RC lined up for 17 major championships and won 15. Over his decade of racing he won 83% of all major titles available, regardless of racing status or injury.

By comparison:
JS: 5 major titles over 23 total opportunities (22%)
RV: 9 major titles over 15 total opportunities (60%)
MC: 8 major titles over ~18 total opportunities (45%, not including MX during his SX-only years)

Ryan and Jeremy's numbers are very, very impressive, and there are others who hover in the 30-40% success range. However, Ricky's results defy the odds, resulting from a lethal combination of talent, training, and tenacity.

To pose another question, if you don't count MC or anyone after him (let's call it Pre-MC), what would the rankings look like? Hannah, Roger, Bradshaw, Johnson?
Comparing eras is difficult, especially during the time of 125, 250, 500, and SX. Some classes ran consecutively, while others concurrently. JMB capturing 3 titles in one year was unprecedented and cannot be replicated.

However...
From 1976-79 Bob Hannah secured 6 major titles, winning both 250 MX and SX in '78 & '79, making him the only rider other than RC and RV to take both championships in a single year more than once.

From 1984-88 RJ won 7 titles, including two 500cc crowns. Like Hannah, there's little doubt that Ricky would have added to those totals if not for a career-hampering injuries.

1984 also marked Jeff Ward's first major title, winning the 125 championship. The Flying Freckle would add another 4 championships to his resume on his way to becoming the first (and only) rider to win all four titles. After '84 the 125's were informally demoted in stature as sponsors and manufacturers turned their attention to the 250 class and the rising popularity of supercross.

To put anyone other than RC in front of MC is idiotic and disrespectful. Jeremy made the sport what it is, as of now, imo it's
RC
MC
JS
RV
If rv wins the gp title,
RC
MC
RV
JS

Oh yeah, I forgot JMB scored a hat trick that year, that's as impressive as going undefeated for a season, IMO

I agree, it is tough to compare all of them together... All I know is I've never been so impressed by watching someone ride as I was when I went to RedBud and watched JS and RC battle ('07 I think?). Flat-out pinned it the entire time. It blew my mind that someone could ride that friggin fast while still (appearing to be) in control.

But of course, I also watched RV battle with Townley at that same race (I think it was the same year) on the 250s and they rode the same way. They were both bouncing those bikes off the rev limiter like nobody else I've ever seen since.

James not only went 24-0, but also went 23-1 on a 125 in a field of 250f's. RV has never come close to going undefeated, the only other one I can think of is MC in SX.

RC is the GOAT, JS is the 2nd most dominant although RV has had a more impressive career.

All of the above are legends.

I guess if we have to rank them and their careers, between the three mentioned, here is my list:

1. Carmichael. 12 championships, and not losing a race outdoors for over two years is incredible. 3 perfect overall seasons and 2 complete perfect seasons is video game type statistics.

2. Villopoto. 6 championships with the competition he's had is amazing. He's literally Carmichael with a few major injuries added in there. I wish we could take away his crash in St. Louis and his knee injuries to see what kind of run he could make at Carmichael's 12.

3. Stewart. It's still mind boggling to me that he only has 3 championships. Arguably the most talented we've ever seen, and when he's on, it's fun to watch. I really wish Kawasaki had their 450 completed prior to the 05 season.

Records you say? Well RV doesn't own any.Shocked MC, RC, and JS hold all the records! Now, with that said, if RV has a perfect season in the GPs, yes that would equal RC and James' perfect seasons here in the states and if RV wins the GP title, It would be a toss up between MC and RV for 2nd.

I think we can all agree RC is #1, but lets take a look at career #'s of the top 4.

RC - 16 c'ships, 161 wins
MC - 10 c'ships, 102 wins
JS - 7 c'ships, 116 wins
RV - 10 c'ships, 71 wins

James and RVs #'s tell me one thing, RV knows how to manage a c'ship and James doesn't.Sad It's hard to believe that James has 45 more wins than RV, but 3 less c'ships!

Well there ya go, I'm sure this will add at least 3 more pages to this post!
16? 10? 7? 10?

Regional titles aren't major titles and don't count!

RC - 15
MC - 8
JS - 5
RV - 9

Records are great to look at however a lot of records set because the competition was lacking.

All are great riders.

As for peak performance I rate it like this.

JS7
RV
RC

Of course the gap's between the 3 in terms of performance are very minimal, JS7's best is the most incredible riding I have ever seen.

Oh, you're one of those people!Dizzy Why even have the races if they don't count? Try telling Pro Circuit or Geico or any of the teams that spend millions each year that they don't count! Why are they in the record books if they don't count? Geezus!!!Blush Pinch

I don't see how anyone can logically rank Stewart ahead of Villopoto in regards to the best career.

Has villopoto had a perfect season?
Has villopoto went 23-1 on a 125 against mainly 250f's
Even in amateur rankings, does poto have 11 loretta titles?
Villopoto knows how to win championships but James is a much more impressive rider and especially considering where they started from, in the ghetto with almost no money, etc. He was not accepted into the sport as a youth yet still pushed hard and earned respect from most, except you.
I mean you hate on stewart in way to many other threads so i dont think many people will take you very seriously when your talking about stew

1. No he hasn't. He's never had his main competition be Tim Ferry, Andrew Short, Cody Cooper, and Mike Alessi. Against similar competition, Dungey won 20 motos in 2010 as a rookie. Villopoto did win 18 out of 24 though against Dungey, Stewart, Barcia, and Canard.

2. No he hasn't. He never rode a 125 vs 250f's.

3. You're right. Loretta Lynn's Championships need to be considered when ranking careers. Alessi has joined the conversation of greatest ever and Cianciarulo is already there.

4. I also wasn't aware that where they started from is being taken into consideration when determining who had the best career, nor was I aware that most impressive meant better career.

5. I disrespect and hate on Stewart? Can you please show me some examples where I do that?

6. Hey look! We agree on something! Your spelling does suck, and your grammar goes right along with it.

7. Villopoto has lost one championship to Stewart in his entire career. The 2009 SX Championship. Every other championship they both lined up for, Villopoto beat Stewart.

8. Next time you come in here throwing around false accusations, be prepared to back it up.

after next year we will see who remembers who. if RV goes on to win the MXGP it will be something that James never accomplished, you can throw that into the "records that don't matter" along with RV's 4 consecutive SX championships.

it's yet to be known if James will race supercross or nationals next season. if he doesn't, i will be severely disappointed as it is a great show any time he's on the track.

trying to diminish Villopoto's career because you're a huge Stewart fan is just silly.

for Stewart fans everywhere, just stop.

Go to page 8,9,10 of your posting history, full of "james is a cheater, he MUST be suspended from racing". "Not sure HOW THEY ACCEPTED HIS TUEs he needs to be suspended" and actually just look at every post you have made on a JS7 thread and it proves my point. Let the people in charge decide what his fate is, not you.

Second, your talking shit to a 16 year old about his grammar on a motocross site and thread, get a fucking life

yes where they started from comes into consideration because of how hard it was to get where they were. Stewart has had to battle racism, unacceptance and booing at many northeast motocross round in the early 2000s, especially unadilla..

Villopoto has also had to make some wise decisions like to filter his dad out of his life for a number of years to help with his career.

My point is since you are clearly not understanding is how the fuck can you organise a top 5 in order when all the riders careers have been so drastically different and at different time periods. equiptment was different, lineups were different, TRACKS were different!!!! there is no way someone can order a top 5 list IN ORDER like you are trying to do. Every past champion is a legend and i am not a believer in whos better than who because to be honest, they all have done 1 thing and that is win championships and make history. All the guys listed have made history multiple times. Im not gonna argue any more because there is really no point. And what false accusations?

My point was villopoto has not gone 23-1 on a 250f against 250fs while stewart went 23-1 on a 125 against 250fs. And yes amateur careers do affect someones careers.. no real way of explaining it.. thats why there is so much hype around guys like cianciarulo or even when alessi first turned pro.. oh and yea, alessi i would put as one of the greatest riders of all time, hese been runner up in 2 450 motocross championships, won heat races thats something not many riders have done.

Oh and i really dont care if he won 18 out of 24 motos because thats not a perfect season nor is 20 out of 24.

My original reply to your comment should have been, "How can any logical person rank past champions in a top 5?

James grew up in bartow florida, very high crime rate and not much money in places like that. Heres a crime rate chart in bartow, you wanna look at the beginning of the chart and remember US average is 301. The crime rate has slowly gone down, in the late 80s early 90s is when stewart was there. The crime rate was much higher back then.

The OP's original question was asking for OPINIONS, there is no wrong answer.

after next year we will see who remembers who. if RV goes on to win the MXGP it will be something that James never accomplished, you can throw that into the "records that don't matter" along with RV's 4 consecutive SX championships.

it's yet to be known if James will race supercross or nationals next season. if he doesn't, i will be severely disappointed as it is a great show any time he's on the track.

trying to diminish Villopoto's career because you're a huge Stewart fan is just silly.

for Stewart fans everywhere, just stop.
I only chime in when one of the RV luvas try to deminish James' career! Oh, and to make me feel better about myself!Shocked Laughing

My original reply to your comment should have been, "How can any logical person rank past champions in a top 5?

i guess i haven't noticed anyone talking down James' career... only people saying they think Villopoto has had the stronger career. it's subjective. i think RV has had the better career in terms of championships. Stewart has had the more impressive single seasons of the two and is the head turner on the track.

He brought up How villopoto went 18 out of 24 and how dungey went 20 out of 24 when i brought up james perfect season... Those 2 have never had a perfect season so why would he even bring out those results?

And he said villopoto has never raced a 125 against 250f's when i mentioned how james went 23-1 on a 125 against mainly 250f's, and so i said villopoto did not even do that on a 250f against all 250f's..

Not sure where the umm comes in.

Ok cool chart, i thought james dad raced, anybody hurting for $$$ is not gonna spend money on dirt bikes.
He raced a dirt bike during his free time, he had to sell it to get james racing. They were poor and they have talked about it hundreds of times. the fact you are denying it makes me laugh. Im gonna guess your an RV2 fan?

Oh, you're one of those people!Dizzy Why even have the races if they don't count? Try telling Pro Circuit or Geico or any of the teams that spend millions each year that they don't count! Why are they in the record books if they don't count? Geezus!!!Blush Pinch
One of those people? Yes I'm one of those people who knows what the fuck they're talking about....

They don't count In the record books as major titles... Because they're regional, not national!

Are you twelve? You'd have to be to not know that!

Hence RC is touted as a 15 time champ, or MC 8 etc... The only place I've ever seen this shit is when it's been spouted by dumbasses here, which as usual is more likely an indicator it's wrong...
