his knee injuries to see what kind of run he could make at Carmichael's 12.

3. Stewart. It's still mind boggling to me that he only has 3 championships. Arguably the most talented we've ever seen, and when he's on, it's fun to watch. I really wish Kawasaki had their 450 completed prior to the 05 season.

I have no idea where your numbers came from. Carmichael has 10 Outdoor MX titles; not 12. If you count his SX titles, he has 15 total.

RV shares a record with MC, something that nobody else in the history of the sport has ever done.

4 SX championships in a row.

I have a hard time using wins and championships solely as criteria for judging the greatest riders of all time, simply because formats have changed so much. Roger and Heikki never make the lists because of the time period they raced.

Key word is "share"! meaning he doesn't own it outright!Dry besides, it's a moot point because MC has 3 more.Wink

if that's the case, then JS' perfect season is moot, since Ricky did it twice.

your logic is seriously flawed.

RC lined up for 17 major championships and won 15. Over his decade of racing he won 83% of all major titles available, regardless of racing status or injury.

By comparison:
JS: 5 major titles over 23 total opportunities (22%)
RV: 9 major titles over 15 total opportunities (60%)
MC: 8 major titles over ~18 total opportunities (45%, not including MX during his SX-only years)

Ryan and Jeremy's numbers are very, very impressive, and there are others who hover in the 30-40% success range. However, Ricky's results defy the odds, resulting from a lethal combination of talent, training, and tenacity.

Never said James' perfect season was a record, but he does own records for most wins in 125 MX and SX!Tongue Let me guess, your comeback will be 125s don't count? And you say my logic is flawed!Dizzy

I may be wrong, but didn't JS and RV have a couple SX-only seasons too? Not that it would sway the stats in their direction enough to make a difference... more curious than anything.

To pose another question, if you don't count MC or anyone after him (let's call it Pre-MC), what would the rankings look like? Hannah, Roger, Bradshaw, Johnson?

MC is hands down the greatest in SX. RC is the greatest in MX. RV is next in line for MX. How anyone can compare RV's and JS's careers is beyond me. RV'S career has been mainly ups, while JS'S has been mainly downs since jumping to the 450.
11/20/2014 11:51am
I have no problem counting a win in GP's as the same level as a perfect season or better, if Cairoli is there the whole time.

As always, you shouldn't just look at the digits (24-0, 3 titles, whatever it may be), but the circumstances behind them. To a guy of RC or JS's level, 24-0 should be expected against Shorts and Ferrys, and is almost more a matter of luck and mechanical stability than riding ability. Shit, Dungey only lost 5 motos his rookie 450 attempt, and we know now he's not super elite like RC.

Beating the reigning 6-time consecutive champ on his own ground, putting to rest so much talk, would be truly legendary. That, combined with the 4 sx titles, would place him in the same echelon as RC, where it would be just them. But let's revisit this in a year.
11/20/2014 12:00pm
RC will still hold the #1 spot in my opinion. If he were to go to the GP's in his prime, I have no doubt that he would win the title over there as well. Could have, should have, would have topic.
