Why didn't he get the trophy in '73?

At the 1973 Spanish 250 Moto-cross GP race officials first incorrectly scored Maico’s Hans Maisch as the overall winner. By the time race officials realized their mistake the podium presentation was over and Hans Maisch was long gone with the 1st place trophy, (which he never gave back). Jim Pomeroy, the “First American” to win a World Championship Moto-cross GP, never got his 1st place trophy that day.

The first and only time I saw him in person was at a Mabton "Squisher" race in 2001 put on by Pat Jaquish, who my dad grew up with back in he day. Needless to say I've heard tons of stories about how fast the guy was and how funny he was off the track. I wish I would have shook the dudes hand or something but I was too tired to even stand up after the race if I remember correctly.

Pomeroy was out there pounding out motos at the end of the day when the track had formed into a 1.5 mile long gnarly deep sand whoop pad. He was still hauling ass on the Hodaka w/ the chrome metal tank. Grinning

RIP Jim, legends never die.

I remember reading about it on Cycle News. It was amazing at the time.

Thanks, I vaguely remember than now that you mention it. I was brand new to MX in '73 and I remember the article in MXA. It was a big deal back then.

You would have thought that with the race being in Spain and Jim being on a Bultaco, that there would have been a action in getting the trophy back. Like that they even let the German guy on the German bike would even be allowed to get out of the country with it.

Was still thrashin' a Ruttman when Mr. Pomeroy served notice that the USA was for real in MX. He was a HUGE inspiration to all of us. Much respect.

I've read Hans had quite an ego and lack of concern for fairness or anyone else. Could be wrong.

Fittingly the first painting I ever did when I launched my art career in 2006 was of Jim Pomeroy! Original was bought by Tim Sullivan in Oregon to give to Jim's first wife/girlfriend who did his accounting.

Jim was such an inspiration to a 16 year old art student. I did a pencil sketch of the b/w photo after reading of his exploits in Motorcycle News. Wish I could find it now!
Got to meet Jim a few years later at Ladies Mile 250cc British MX GP. His Bultaco had broken down but he still had time for his fans.
At Budds creek MXDN in 2007 I was introduced to his beautiful red headed daughter on our stand. Naturally I gave her a giclee printing of her daddy.

I still have a few giclee art prints from the original painting if anyone is interested?

There were obviously more of these trophies made than the one the asshole German took, why did the FIM not just send him one?
What's the story on this one, where does one buy a 30+ year old GP trophy?

They tracked down the artist who cast the original in bronze to have him make another. Come to find out he had another one, maybe a prototype of sorts that he had cast back then. At least that's what I read somewhere years ago.

Oh, and fuck Hans Maisch!

Open the video clip on YouTube and read the whole description. Click the "Show More"

"28 years later a wrong was turned right by Jim's family, friends and fans. Donations were collected and another Spanish 250 GP Trophy was obtained from the original foundry in Barcelona. The foundry still had the main component, an original trophy figure left over from 1973. From that another Spanish 250 MX GP trophy was assembled. Then 30+ years later at the 2003 Chehalis Classic AHRMA National Jim Pomeroy was presented his 1973 Spanish GP 1st place trophy in a surprise ceremony held just before Sunday’s motocross riders meeting."

Let me add this information which came from Woody Graves who headed up the effort to get Jim his trophy. It was Belgium motocrosser Raymond Boven who traveled to the foundry in Barcelona. Boven had also won a Spanish 250 MX GP. That GP for a number of years used the same bronze statue for the 1st place trophy, it was their "traditional" trophy figure. Boven took his Spanish GP trophy to the foundry for them to replicate, only to find out they still had a left over figurine from 73. And as you can see in the picture of Jim's trophy above that bronze figurine had 30 years of "patina' on it.

excellent story .. Pomeroy was one of those guys who's picture i covered my school books with back in the 70's , along with Tommy Croft and the like. So many magazines lost to that cause.

Cool, that still doesn't answer why the FIM didn't take care of it in 73.
