What was the actual idea behind the process? Was Nike actually thinking of making MX boots for the consumer? One would think with the test product and the 2 riders they had wearing the boots. I'm sure neither was very cheap. The entire process was extremely quite when it out on the track and then gone.

I don't think Nike ever meant for them to go public. I think they were made for Dungey & Stewart by Nike just to create a buzz. They succeded...but they WERE fugly.

One big advertisement. Having two of the sports top athletes wearing your boots (not to mention ones that the consumer cant get) is a way to get more peoples eyes on the brand and have people talking about it. Also probably had something to do with people being more likely to support companies that support moto.

Not an expert, just my guess.

So are Lebron James Nike’s. But they seem to be flying off the shelf for a premium. It’s amazing what the logo will do. The boots were painful on be eyes, I’m sure if they were fully committed they would make the changes very quickly to please the masses. They seem to be ok in that business.

The bigger picture that I was asking, it could bring in another 800lb gorilla for sponsorship.

At the time and still today I feel that they are incredibly good looking. I really like the simplistic look. Just my opinion though.

Branding no different than Alpinestars with their gear they used to not sell in N.Am but do now I think.

I'm on board with the fugly boot guys opinion.

I am sure they were testing the waters to see if the market was big enough.

they did it to help the growth of their action sport program nike 6.0.
this was supposed to be the brand for all action sports, surf, skate, bmx, moto.
since this never was successful the stoped the whole 6.0 thing and started nike sb and nike snowboarding ( which is also gone by now)

I live down the street from the Nike headquarters and because of this grew up with some of the Nike "big wigs" kids. I remember trying to get my friends parents to sneak me out a pair, like they had done with other never released shoes for their kids. I had no luck, obviously. I was told, by these same people, part of the reason they shut the idea down was due to financial concerns across the company. They canned the boots, and other sections of Nike (including 6.0) due to this and were apparently hurting pretty bad, for them. Or at least that's what I was told.

The bright red toe is a bit “clownish” but other than that they’re not hideous. The bottom half basically looks like a standard Nike sneaker with 1/2 top typical MX boot.

Just my 2 cents.

It seems like I read they were not durable at all and they only had a few pair each so they had to be really careful with them. I’d bet when they were burning motos away from the public they would run standard boots to save these for the weekend. Wasn’t it TCX that built them?

Wrong. Gaerne has their own factory and have for maybe 50 years. Nike’s were built by oxstar/txc I believe

That was the whole point of the boot, to look like a nike shoe. I liked them personally.

And it was TCX who built them for Nike.

Didn’t someone steal a pair of Nike boots from Dungeys pit?
From JS7 at a one of the SoCal tracks. If I remember correctly he went on social media saying he only has 2 pairs and I think he got them back shortly after.

The long term goal was to make them available to the public. They were also prototyping surf booties that the surf team was wearing. Both died then Nike decided to can the whole 6.0 line thanks to the economy and long term strategy. They had some really cool technology that they were introducing into action sports side of things. A lot of it just got switched over to the Hurley brand. In the long run it made no sense to have two divisions effectively competing against each other for retail space.

I'm not sure KTM would agree.

In other news, you old codgers remember that Airwalk also tried to make a foray into the MX boot scene back in the early 90's? I got my eyes on some prototypes in a secret R&D space by accident. They never got very far.

Love them or hate them they would have flown off the shelves because they were a nike product.

I agree, a colleague of mine got laid off from Nike, then rehired at Hurley a week later doing the same thing. That made even less sense.
