How many hours for piston in a 250F, NOT RACING.

Edited Date/Time 2/28/2019 4:54pm
How many hours would you put or have you put on a HONDA CRF250R or YAMAHA YZ250F before replacing the top end? I have a bike that just gets ridden on a backyard practice track and isnt ridden very hard, especially nothing like even just a practice day at a real track. What other engine maintenance are you doing and at how many hours?

I wouldn't go more than 60 on a 250f. If it's being ridden hard and revved out, probably closer to 40 max. Ticking time bombs if you let them go too far. Change your oil, oil filter and clean your air filter often and you should be good to go!

If your taking care of it and arent a revver honestly i think itll go 200hrs

I did a preventative top end on mine at 60. Looked new still. Hard telling how long one could go, but if you are wrong it's going to cost ya.

Well maintained and mellow riding - no hitting rev limiter - 200 hrs no problem. Change oil every 8-10 hrs.

My 2016 CRF has 24 hours on it, and my friend wants to buy it. I changed the oil and filter and air filter more than whats required, because I dont like motor failures. Just want to make sure Im not selling something overdue. Ive never run meters until now, and ride my 250F usually 2-3 years of recreational riding, and have never done a piston in any of them. Never had issues but probably rarely went past 60 hours.
So he should get 20-40 more hours before just replacing the piston it sounds like.

Oil changed about every 4-5 hours, Red honda bottles of oil and oem filters. I own 3 air filter so they were never run dirty. Vet rider.....

this would depend on what year the bike is. The older YZ250F were bullet proof. The newer units have a much shorter life span due to the additional revs and lighter parts in use. My YZ250F's 2003 and 2006 went for ever ( over 19 months of 3 rides per week at high revs) on top ends and valves, but the newer units have a much shorter life span. The key is to stay off the rev limiter and do regular oil changes with a clean air filter always in use.

Everything in the engine stock? Good fuel? 40 hours would be safe.

Follow the intervals in the Owner's Manual.

Tell me, are you replacing your rings ever 12 hours like the manual suggests?

I think the manual for my KX450F says to replace the piston every 15 hours or something crazy. It also says to change the oil every 15 hours.

I know a guy with an 05 YZ250F that has got to have at least 300 hours on it. That sucker just won’t quit.

Yes, I follow the intervals in the manual. The intervals in the manual aren't just wild guesses. The OEMs take the time to perform endurance and longevity testing so consumers don't have to guess or speculate.

I did top end on my 2012 CRF250R at 60 hours just to be safe. Its at 100 hours now on stock bottom end and valves, still runs like a champ. Oil changed every 5 hours, filter done every ride. I think you can get a lot more hours out of a 4 stroke than everyone thinks if they aren't ridden to shit and maintained reasonably. Problem is they go boom when shit goes wrong...….

Good thing that's not a KX250f (or 450) you're riding otherwise you'd be replacing a lot of pistons at 15hrs by following the Kawi service manual. At least you would be saving money by only changing the oil when you replace a top end.

I had a '13 yz250f that I finally sold last summer with just over 200 hrs. Replaced 1st piston just past 100 hrs. Measured piston, rings, bore and everything still in spec. Valves all in spec. It was my do all bike so lots of moto, woods and desert riding. My son at the time also had a '17 yz250f. Replaced the piston at 115 hrs. Again everything in spec and he rode the piss out of it.

We both currently have '19 yz250f's will probably sell at the 100 hr mark and get new bikes.

I recently did a top end on my buddies 16 KTM 350 with 380hrs on the meter. He was changing oil every 15hrs. Original piston came out looking brand new. They last a long time when not abused. That said, I know of local pros on 450s doing top, bottom end + valves at 15 hrs - Much more heat and high RPMs than most people put an engine through.

I went 40hrs on my ‘17 KX250F before I replaced the piston. Original piston still looked good, not much wear at all. My buddy went 140hrs on his old YZ250F, I think it was a ‘14 or ‘15, before he did any engine stuff. I’m not willing to risk it that long on any bike Blink

Just riding easy 200+. On the rev limiter all the time, who knows. The stroke in those things is like 52mm.
